I always like places better when the tide is in.

Thanks Tooquilos. I was happy when I got it to merge quite well with the skyline, which took a bit of thought, and a lucky discovery.

Joey I like your idea with the bottled ship. Steve did a tutorial for a ship in a bottle I think.., cant remember where I saw it though!

It gets a bit boring living in London or any other city for too long, so I just want to go away. So just thought take her for a very nice break in very tidal county of Cork -SW Ireland where the craic is good Off the coast there many ships sunk!, hope she gets back ok, she will .... .

Trevor - what exactly is "craic", and is it better than most other places? Joey

Re: Challenge 404: Bring in the tide
Plenty of interesting objects revealed by Ant Snell, with ships from around the world floating about. The one at the back, which looks like a double decker bus, has some extreme perspective on it - but you’d only see this effect if it were much closer to the camera. At that instance, the perspective effect would be almost zero. I like the beached wreck in the second entry, a junked junk, as it were - very nicely done, with a subtle reflection in the new water pools. The man with the laptop seems a little out of scale, though.

A good scene from Linda Eckert, who has built a riverside café - very nicely achieved. It looks like there are further tables and chairs on the beach, but it's hard to see at this size. I think the problem may be the you set your image resolution at much higher than 72 ppi?

A bit of emergency rescue from Jimbean, with a complex story being told: it appears they're saving a swimmer from sharks, but the inflatable shark in the background suggests they're being had. Nicely worked reflections here, Jim - very subtle! And I like the height of the river.

A serene river from Trevor Dennis, with a 404 Not Found message floating in the waves - or, rather, engraved into the waves, which is a tricky thing to get your head around. I like the way the water has been surfed up around the pillars, and that plane is dragging a neat banner. The text would be more convincing if its perspective matched the rest of the scene - the angle is clearly set by the stripes in the river and the angle of the pier. And should those children have such strong shadows, when nothing else does?

I like Garfield72's upturned wrecked car, which sits convincingly in the shallows. The reflection, though, seems too strong to be realistic; and it needs to have some horizontal distortion, so it matches the reflection on the boat behind it. A fine promenade in the second entry, the angle matching the perspective of the scene perfectly - very well achieved!

A complex scene from Frank, with a flying boat and a whale making up the flotilla. The anchors in the foreground rather confuse me - I don't see what they can be sitting on - but I like the water treatment, especially the way it laps around the base of the pier. Nice work.

A beautiful image from Mariner, who has not just brought the tide in (and added a sandy beach) but tweaked all the colours, and added a splendid blue sky. (Just one thing about that: it looks like a cloud formation from much higher up in the sky. Near the horizon, the clouds are much smaller and exhibit similar perspective to what you'd see on land. I've included a range of skies on thefullmontage that reach the horizon, for just this purpose.) That aside, it's a very strong and well-considered piece of work, and certainly good enough to earn you a title. So, let's see... with interests ranging from quantum physics to joinery, vector graphics to astronomy, I think Renaissance Mariner fits the bill. Very fine work, Michael!

I think Josephine Harvatt is getting a bit of an obsession with that chap from Lord of the Rings - he does seem to keep popping up out of holes. A good couple of characters - but aren't the edges of that hole a little sharp for sand and pebbles?

A nicely-raised water line from Deb Raskin, complete with a Loch Ness-style beastie. Is that shadow the right angle, though? It seems just a bit too well-defined for comfort. I like the colour of the water, but it should be a closer match for your appealing blue sky - after all, that's what it's reflecting.

A great view from vibeke, with a girl and dog in the foreground providing good interest, and turning a static view into something very much more personal. I don't understand why the reflection of the pier is so short, though: shouldn’t it be at least as deep as the pier itself?

Industrial treasure-burying from tooquilos, with a couple of very neatly-dug holes (and I like the pile of sand behind them). That treasure chest does look more like a piece of furniture, though! I like the Jumanji film reference in the animated version - excellent appearance of the vines on the pier, a novel way to grow a tree, and a terrific range of animals (although that must be one hell of a big monkey).

A fabulous sunset from bayer2012, making the Thames look more like Venice - beautiful colouring, and that sun right in the middle of the picture is very well achieved. Why are the boats so squashed down, though? They seem very compressed. And the sun in that position, while beautiful, would cause all sorts of issues with shadows that you haven't addressed here!

Plenty of junk washing up on the beach from Ben Boardman, all neatly half-buried in the sand (apart from the shopping trolley, which seems to be floating on top - it's all a shadow issue). A good crocodile, but I'm not sure about the car on the left, which seems to detract from the focus of the scene.

I like joeysala's idea of a ship in a bottle being washed up - and glad those fullmontage characters proved useful! The clinging barnacles are well achieved, but you really need to address the water level inside the bottle: that horizon needs to match the outside world.

A flooded scene from Arijel, with some good reflections in the water. But where is all the green coming from? That river needs to reflect your strong evening sky! Talking of which, a sky like that would mean that the buildings would me a lot darker, and would also have a brownish hue to match the tone of the sky.

I like Jota120's idea of moving the London skyline to Cork - and that pier does jut out very convincingly from the land on the right. There's something about this view that makes me think the horizon should be higher than this, but I can't put my finger on it: have you checked the height with the original photograph?

A few relocated London landmarks get the gung-ho treatment from Artwel, with an amusingly sinking ship and a somewhat startling mushroom cloud explosion. Have to say, the chap on your tank does seem a bit oversized, though. I'd be tempted to lose him altogether, as his lack of movement (and being right in the foreground) is a constant distraction in the otherwise magnificent animated version - what a great set of explosions!

A new member this week, and marki has brought the water level right up with a nicely wavy river, complete with a good reflection of the pier. The texture of the water is good, although it doesn't have quite as much perspective as we'd need in order for it to reach the distant bank - this is more of a close-up view of the surface. Is that an added sun over the boat? If so, you need to address the rest of the sky as well - and do beware of bunging on a dose of Lens Flare at the end! I like the "signature" on the pier.
