Challenge 412: Paul Simon
Paul Simon has 'universal' appeal . Probably many things wrong here, kind of a rushed job. Was wondering if they turned the sound off on Paul Simon like they did on Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen?

Re: Challenge 412: Paul Simon
Frank, Jimbean and Artwel worked out the 'secret instruction' in last week's Challenge; Ant Snell, Tooquilos, Brewell, Old Salt and Emil rather neatly fudged the issue. What was the small detail I'd cryptically urged you to pay attention to? To replace the tiny figure of Paul Simon on the stage so he matched the view on the monitors. Well done, detail spotters!

Ant Snell was the first this week, with a spectacular firework-lit stadium and a leaping fan in the foreground who, curiously, is facing away from the action. The angle of the screens is OK, but there's a darkness in them that's much deeper than the black in the rest of the stage: and that makes them pop out. Match that black!

Garfield72 has a good angle, but the black in the screens is again very much darker than the black in the stage. And you need to bring that light flare in front of the right image!

Great blending from Nick Curtain, who has matched the black areas perfectly - and added the flare on top. It's just that little man on the stage who's out of place now!

Well done, Frank, for replacing the figure on the stage: but the right hand screen is too strong against that light. The light has to be in front of it! This, really, is the essence of why this week's Challenge is harder than it looks at first glance.

A spectacular sky from Linda Eckert - but, strangely, this was the first night in a month when it didn't rain! Bit of a harsh cutout of the trees on the left: darkening the sky directly above, as you've done on the right, would make this much more convincing.

A great show from James, who has seemingly found a load more shots from the show and montaged them together to create an animated screen - clever work! I like the huge portrait at the end, but perhaps he could have retained his body?

Rather than blending the screens to the image, Sjef has darkened the stage to match the screens - clever. I like the float in, giant screen hanging over the top, but you need to make the perspective match that of the stage: rotate the whole thing counter clockwise about 10 degrees.

Clever work from tooquilos, who has taken the original shot and turned it into a night view - as far as I can tell. That's a rather fine spotlight you've drawn there! An ingenious animated version, in which Paul Simon leaves the stage and careers through the audience - very nicely achieved! I like the twinkle of light and moving heads, very good detailing.

Good blending from Jimbean, although the right screen still looks rather higher contrast than the stage around it. But I appreciate the replaced Paul SImon on the stage!

A complex image from brewell - all those hands and lighters! It's very effective, but perhaps the mushroom cloud is a little too strong? A most enjoyable image.

I see joeysala struggled to find my secret instruction - not this time, Joey! But you made up for it with immaculate blending of the screens into the background, matching the deep tones and bringing the light in front. Good work!

Extraterrestrial incursion from Old Salt, with some good hints at flying saucers. I like the raised hand in the foreground, neatly blocking Simon on the stage!

Good blending from Jota120, who has remained thoroughly on topic this week - Trevor, it mush be a record! I like the light in front of the right screen, nicely done.

Munchonu has brightened the right screen and darkened the background - but is the screen now just too bright? The black areas should be a lot darker than that! Still, the light comes in front of the right screen well.

I'm trying to interpret Emil's view, which at first I thought was someone standing in front of the viewer - but is this actually a shot from a TV screen with a blanket in the way? Sorry, Emil, you've rather baffled me here! Would be very keen to see the explanation.

A great shot from Artwel, with multiple camera phones recording the action - and turning the original scene to night, which works well. Total ingenuity in the animated version, with huge amounts of movement in the crowd as well as moving images in the screens and backgrounds - magnificent! That's exactly what it felt like!

_______________

Just for the sake of interest, here's the version I did for my own photo album. To solve the problem of blending, and the light in front of the right screen, I "cheated" - and masked the new screen to reveal some of the original one behind. This also suggests a corner of the lit-up graphic screens at the back of the stage. And, of course, Paul Simon needed to be replaced on the main stage!

Thanks Steve. I considered replacing Paul on the stage, but the figures are so small I thought Steve must mean blending the flare. He didn't!!

Maybe it is too dark but it is view from a truck. It was just a try which crossed my mind.

Ah - I see the windscreen wipers now. So, a view from the inside of a truck which has just delivered a huge pile of salt? All makes, er, sense.

Actually the truck is going to the end of a tunnel and I connected the flare of stage light with the light of the end of tunnel. Sorry for my confusing enter, next time I will be more focusing on topic. All the best. Emil

Re: Challenge 412: Paul Simon
Thanks again Steve.
Like Nick the image of the band on stage was too small for, but guess I should have inferred by differences in screen images.

I saw two potential "secret" issues to cover:
a) the flare over the screen.
b) the banding on the screen. The human eye does not notice as screen refresh too fast. However with a short camera exposure e.g. in daylight, the camera will catch it. Same happens with TV if exposure short. Need to give an exposure longer than refresh period. So I inferred at night your camera would give longer exposure and so would not capture the bands.

I see some others noticed a), b) and excellent if you got "c)" Steve's "secret instruction"

Re: Challenge 412: Paul Simon
The last time I visited a live concert was way back in 1964. The Beatles played then in a vegetable auction-hall in my country (Holland)
I've never seen such a stage in real live and didn't think about it at all: that what's on the screen, has to be the same as what's going on at the podium. But is that always the case?
Thanks for your perspective advice again Steve.

Re: Challenge 412: Paul Simon
Hey Steve.......ok, I didn't take Simon off one stage and put him on the other......I took the whole (day) stage, and put it on the night scene.......messed with it 'til it kinda/sorta blended and fit all together. I had the idea, just went about it a bit differently. Does that count?

Love the idea of the new challnge!

Re: Challenge 412: Paul Simon
Thank you Steve Yes I did use the original version and converted it to night time. The bright light was a brush that I downloaded.

Many thanks James, Sjef and Bruce.

Thanks Steve,
I realized the camera discrepancy after pondering your hint -- tried to match screen colours after that

These three arms make my point about cultural cliches and they were copied for many layers with each flipped and/or skewed for variety purposes. it really helped that the background was a dark, murky crowd.

The cloud is softened and a bit more distant, thank you.
