Nice entries.
Thanks Josephine. She dislocated her shoulder, now just one armed, i.e. in sling for several weeks.
Well; squeeze my quick attempt in at last minute! Would like to have done some more, but maybe I'd go off brief

Some people will do anything for a bargain, including queuing for hours in the pouring rain!
I would have liked to have added more animated signs but ran out of time!

Here is the animated version http://vimeo.com/artwel/piccadillysales

Re: Challenge 383: Light up the town
Happy New Year, everyone - hope you all had a good time over the holidays.

First to light up Piccadilly was Nick Curtain, with a thoughtfully-approached scene: there's a great glow on the road, and elements such as the bollard and the traffic lights have been well picked out. I like the lit windows especially, but feel perhaps Boots could do with an illuminated sign. And could the Samsung sign do with a little more sparkle?

Good work from vibeke, with a neatly darkened scene - that sky has a good feel to it. I like the Santa flying off in the distance! Are those lit windows just a little too yellow, do you think?

Good lighting from puffin31939, with those illuminated signs really ringing out. I like the lit top floor of Burger King, but it does look rather closed downstairs... and have you assumed Boots closes early? Good lighting in the street round the corner!

An exuberant scene from joeysala, with new illuminations replacing the existing signs. Good sentiments, Joey, but you can't bend the 2012 banner by stepping the text down like that! You need to use Image Warp to make it truly curve around that bend, or it won't look like a real curve.

A new member this week: bayer2012 joins us from China, with an entry in which all the upper signs now screen a firework display. It's a very good piece of work, with illuminated windows beneath and very subtle lighting around the corner. Just one thing: with a moon that bright, there would be a lot more light on the buildings and the road. Welcome to the forum, Laotang!

A satirical vision from brewell, as Big Brother urges us to consume more - which is, of course, exactly what the original signs were doing. That’s an interesting treatment on the pedestrians: it adds to the nightmare vision of the whole piece. Good work, Bruce.

A great evening scene from maiden, with a lot of street-level light - exactly as there would be, of course. I like all the illuminations, but I wonder if the lit windows are just too yellow - and too fuzzy? Do they need that feather?

A custom banner right at the top from munchonu, in a well-lit scene that's very dark at street level. Interesting that you've only lit the yellow parts of the bollard: the white areas area also made from the same translucent plastic, and so should really be brighter than the yellow areas. Good detail on the neon sign on the building round the corner!

A touch of genius from tooquilos, adding in not just some wholly new signs (the Coke sign needs to bend down a bit, though) but, best of all, some terrific streaks of light from passing cars. I like the shimmering signs in the animated version, especially the sparkle that moves over the Sanyo sign. That "Happy New Year 2012" banner should really scroll across, though! Great fireworks.

Armoured tanks roll through the streets of London in ahmedalij's entry - is that how New Year looks in Baghdad, Ahmed? It does blend in very well, though. I like the illumination, but I'm not sure the edges of the signs should be quite that fuzzy, though, but it does make for a very appealing image.

Plenty of animation on the signs in James's entry - I like the way the sports car goes behind all the pedestrians, and the moving boat and plane on the top sign (I especially like the way they curve around the corner). Very patient pedestrians you’ve found there, James! I think this is one instance where the animation should loop without a pause between the end and the beginning, as you've done in the first version.

Bright signs and shop fronts from marlcliff, but why have you desaturated the people and the buildings? OK, they might appear more monochromatic with nighttime lighting - blue, perhaps, as a traditional day for night effect, or slightly orange in street lighting - but never black and white!

A touch of politics from Jimbean, as the SNP launches a missile attach on London. A great crowd scene, and I like the way the missile has buried itself in the road surface. Not sure about the font for the scrolling sign, though - it's easy enough to find dot matrix fonts that will do the job better. And, minor point, your missile is coming from the south, rather than the north...

A satirical entry from Josephine Harvatt, as global warming kicks in. I particularly like the Tuvalu sign! (For those who don't know, the island of Tuvalu's main export is the .tv domain name, and it's sinking into the ocean.) Nice work!

A very nicely lit scene from Garfield72, with great illumination - I especially like the added taxi. But I think the windows are too yellow. Bonne année à toi aussi, François.

A cool Happy New Year sign from Deborah Morley tops off some clever lighting - I like the way only the ceiling lights are illuminated in the upstairs room of Boots. A good illuminated bollard, but should it really be casting such a well-defined glow on the road?

A remarkably on-topic entry from Jota120, with a decidedly frosty scene: there's a blue tinge to the background here that does suggest a very cold central London. Great lighting on the signs - they really do look fully illuminated.

Interesting work from michael sinclair, who has moved part of Piccadilly Circus to the South Pole. There's an issue with the perspective here, Michael: the horizon in the image is at the eye height of the foreground pedestrians, but in your background it's very much higher. And while we can see the reflection of the Burger King sign clearly, shouldn't it be at least partly obscured by the pedestrians standing in front of it?

Clever work from Artwel, who has moved the action from Piccadilly to elsewhere in London - or, perhaps, in a still from a video game? There is an unreal, slightly blocky aspect to those buildings, and the umbrella-wielding pedestrians seem to be standing on a cutout base. A very neat animated version, though - I like the splashing raindrops, and especially the rain running down the camera lens.

Good work, everyone.

I got rid of the black smear as soon as i posted. It was barely discernible in the original, but became really obvious as a jpeg. Details!

Re: Challenge 383: Light up the town
Thanks Steve! So originally those people were going to be clowns standing in the rain (picadilly 'circus') but I lost time.
I created the buildings in 3dsmax, I wanted to catch the city lights reflecting in the rain puddles!, and have the camera panning down from the sky..But I now remember why I don't use 3dsmax; the power draining rendering times!, so i had to cut out a lot of shadows and reflections to bring the render down from 8hours to 1 hour!! Today my computer and my head are having a rest!
I could probably do this with photoshop CS5's 3D function but I have yet to explore this new tool.
Anyhow I learnt a bit about rain on this one!

Yes indeed! I know the orientation of launch site and targeted observational view, and he is right for that trajectory, of course, unless they have gone off shore (no comment)!

Re: Challenge 383: Light up the town
Thanks again Steve. I wish I could have had time to go off topic .. another day ...
Very much like your interpretation, and true I hope. Err... the sky was from Blade Runner, so you might think where I was going

Just another two thoughts:
-One thing I was thinking of is in towns and city streets these days (if you are lucky) they now use high pressure sodium lights which have blue part of the spectrum (+red) from the mercury as well as yellow sodium spectra, so look quite(?) white with blue???, to our eyes.
Just my understanding.
Motorways, other areas etc can still use basic yellow low pressure sodium lights, efficient and that is all we need.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_vapor_lamp
-Second thing
-I'm not sure I should mention this only small observation, but IMHO the drop down shadows should go when the background illuminations start? I tried 75%, time was going, so left Bud' relieved, so gave some spotlights ... err real original Bud is fine from Czech, but what happened when big industry starts to manufacture ....

Thanks Steve. I agree I over did the window lights it never sat right with the composition but hey at some point you have to call an end to the tweaking. But yeah I agree I don't like the yellow feather lighting of the window. I have to leave something in for you to critique

Happy New Year Steve, and thanks for the card it really helped me through.
