Ran outta time. Have started a few whacky approaches which have come to nothing. Will give this one a pass I think. |

Re: Challenge 380: A la recherche de Proust perdu
This week has seen tremendous invention, and a great deal of skill: it's been one of the most dramatic Friday Challenges for a long time. For those of you wondering why a plate of biscuits/cookies features so prominently in some of the entries, these are madeleines - a neat literary reference, as they were talked about by Proust as a symbol of involuntary memory in the books. First to fill the room was Garfield72, with a somewhat lecherous-looking Marcel sitting up in bed looking at his muse (who, frankly, doesn't seem that interested in him). I like the books on the table, but their perspective is too strong for the angle of view: the sides of the table give an indication of the distance to the vanishing point, which is very much further away than these books would indicate. A good bulge in the bedclothes, but is it possible for legs to bend at that angle? A complex pun from Ben Mills, whose Proust is in search of lost Temps - although these girls seem more keen on posing than typing. I like the idea, but if you're going to put them right in the foreground you really need to get rid of that table first! I like the pictures on the wall, though. Many memories from brewell, floating about the sleeping Proust like so many dreams. The figure in the chair is nicely ethereal - and good to see the week's first appearance of the madeleines. A nicely made pillow, too. With a naked girl waiting in his bed, it's perhaps surprising that Jimbean's Proust seems to be so unaware of her - he's more interested in the wall on the other side of the room. I particularly like the way the top sheet has been made here, although when it's pulled down like this we should really be able to see the pillows on top of the lower sheet, rather than beneath it. And is it anatomically possible for someone to lie on her side with her arm over the back of the bed? A fantastic scene of devastation and grunge from tooquilos, and one that any parent of teenagers will recognise. I particularly like the new wallpaper. Just one observation: your bottle is exactly vertical, but it should follow the angle of the table leg beneath it to look truly part of the scene. Great cockroaches in the animated version! A cosy image from Josephine Harvatt, as Proust tucks up in bed with his teddy bear, having left a stocking on the end of the bed and a plate of madeleines on the table. The note to Père Noel could do with a reflection in the table, perhaps. I like the way the bulge in the bedclothes has been made, but it does make Proust look like he has an enormous bottom and no feet! And maybe the lighting could be turned down to allow him to doze off? A nicely disordered room from Eva Roth, with a plate of madeleines among the papers and books. Is he dreaming of his own younger self? I think his head may be a little too big: there's room in the bedclothes for a torso, but no arms or legs! A touching domestic scene from ahmedalij, with an extended room: the bed has become a double, there's a new window, an extra bedside lamp, and a couple who match the room perfectly. Is the lighting just a little too hazy, though? There seems to be a dense fog in the room... overall, though, a very carefully constructed scene. Good work, Ahmed! A thoughtful Proust in bed, from PDelavigne - and a nicely made book lying on the table. I don't see the connection between Proust and Brokeback Mountain, though! Well-made bulge in the bedclothes, and I like the way the pillow has been slotted in there. Good to see you back, Paulo. A rather cosy scene from Vibeke, although I'm concerned that teddy bear is going to topple and suffocate the sleeping figure... the woman in the chair fits very nicely, and I like the teacup (although it could do with a reflection in that shiny table). With that choice of bedtime reading material, no wonder she's dozed off! A nicely rendered drawing from puffin31939, turning the scene into a very effective postcard - good choice of stamp behind! I like the books on the table, although the one on the top of the pile seems a little precarious. But the perspective on the books on the bed is far too strong for the scene! We're looking up at the top book on that pile - but the horizon in the room is much higher than that. A great scene from munchonu, with some clever additions: the books on the bedside table, the excellent shadow of the glasses on the table, the neat shadow behind the picture on the wall, the way the sheet has been pulled back to reveal the pillow and bottom sheet... very convincing. THe shadow on the side of Proust's face is too strong, though, and maybe a little too grey. A clever idea from GKB, taking the title literally as Proust's room fills up with clocks. Some great angles - I like the reflections of the clock, magazine and watch on the table - and nice extra touches, like the egg-timer on the bedside table. WHen you're placing elements such as the grandfather clock, you need to split the front and side into different layers so you can distort each one independently, to make them follow the angle of the brickwork in the wall behind (and don't forget to add a shadow): ![]() I like the embroidered counterpane! Proust meets Dali meets, er, Wilfred Owen? In Artwel's complex and surreal entry. Great neon, but I think the bed may be a little damp. And the figure in the gas mask holding a light bulb? |

Thanks Steve, You're quite right about the distortion of the side of the clock. ![]() ![]() I think Paulo's reference to 'Brokeback Mountain' refers to Proust's 'lifestyle preferences' ![]() See you this evening. Gordon _________________ You're never too old to learn something stupid. |

Great imaginative entries all, including Joey's later one. I'm really disappointed I did not have time to make this enjoyable challenge. ![]() Maybe I try an off topic post and then don't need to worry too much about off the brief ![]() Better luck next week ..... |

Thanks Steve - yes Marcel does appear rather slug like doesn't he? (Shades of Metamorphosis!) - I wondered about a reflection for the note but for some reason decided not to do it - ran out of time I expect. _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Thank you Mr. Caplin for your review , It was a nice challenge. ![]() ![]() although I think old places have an atmosphere of fog , smoke and I reduced the illumination to make the room slightly wider . |

Thanks, Steve. I knew perspective would come and get me somewhere on this one. Sadly even though you have pointed out the problem it still looks reasonably OK to me! Oh for that seeing eye! _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |

Re: Challenge 380: A la recherche de Proust perdu
Thanks for this challenge. I've learnt in two ways: by your entries, and by the explanation of the madeleins. The link to the wikipedia has put me in the trial of a deeper search for Proust's texts and thoughts about involuntary memory and has discovered to me some facts and solved some questions I always had about my storm of feelings when I smell some cookings (specially those cooked with corn flavour) like cakes, or bread, and some more. Always a fountain of knowledge this place, some way or another. ![]() Thanks a lot everybody! _________________ Thank god for the google translator to help me not to make too many mistakes |
