Re: Challenge 371: Get sculpting
Some very interesting approaches this week. It started with a painstaking obliteration of all the sculptures by michael sinclair, before adding a rather nicely integrated work of art. Very fine blending here, and you've avoided the problem of repetitive patterns in that background - nicely achieved. And a rather glorious second entry - great texture!

I liked Kathryn's rock climber, although it's hard to see what he's holding onto at the top - is there a crampon in there? Again, all the artwork has been painstakingly removed. I like the new head here, but shouldn't the features be white where the outer stone has been carved away?

A new member this week - and it's the first time a whole website has registered and joined. An impressive poster from wekraumtheater, with plenty going on here - perhaps a little too much action? I do like the treatment of the lettering, though, although I'd have chosen a less rounded font. Welcome to the forum, whoever you are.

Highly amused by Josephine Harvatt's entry - not only a great gag, but a beautifully integrated sculpture. And where did you find such a perfect matching arm?

A touch of eastern magic from Jota120, very nicely blended. But given the way the wall is facing, I'd have flipped this one to face the other way. A most convincing second entry, with perfectly positioned feet and extra rocky outcrops - beautiful. But there you go, you see - just when you're sticking so closely to the topic, you come up with a third entry and go all mystical on us.

A nicely integrated work from Nick Curtain, which seems to blend in perfectly with the surroundings. I wonder if that outer cutout shape follows the cherub a little too closely, though: perhaps more of a cloud shape would have been good?

The temple that tooquilos has integrated is a great piece of work, adding a tremendous amount of depth and interest - and the figure of David does stand very neatly in the scene. But is he leaning forwards too much? A very entertaining animated version - I love the close-up at the end!

A touch of masonic parody from Ben Mills - with a clever treatment of the square and compasses that makes it look like it's been there for years. And what a neatly rolled-up trouser leg! A great boozy face, as well - just the right sort of chap.

Vibeke's sculpture fits rather well with the cherub at its feet, and the different approach makes it stand out from the rest. My only real problem here is with the lighting: did you try inverting the original? That might just move the shadow to the other side.

Clever work from brewell, who has echoed the male sculpture with a female one on the other side. I'm very interested in the process here: how much of that is hand drawn? It looks like a lot of work!

Very funny work from Jimbean, whose Dalek has exterminated all the other sculptures... clever stuff! And very neatly, er, executed.

I like GKB's idea of David carving a bust of Leonardo into the rock face - and some great extra touches: his hands hold the mallet and chisel very neatly, and those safety goggles are a terrific addition. A good perspective on the step ladder, but we should be able to see the top of the can. Does it contain his lunch, in the form of HotChiPs?

Clever work from puffin31939, who has carved a rather fine frame into the rock and then sprayed graffiti on it... and that's a great figure washing it off. But I disagree about the positioning of the wooden board: I think it's lying flat on the ground, not raised and in the foreground as you have it.

A timely Apple icon from marlcliff, although perhaps the iPod should have taken on the texture of the stone? You could try a Pillow Emboss here, rather than a drop shadow, which would give more of a sense of it being carved into the stone. I like the fact that the figure at the bottom appears to be reading an early edition of the book - clever idea!

Remarkable work from Garfield72 - now where do you find an all-white Darth Vader when you need one? I can't quite work out what's at his feet - is he slicing three salamis at once?

I suppose it had to happen - BigVern's addition of Mount Rushmore is obvious, once you see it. But given the deep shadow in the rock in the corner, I'd add a lot more shadow - especially since the carving does bend around that corner so perfectly.

The final entry of the week is a beautiful composition from Artwel, with elements of the original moved to a stunning location, an an extra sculpture added. All the additional material - the girl fishing, the birds, the waterfall, the way the sun glints through the gap in the rocks, the reflections - add tremendously to the impact of the scene. Glorious!

Glad it made you smile - as to the arm, Google was my friend on that one

Re: Challenge 371: Get sculpting
Thanks Steve,
It took me a little while to come up with an idea for this week's Challenge. You're quite right about the 'can'. It's actually his mug of hot steaming HTCIPS tea.

Here's the image I found. With those long arms, she was probably an albatross in another life.

Thanks again Steve. I am quite ashamed of my rushed attempt at a Steve Jobs Bust, it seems to resemble that other big tech icon, Clive Sinclair!.

Very nice work by all!

Thanks, Steve. I can't make up my mind whether the board is flat on the ground at that point or not. I thought it would blend the girl into the scene if I tucked her behind what I believed to be a raised board.

Re: Challenge 371: Get sculpting
Thanks Steve. I wasn't sure what was missing from my image and then you point out what now seems glaringly obvious ... I have now added some corner shadow to my image and it looks more convincing.
Cheers
