Challenge 416: The Bronze Bear
Hi there. First time I check into the forum for a few months and lo and behold my photo is the starting image. Thank you Steve / David. I like the ideas and techniques used to re-purpose the bear's head. Ai Weiwei would be intrigued no doubt for it was from his sculpture from a series of similar bronzes of Chinese zodiac creatures that the bear image came. http://www.somersethouse.org.uk/visual-arts/ai-weiwei-circle-of-animals-zodiac-heads provides some information about the installation when it was on last year. Cheers Vern _________________ "We don't need roads where we're going!" |

Yes. "Here is photo of Prince Harry naked. Why not add some clothes of your choosing" That would give us a lot of scope. |

Re: Challenge 416: The Bronze Bear
First in this week was Garfield72, with a colour-matched body handsome rather fine sparkling teeth. Red tongue and gums, perhaps? I like the green eyes! I like the idea in Linda Eckert's entry, but there's a major contrast issue between the bear and the background image. The second entry goes a little too far the other way! Here's how to make this one work: ![]() 1. Desaturate the background image, to knock all the residual colour out of it - it has only come from the scanning process anyway. 2. Use Levels on the background to look at the histogram. You can see how bright the shadows are - there's very little depth to this image. 3. Use Levels on the bear head to replicate the shadows and mid tones of the background layer. 4. Use the Mosaic filter on the bear to simulate the blockiness of the jpeg compression on the original; add a soft shadow beneath the head. The only thing I haven't done here is to attempt to match the lighting direction in the original! A new member this week - and PaulFX dives in with a splendid image, reproducing the stylised fur of the head on the body, with new eyes and a fine set of off-white gnashers. I like the blending between the head and the body particularly - good work. Welcome to the forum, Paul! A "bear-ass-lion" from brewell - and what a splendid creature it is! Certainly the sort of animal you'd want to approach from the back rather than the front. A handy clump of grass there, too. Good work from Frank, who has blended the bear with a real body - did you really photograph that yourself? How close were you? It's a great fit! A fine bear of mythic stature from tooquilos, with the fur texture copied onto the statue head - nice work. Love the trailer in the animated version - can't wait for the full movie! A bear wearing a bearskin from GKB - how appropriate! Perhaps a little smudging on the forehead to bring some fur texture down from the hat? Great texture from Sjef, but I can't remember ever seeing a bear that colour - perhaps that's why it's in a circus? I like the man hiding inside - a great touch. Excellent work from joeysala, with a body placed in situ to match the position of the original bear's head. Very fine blending, a seamless job - wonderful. Mariner's entry is so complete it's hard to believe the bear's head is in there - but the nose, ear shape and mouth are instantly recognisable. Great detail in the whiskers, and thanks for the Ai Weiwei reference - but you need to take that zoology class again, Michael! I love the glazed expression on James' bear - who only comes to life when cousin Yogi puts in an appearance. Clever idea, adding the emboss to make the cartoon look more three-dimensional! A wonderful image from Vibeke, the wide-eyed look of the girl (your granddaughter?) perfectly complementing the hideous face of the teddy bear. What a great idea! Ingenious work from Deborah Morley, who's head adorns a bearskin rug. A great low-angle shot on the rug, matching the angle the bear's head was taken from - did you photograph this yourself? Great texture! A rather weird dog bear from Maricliff - I'd have turned the dog's body the other way, so it matched the direction of the head. Oh, and bringing the scarf in front of the head would cover up an awkward join! Very detailed fur blending from sciteach, with a head that fits perfectly onto the bear's body. It is hard to get the direction of fur right, but this is a very strong attempt! Good work. A clever idea from Ben Mills, using the head to replace Rupert Bear. I especially like the graphic treatment, it works well. Small point: after using Refine Edge to shrink the selection, you often get a rectangular border left behind - remember to erase this! A nice piece of satire from Artwel - I like the detail of the poster and the police sign, although I'd question the use of an exclamation mark on the latter. Should Weiwei's expression be a little more doleful, though? And to answer your question: there will be no photos of Prince Harry naked this week! ________________ Many thanks to BigVern for the starting image this week. Incidentally, Vern was Project Manager on the magnificent Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth - here's a shot of it I took last week, as my ferry from France was coming into harbour: ![]() |

Re: Challenge 416: The Bronze Bear
Here's my big idea: I print a poster, go to a political rally, and when a politician makes an outrageous claim, I'll hold up the poster and shout, "Your bear-ass lion!" What do you think? I got the idea when I heard that Mitt Romney will create 12 million jobs. _________________ I aim to give pause. |

Great idea. If you can sell one poster for every bear-ass lion politician you will be extremely rich. |

Re: Challenge 416: The Bronze Bear
Thanks Steve for remarks on this and Potion Entry --- Yes I photographed this bear using a 300 mm lens from probably 100 feet -- that particular day I had 9 bears all around my truck at varying distances -- I had truck door open ready to jump back in quickly . The original with a sky change -- very hard to meter on a black bear and not blow out sky behind it Frank ![]() |
