I meant to decorate the fire place with a selection of cat themed Christmas cards, but I'm snowed under in freelance (photoshop) work for the time being - have a very merry Christmas everyone! |

Re: Challenge 382: Time to get festive
First to decorate the scene this week was brewell, with Santa stuck halfway up the chimney. Great tinsel - I really like the way it curls around, and the reflection is a good touch. Are the people much too small for the room, though? Or are you assuming it's an enormous fireplace? New panelling, and indeed a whole new room from GKB, again with Santa in an unfortunate position. I like the warmth here, but have to point out a couple of errors: there's a shadow on the wall behind the fireplace, but you'd only see this if the two weren't attached; the table top is off-centre, and at the wrong angle; the place is very small compared to the glass; and why is the reflection of the glass at such an odd angle? On the plus side, I do like the Christmas cards! An entertaining animation from Artwel - placing all those mouth shapes one by one must have taken some time! The real entry is a terrific piece of work, a gloriously seedy Santa in a nicely bare room. I like the extra touches, such as the boots in front of the fireplace and the snowman picture, and the out of focus tree in the foreground... but that blazing fire seems a little too exuberant to be truly realistic! A good candlelit scene from tooquilos, with the fire safely tucked away behind a sturdy metal grille. A great story in the animated version, starting with Santa getting stuck in the chimney - you must have an endless supply of Santa images with different poses and expressions! And I like the fitting of the fireplace around the air conditioning unit. Small point: when the present is placed on the hearth, you shouldn't be able to see the reflection of the air con grille through the reflection of the present. That's why reflections should always be placed within a Layer Group, and the opacity lowered on the group as a whole! A nicely warmed scene from Josephine Harvatt, with a tree, cards and a new armchair. The chair's perhaps a little small for the room, but I like the added flames o the fire - and a fine array of cards on the mantelpiece. The room does look better in red, doesn't it. A subtle and beautiful scene from Ben Mills, which has really been made by the lighting on the woman and the tree matching the fire direction. Just a couple of points: a couple of the lights have centres that are darker than the glow, which isn't possible; and there's a reflection of the fire in the marble hearth stone, but in this position it should be reflecting only the legs. Oh - and if you're going to light a fire in there, perhaps turn off the electric bar first! Another stuck Santa over a roaring fire, from puffin31939 - it does seem to be a theme this week! Good decorations: perhaps darken the room a little so the fire shines out more? I like the dog, but it does seem a little small for the room. A serious blaze from michael sinclair, with a two-frame animation that livens up the whole scene. I'm not sure about those pulsating shadows, though: the one below the wrapped present couldn't be jumping up and down like that, could it? And should the Christmas tree really have a shadow behind it, towards the fire, when it's the fire that's casting the shadow? A glorious scene from BigVern, reflected inside a Christmas bauble. There's a huge amount of detail in here, and the spherical reflection has been perfectly executed - right down to the tricky distortion on the reflected HotChiPs cap. Excellent work, Vern, a really beautiful piece of work. LagoDiLecco is the only one this week to turn on the electric fire, rather than adding flames to it - and it's very nicely illuminated, with the suggestion of a warm glow lighting the surrounding area. Is Santa moving very fast, though, or is he just blurry? And that seems like a slightly mean tree for such a big fireplace - I'm sure it could go a lot bigger than that! Good to see that old photo of Ted Eggs cropping up in Deborah Morley's entry - he does make a rather fine Santa, doesn't he. The lit fire seems a little dim there: shouldn't it be brightening the surrounding area rather more than that? I like the interaction between Garfield72's Santa and the little girl just visible in the corner of the frame - perhaps she should be a little further in? A good tree, too, but I'd be wary of placing it so close to a roaring fire. And that cat's going to fall off the table! A peaceful scene from joeysala, with decorations arranged on the tables and a crib on the mantelpiece. I like the glass of milk and tin, complete with their reflections: but is the boy (a) a little too small, and (b) too close to the fire for comfort? A blazing fire from ahmedalij, with a Victorian family crowded around the tree. I like the flames, and thay's a good try at drawing a fire screen - although I don't think I've ever seen one to quite that design. One point about the lighting: if the light is all coming from the fire, as seems to be the case, then none of it would reach the sides of the fireplace. A highly decorated room from Jimbean, with Santa's little helper taking on a more raunchy appearance than we're used to. She does seem rather small, though - keep her eye line near that of Santa's for a better sense of realism. That's a lot of booze you've laid in, Jim! A couple of sexy Santas from maricliff: but if you're going to include two people, you do need to ensure they're lit in a similar way! The white fringe on the both Christmas trees would be easily removed with the Background Eraser tool, or even using Layer Blending; the Magic Wand isn't enough by itself. And I'm not sure you can include a drawn wrapped gift in a photographed scene - there is something a little odd about that. Thanks for the message, though! A splendidly lit fire from Sophie - good tinsel, and a very sparkly tree. I'd tone down the saturation on the presents, though, which seem just a little garish for the scene. ____________________________ Good work, everyone. I wish you all a very happy Christmas, and look forward to seeing you again in the New Year. Steve |

Re: Challenge 382: Time to get festive
Thanks Steve, Again I had very little time this week but do I feel quite embarrassed about that fireplace shadow! Oops! I'm in sunny California for Christmas so I may not get to have a bash at Piccadilly Circus. I would also like to wish all the forum members a Merry Christmas, a happy New Year and thanks for making this forum such fun. Thanks, Steve. I just couldn't decide what size to make the dog, not sure how you judge it. I have asked Santa for an insight into perspective! Thanks for the help throughout the year.
