Re: Challenge 403: Arts et Metiers
Glad you all liked this weeks' starting image - the metro station really is rather beautiful. First in was Ant Snell, who imagines how the station would look if it were in London - covered in graffiti and trash, it seems. Great perspective on the graffiti, and many interesting techniques: I like the different paint applications, from the tagging to the sprayed Peace symbol on the porthole. And a splendid Sarkozy poster, both in terms of its bending to the scene and its mutilation. Very good work! A touch of drama from Linda Eckert, with an unusual busker - a pianist being sucked into the porthole? And I like the surrealism of the fish swimming out. I'm not sure about the audience, though: some are looking at him, but most are looking past and ignoring him. An undersea montage from tooquilos, with Captain Jack in a diver's helmet and a casket of jewels... great texture and there's a real sense of outside through the porthole. A bit of an epic story in the animated version - love the rippling movement on that octopus. Maybe a touch more limb movement in the sword fight, though - James's territory! Really splendid work from Deb Raskin, with water cascading through the join in the wall panels and rushing down the platform. A very fine octopus reading the paper! Really well achieved, Deb - the distortion of the view through the water on the wall is just right. A variety of interesting sea creatures from Jimbean, trawled from many movies, I think. Good work getting the reflection of the No Fishing chap to match the reflected bin behind him. Not sure about the water gushing from behind the porthole: should it be quite as opaque as that? And shouldn't it be coming through the porthole instead? An assembly of steampunk-clad revellers in Josephine Harvatt's entry, with a nicely renamed station. Hope the poor girl's knees heal up. A fantastic creature sitting against the wall - are you seriously trying to tell us that's a diving suit? Do you have sight of the original? A very atmospheric image from Tom, with HAL from 2001 filling the porthole. I like the idea of the window into space, but shouldn't the ribbed and studded line continue along the bottom of the opening, to frame it? A well spotted shadow error from Joey Sala led to the second entry - quick correction! But if you follow the line from the shadow through the skeleton, then surely you'd expect to see the light source about three feet in front of it, much nearer ground level. More steampunk enthusiasts from Ben Boardman, with a rather fine uniform - and is that a steampunk Donald Duck? A nice arrangement of characters, with a very neat clock hanging from the ceiling. I like the eye through the porthole. A monolithic scene of statuary from Deborah Morley, with a fine sculpted head (should I recognise him?) and a bit of a beastie leering through the porthole. Great colouring unifies the indoor scene, with a subtly altered station sign. An amusing image from Garfield72, with Captain Nemo's portrait looking anxious as water gushes in through the cracks - and a maid trying to work out how to mop it up. Good water, fitting the shape of the panel well, but you need to ripple the view of the porthole seen through it. I like the new sign lettering. A fine underwater scene from Frank, with both sharks and a huge octopus swimming through the station - and some great texture in there. A great Eiffel Tower view through the porthole, the first one of the week! Is that a diver bottom left? I can't quite interpret that portion. A tiny. reduced platform from Mariner, with a man in combat fatigues rather curiously guarding a bottle of blue Coke and a floral handbag. I like the vast metro train, and the neatly translated HotChiPs name, but why is the underneath glowing rather than in shadow? And what's casting the reflection on the wall, so far in front of the train? A typical day on the metro from James, with sharks and a rather cute animated angel fish swimming past. Splendid human movement on the woman, who walks past remarkably convincingly, swinging her arm as she does so. A slightly misshapen elbow as she waves to the fish, though: it's really hard to bend arms, they often end up looking too long. A sheet of cascading water from Arijel, with a trio of somewhat oversized ducks investigating the showering octopus. If the ducks shrank in size as they recede into the distance it would be more plausible; and are their reflections a little too far down? I like the curved view down the tunnel in the Artwel's entry - particularly the extruded porthole, which snakes towards the figure in an entertaining way. And I do like the way the octopus has grabbed the station sign! Clever work from Jota120 this week, who has turned the station around to show us a view straight down the tunnel - with a splendidly futuristic train hurtling towards us. There's a great sense of action here, in a very finely-wrought image. Just one tiny thing - those chairs need a little distortion to bring the backs upright, and perhaps the seats need to be elongated a little. Otherwise, a very fine image, Trevor! Plenty of sea creatures in joeysala's galactic entry - great rippling reflection on the diver, and I like the way some of the creates are semi-submerged.Is that a finishing-line tape? If they're swimming a race I don’t think any of them are interested enough to win! Good work, everyone. |

Thanks Steve - yes she must have tripped over that brass curtain rod she's holding ![]() and yes, it is a real diving suit - I can't find the original image of the Carmagnolle (which I got from Google) but here is a link with more info http://www.oobject.com/diving-helmets/carmagnolle-diving-suit/667/ _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Thanks, Steve. I'm not sure what you mean about the underneath glowing. Ah, the reflection, it's supposed to be of the side of the train but I couldn't get that right and ran out of time. _________________ "The problem is knowing when to stop" |
