Some great entries this week, afraid I just can't find the time, getting ready for our big trip, Leave on Sunday, for Spain, Egypt and Tanzania. haven't started packing yet. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

The end of the gutter press? Probably not. Busy. Busy. Busy. Quick one this week - I have given up fighting with the perspective as it is winning! ![]() _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |

Re: Challenge 359: The end of the World
Interesting and entertaining work this week - and all the entries proved much more attention-grabbing than the real cover. Typography proved to be a problem for many of you, so here's a pointer: bold sans serif for all headlines, don't use TImes Roman if you want a tabloid newspaper appearance. First off the press was Eggbox, with a sentiment that was startlingly close to the real thing - I like the final curtains. But as you so rightly point out, Rebekah and Rupert are indeed still in their jobs... Very entertained by GKB's entry, and not just for the sentiment expressed. Look at the glorious detail - the texture showing through the paper, the immaculate wrapping around the top, the sheet beneath, and above all the reflections in the chrome holder. Nice work, Gordon! A host of improbable stories from tooquilos, and for those who don't recognise her that's Julia Gillard, prime minister of Australia, cosying up to Murdoch, along with Lady Gaga. A good DSK reference, and I like the Dubya gag (although I suspect Colin Myler, NotW editor, probably won't be back). I like the end of the animated version - and a terrific choice of soundtrack! A very authentic-looking cover from Deborah Morley, with a feel and layout that suits the paper well. I like the way you've built the new masthead from letters in the original one, and that has to be the best NotW headline I've seen all week! And great attention to detail - I enjoyed the "I cannot believe I am still typing this out" line at the end of the main story (but justified text required here, please). Nice one. A nicely awkward front page from brewell, in which all the elements have clearly been put together by amateurs after the printers walked out. "How hard can it be?" asks a senior vice-president. Clever work, Bruce. A detailed cover from LagoDiLecco, full of clever gags and headlines - "Ring wrong the snitch is dead" must have taken some working out! I like the stool pigeon story, Rebekah's text from Cameron, and the reader offer... nicely put together, full of very good ideas. Clearly the Australians among us understand Murdoch all too well! Plenty of outlandish celebrity gossip from bjansen, with some great stories - and I like Kim Jong Il in his Stars & Stripes shirt. The only thing I'd like to see is more of a newspaper-like front page, rather than a magazine cover - but hey, it's the final edition, they can do what they like. "I never saw that one coming", says Mystic Meg in Josephine Harvatt's gutter press entry - and a great choice of front page photograph! Perhaps a touch of wrinkling and shading needed to accompany the distortion? Otherwise excellent. Plenty of good ideas from PDelavigne, with a nicely chosen convict image and a remarkably youthful Dominique Strauss-Kahn. The only things that bother me here are the colours (far too bright for a printed publication) and the typography - sans serif for those bold headlines, please! Really funny work from James, with a perfectly edited photo of Pippa Middleton - love the wink at the end! But I hate to think how many separate layers you must have created to build the shrinking balloon. I like the edited version, with the balloon reinflating - still soaring, eh? How true. Good work, James. Very nice work from puffin31939, with the NotW trampled underfoot as the world prepares for the new Sun on Sunday. But you really are having trouble with perspective! Here's a hint: the horizon is way off the top of the image. So we should be looking down on the top of the signboard, not up at it! The easiest solution would be to use a different background street - I think that one is only going to make it hard for you. "I believe I can sky", says Murdoch in sutex's entry. A very convincing cover - and I especially like the way the House of Commons logo has been turned into prison bars. A very fine folding of the paper into a dart, too, and appropriate typography. Excellent! Plenty of ideas from Garfield72, and some good-looking photographs. But be careful of your choice of typeface! Comic Sans? Really? I think not! Good fun this week. |

Re: Challenge 359: The end of the World
Thanks, Steve. I didn't think I would have time to do one this week. Then I had an idea that I wanted to try. I struggled for a suitable background and once I introduced the sign I knew I was in trouble! However I will persevere with perspective. I have your video but as yet haven't found time to work through it. Perhaps I should prioritise it... _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |
