Re: Challenge 419: The movie sign
A really difficult Challenge this week, so congratulations to all those who had a crack at it. There were two problems: the reflection in the curved edge of the sign, and the issue of how to distort the design to fit the face of the sign. The first problem led to an interesting discussion here, with a perfect solution from Luis - a filter I'd hinted at early in the debate. The second issue is really quite straightforward, so here's how it's done: ![]() 1. Create your sign as you wish, and convert all the layers into a single Smart Object. 2. Use Free Transform to distort the sign. Because it's now effectively a single layer, all you have to do is align the edges of the bounding box to the horizontal and vertical lines in the bricks. 3. That's it: a perfect fit. And because it's a Smart Object, if you edit the distortion later it will pick up from where you left off. ______________________________ First to try was Sjef, with a good-looking overall image - great colours, a good glow on the sign. The face of the sign seems to have skewed to the left somewhat; has your perspective been reversed on here? A problem with the face distortion from James, with the right side being too small compared to the left - but see above for how it's done. A very good attempt at the curved reflection! Terrific parrot action in the animated version - it always amazes me how you manage to make it so smooth. A new member this week, and dog opus has jumped in with a great movie poster parody - perfect choice of images! The right hand edge needs to lean back slightly to match the angle of the brickwork, but otherwise it's great. A good stab at the reflection, too, but see below for how the real thing looked. Welcome to the forum, Patrick! A good attempt at the reflection from Mariner - I like the trees reflected in the bevelled edge. The idea of the sign is a good one, but the problem with applying a bevel using Layer Styles is that the far edge is always too thick when it's seen in perspective. The solution is to build it manually, so you can vary the thickness according to the viewing angle. I like the simplicity of Linda's poster, but shouldn't the text and hand be in perspective? A neat attempt at the reflected edge - but the polished chrome is much, much more reflective than that. A beautiful image from Frank, giving the impression of a curved face to the sign - except, of course, it should really bulge the other way. I really like the lighting, though, which livens the scene up tremendously. A very appealing reflection from Eggbox, and I like the idea of being able to see the edge of the wall and the street beyond. A good sign, too, with a nice sense of curvature. A brave attempt at the reflection from Deborah Morley, with Polar Coordinates gone wild: but remember, the reflected bricks have to line up at the edge with the originals! I love that double reel and film, a really cool sign. And the extra reflection does bring it to life. Somewhat tricky perspective from tooquilos, as the complex elements of the sign have been fitted together: best to design the whole sign, then distort it as a unit. I really like the alternative names in the animated version - I think that's exactly how they came up with it! A clever cheat from Josephine Harvatt, opting for bakelite instead of chrome - and a suitably retro sign to go with it. Good typography, love the hand! Garfield72's design fits the sign perfectly, looking entirely in character. The reflection really is tricky, though, isn't it! Most tickled by Artwel's parody of, er, me, in the darts version of the sign - especially the way the darks seem to be cracking the surface. If I ever start to look like that, though, I'll give up drinking. Memo to self: don’t ever get a gold tooth. Excellent work from sciteach, both in the close version of the reflection and the coffee sign. The neon works really well, except that the reflection shows it was originally photographed head-on: to make it work here, the reflection needs to be translated backwards in perspective, as if we were viewing two versions of the neon from the side. A neat cinema sign from Deb Raskin, with a slight bulge on the text which I like. I'm not sure I'd be able to follow that arrow, though! Where's it telling us to go? Brushed chrome from joeysala - another neat cheat! I like the added element to the sign, but why is the word Cinema so compressed? Shouldn't it be taller within that new frame? ___________________________________ OK, so here's the big reveal: the original, unedited sign. A tricky reflection, indeed! ![]() |

Re: Challenge 419: The movie sign
Thanks Steve, I googled the image. In my defence I enclose the shot I took of a reflection and the horizontals at the top and bottom of my pan really didn't seem to line up! A good Challenge, have a good week-end all. ![]() |

Very clever Luis - much more effective than my usual "poke and hope" method _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |
