Bernard Crayola gets his big idea in a spice market.

(It was that bag of wax blocks that made it all click)

Balotelli is a man of few words, but if he did say something it would be "Tell me what you want..."

Fixed a couple of issues noticed after posted if you don't mind. My interpretation of image sort of reminds me of Scheherazade...

Re: Challenge 410: The spice market
The first entry this week was from Garfield72, with the simple solution of recolouring the cones - and it has works remarkably well, partly because the colours used are so true to life (and it's very easy to oversaturate when doing this). I like the newly tinted stuff in the bins, too, which makes them much more appetising; and the man in the background is exactly the right sort of person. Very good!

A good entry from Jimbean, with added texture on the cones - and I like the way in which it appears to wrap around them, very neatly achieved. The soap in the front bin looks a little toxic, but that's more than made up for by the man wielding the sword in the background - actually, I thought it was a fishing rod until I read the sign. Nice!

I really should count up all Josephine Harvatt's science fiction references - this one's from the first Star Wars film, with a subtly altered quote from Obi Wan himself. Great cones, but it's the rest of the scene that catches the eye: the bundles of cinnamon in the bon, the soaps and carpets and the mirror... this really is evocative of Morocco, even down to the fact that Alec Guinness is wearing a djellaba. Splendid.

A very earnest salesman from Ben Mills, selling liquorice allsorts - and I suggest you click on the link if you don't know what these are (even better, I suggest you try a packet). A perfect fit in the bin, as are the aniseed ones in the bin next door - and the dropped focus in the background works well. What's he sitting on, though? A high chair?

A packed scene from Frank, with the cones relocated to a busy souk and a salesman offering a sample to a clearly Western buyer. A seriously well-assembled scene, Frank, but the buyer is a little overdressed: in my experience, when the Moroccans find it's time for a heavy coat, the tourists are still wearing T-shirts.

A comedy salesman wearing a false moustache from tooquilos - and a great range of traditional spices on sale (although I think his gold is mislabelled). The angle of the shop in the background is rather at odds with the perspective of the cones, though! Makes me feel a little vertiginous. A decidedly Western genie in the animated version - I like the way she Disneyfies the whole scene one piece at a time! And, as ever, a wholly appropriate soundtrack.

A touching scene from Vibeke, with a kitten sitting in one of the bins - and, certainly, Morocco is full of stray cats (although few of them look as well fed as this one). Great new colours, and new contents on the bins. The man behind is somewhat oversized: in reality, each of those cones is about 18 inches high.

A fabulous scene from Linda Eckert, with the bins full of ice cream that's understandably melting in the Moroccan heat. beautifully assembled giant cones, very artfully dripping over the edge of the bins - a great idea, very neatly realised. And that's enough to earn you an early title, Linda. So... no biographical info, except that you appear to live in France... I think maîtresse marocaine is appropriate for this image. Good work!

Very amused by brewell's entry, suggesting the invention of Crayola crayons, with the bottoms of the spice cone bins featuring oversized labels from the crayons themselves. The wall behind has been decorated to match the design of the Crayola packets... clever work, Bruce! A great expression on Mr Crayola!

I like brumtaffy's idea of filling the bins not with spices, but with Spice Girls - most appropriate. When you gather their images from a variety of sources, though, you do then need to make sure the lighting matches on all of them: Baby Spice, in the middle, is far more saturated than the rest (and I don't just think it's her fake tan). Guest appearances from Simon Cowell and, er, Balotelli in a djellaba to the fun.

A finely decorated set of cones from Ben Boardman, with a great choice of background that matches the perspective perfectly - and I like the new bin contents, which are most appropriate. You lose marks for using someone else's Photoshop montage of Samuel L Jackson as a cone head, though: choose another film star, and make your own!

Enormously impressed by a rare foray into still images from James, who has combined this week's Challenge with the recent market stalls image, all set against a background that's perfectly in keeping. An awful lot of work has gone into this montage, with plenty of added detail - the passers by, the cat, lizard and pigeon, the way the spices fit inside the stalls... very fine work, James! In fact, it amazed me that you then went on to create an animated version... you really have to watch this again and again to catch all the action, from the swinging bell to the nodding salesman, the moving bicycle in the background to the swooping hawk. Amazing!

The original cones and bins disappear behind an authentic labelled market stall (in fact, I think I photographed the same one) from Mariner - all overseen by a surprisingly cheerful Obama. Given that you've used the "leader of the free world", though, might it have been idea to modify some of the text labels so they refer to his actions and policies? Otherwise, it's hard to see why he's sitting there.

Ingenious work from Ant Snell, who has moved the scene to a Tesco store in the UK - but the cones and bin contents are replaced with Tesco-branded goods. Plenty of expert detail, including the signage and the carrier bags hanging at the front; filling the cone bins with cone-shaped packs of herbs, pulses and spices was a really clever idea. An inspired entry, beautifully realised.

A touch of political comment from Deborah Morley, with disgraced Barclays boss Bob Diamond flogging off stacks of pound coins while the bins for each of the major banks lie empty in the foreground (and perfectly emptied, too). Very nice work! Even if, as you say, the coins do look a little like biscuits. Too wide, and too flat, perhaps?

It looks like Jota120's stall has opted for bulk sales, with stacks of bundled cinnamon sticks and soaps resting in the bins. I like the hanging background, but are the contents of your cone bins a little too fuzzy?

Great entries this week!

Missed out on this challenge - drats! - been overwhelmed with the three-digit weather here, and wild fires east and west of us. Care to trade weather (England) for a spell? I could do with a bit of fog and rain!
Thoroughly enjoyed everyones entries.......what a creative lot!

Steve, his label is just above his head, the French word "Merde".

Re: Challenge 410: The spice market
Thank you Steve

I understand that Star Wars was actually filmed in Tunisia - the planet Tatouine being named after a nearby town Tataween - but there is a Tetouan in Morocco that comes from the same root linguistically

Many thanks Steve. I had difficulties finding a background image...Not a good fit, I agree

Thank you Brumtaffy for your comments

Jo..if you listen to the music you'll notice the words are in Arabic. I was thrilled to find it on itunes. Felt it was more appropriate than The Clash version
