Re: Challenge 402: The ghost bus
Welcome from me too Linda and I like the way your bus is getting tossed in the sea. Thanks Josephine, we are all made of star dust, I only have a bit, so cannot create this, but this area of our sky seems interesting, won't give name, because my image not so interesting then ![]() Trevor |

Re: Challenge 402: The ghost bus
The first entry this week was from Ant Snell, featuring characters from the truly ghastly 1970s television series On the Buses. The conductor, Reg Varney, was actually the driver in the series - but good to see the grouchy inspector peering out from the inside. You do need to check your spelling of "ghost" though, Ant! I like the lit signs in the second entry - is the interior just too pink, though? A very interesting technique from salfordnurse, who has applied a range of filters to the bus, giving it a truly ghostly, glowing appearance - most appealing. It does seem rather too small in the street, though: that lamp post on the left surely shouldn't be towering over it? Very clever work from Sjef, combining the bus with the London Dungeon (a popular tourist attraction) and a Buckingham Palace guard. I really like the way the bus has crashed into the building, with a splendid pile of bricks wrapping artfully around it - and the engine lying over to one side. A great idea, very well executed - and enough to earn you an early title. Has to be Flying Dutchman, I think! A dark scene from tooquilos, with a lightly lit interior and a huge moon - and a very cute ghost up in the sky, with green glowing eyes. The ghost features prominently in the animated, along with a flying witch. Just one thing: because the bus is at such a steep angle, it can't really traverse the scene by going right to left. In order to move at all in this orientation, it really needs to be travelling away from us - and so growing smaller as it recedes. A great scene from Frank, with a ghostly figure guarding the bridge - and something very weird sitting on the distant parapet. A nicely lit interior, too, and lots of extra detail such as the face appearing over the gateway. But you need to watch your perspective, Frank: the people in the distance are enormous compared to the size of the bus - as, indeed, is the figure standing next to it. And if the winged figure is standing on the parapet the other side of the moat, how can the ghost behind him be reaching over the railing that's so far in front? Tricky business, perspective. A very neatly integrated scene from Vibeke, who appears to have transposed the action from London to Vienna. I like the sense of movement in all the people walking past, and the bus fits well into the view. A couple of things: you need to distort it a little to match the angle of the kerb - that platform at the back should be exactly parallel to it. And perhaps a little more red and less green, to match the tone of the background? The bus to hell from Josephine Harvatt, almost consumed by flames. A very finely made conductor holding onto that pole at the back - and some neat Harvatt-style puns on the place names. Are the flames at the top reflections, or inside the bus? I couldn't decide. Very fine work from Ben Boardman, with a beautifully lit interior (great angle, particularly on the tricky upper deck) and a host of Disney-style ghosts adorning the outside. Tempting though it must have been to reflect the windows in the pavement, the reflection is much too close to the original... and don't ghosts cast reflections? I thought that was only vampires! Edvard Munch's The Scream hangs over the gateway in Mariner's entry, with a completely remodelled interior on the bus and a very theatrical setting. I like all the fullmontage characters looking on! But you do need to sort out your lighting. If it's so directional as to cast such strong shadows, then the people should be entirely in shadow on the side facing the bus - and the bus could really do with a shadow beneath it! A new member this week: Linda Eckhert has placed the bus in a stormy sea, headed towards a spooky skull on the horizon. I like the angle, the road signs and the direction in which the skull is looking: but why is the woman in the foreground getting undressed? The water fits well around the side of the bus, but should change angle as it goes across the back - and should maybe run inside it as well. A great first entry - welcome to the forum, Linda! Munchonu has done a good job of straightening out the perspective of the bus, which is necessary when viewing it from this distance. But the angle of the wheelbase does need to follow the angle of the road, so clearly marked by the white lines either side: easier to change the white lines, perhaps! I really like the gateway, and the railings, and all the added ghosts - but that perspective will always trip you up if you're not careful. A nicely illuminated sign on the side from Garfield72, whose bus is standing outside a haunted house. Good lighting inside the bus, and especially good rear lights. Should the woman be in front of the pole, though, rather than behind it? An intricate and detailed vortex starts to swallow Deb Raskin's bus - very nicely made! I especially like the way you've turned the bus back to traditional London red - a fantastic achievement, given the original colouring. A great view of the interior through the open platform, too - great work! Jota120's bus heads off into the cosmos, stopping on the way only to pick up a giant furry spider. Could it do with a little more light in the interior? And should the lower half be somewhat brighter? A rather startling zombie from Jimbean, as the bus heads into a night scene. I like the lower deck lighting - but your upstairs seems to have come over all Mondrian. You need to watch your perspective, though: the bus seems much too small compared with the size of the windows in the building behind it. And such a strong moon would surely light up the side of the building facing it? A host of late rockers fills Arijel's Ghosts of Rock bus - nicely worked into the interior. Not sure about the lettering spilling over the edge of the sign, though! But a good choice of font, and Janis does fit very well on the rear platform. A very dark scene from marlcliff, with a partly lit interior and something I can't quite make out going on upstairs. And there's the inspector, Blakey, from On the Buses... good grief! You don't mean to say that awful series made it to the US? Clever work from joeysala, whose bus is passing, Harry Potter style, through the wall of a train station. A great idea! The conductor on the back works well (although he's perhaps a little too big) - not sure about the greatly varying scale of all the passengers! Entertaining work this week! |

Re: Challenge 402: The ghost bus
Thanks Steve....re. the passengers - they're all spooks so don't have to conform to standardized sizes (maybe?). The conductor I tried to scale based on the steps behind him - they are huge! This was a fun one. _________________ "Art is a blade of grass ... and in a moment I will eat it." |

Cheers! The flames on the bus are supposed to be reflections really - but it works either way I suppose - did you recognise the conductor ![]() _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Really appreciate your input and the way you make us improve, at least I'm hoping we are improving. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

The spectators were caught between the moonlight and the light from the bus. I decided it was just too difficult and hoped you wouldn't notice. Re: Challenge 402: The ghost bus
Thanks again Steve! Yes, I think a bit more light in the bus would have added interest, but would mean taking down the gamma ray shields ![]() The "furry spider" is a rather large tarantula who hijacked the bus to return home to the Tarantula Nebula. As you do ![]() Trevor |

Re: Challenge 402: The ghost bus
Well done all! Some inspiring work and ideas. I'm just sorry that I didn't do my homework this week, eek. ![]() I'd thought about something like the dead rock-stars of Arijel, but with a Leveson Inquiry theme, 'The Ghost of Journalism' on an eerie Fleet Street- Murdock and Co. plus politicians on the bottom deck, those wronged on the upper. I got as far as downloading images and placing the bus in the night-street, but had no time to learn about working with glass etc. Well there is always next Friday ![]() |

Thanks Steve -- got so wrapped up in the composition some perspective escaped -- perhaps it was that last shot of Captain Morgan I swallowed while finishing it off. (or I need to clean my glasses more often) Frank |
