Re: Challenge 427: Smashing fun
Hi all, Just a quick note to say I'm not going to be able to write up this week's Friday Challenge until next Monday. It's my birthday on Thursday and we're going away for the weekend, and I'm not planning on taking my laptop with me (although I will be taking my gorgeous new iPad mini). Steve |

Re: Challenge 427: Smashing fun
A fun set of images to come back to - and thanks, everyone, for the birthday wishes. I spent the weekend in Istanbul, and you’ll be seeing one or two shots from there coming up in future Friday Challenges. First to do the damage was Josephine Harvatt, with a clever political reference (for those from outside the UK, that’s Prime Minister David Cameron with Mayor of London Boris Johnson in the foreground. The two were at Oxford together, and were members of the Bullingdon club, notorious for the way its vastly rich members would smash up the restaurants they patronised). A really clever piece of work - tremendous damage in the background, a great bloodied shirt, and i love the way Boris has made a Molotov cocktail out of a champagne bottle. Brilliant, Josephine! A direct assault from Ant Snell, with a burning car and flames licking through the windows - and copious quantities of smoke. I like the details of the smashed lamp, and the broken tracery in the fan light over the door - and, of course, all those smashed windows. A very active explosion from Garfield72, with debris flying through the air. Great detail again, in the smashed windows and the wrecked upper floor; not sure about the hole in the wall outside Number 11, but I do like the broken pediment above the door. Huge destruction from Jeepy, as the upper floors are completely destroyed. But could this level of destruction happen without the windows even getting cracked? And is that rather too neat a line where the top floor is missing? A terrific second entry, with the scene appearing in a newspaper report - a great idea. I like the way sciteach has the upper floor leaning in, as if it’s about to topple over, and the serious damage done to the windows. Removing the door and placing it on the ground was a good touch, but does it now appear too small for the opening? THe The smoke from the upper floors works well, but I’m not sure about the scorch marks around the doorways - they seem a little too drawn-on, somehow. Major carnage from Frank, with the building all but destroyed as the emergency services step in (although I’m not sure how helpful that sheep will be). Very nicely achieved - I especially like the way the bent railings remain. Expert damage from tooquilos, and I like the way the numbers have come detached and sit at the front of the scene. A very fine upper floor, too. Great scenes of destruction in the animated version, as Guy Fawkes does his worst - but I’m not sure why he arrives riding Thomas the Tank Engine! The firework ending is a nice touch. A clever idea from Jota120, transposing the door of No 10 to an already-wrecked building. But you do need to watch your colour palette: the stark black and white of the door are at odds with the muted browns of the background image. Match the colours and it will blend in much better: ![]() An apocalyptic scene from Mariner, with just the downstairs brickwork remaining, and a hellish image beyond. I like the replaced door and lamp arch, but would the delicate tracery of the fan light really have survived the explosion? Very fine sides to your brickwork - you’ve extruded those bricks very neatly. And many thanks for the birthday card! I really like brewell's idea of the policeman unwittingly detonating the bomb by remote control - very clever. And a fine explosion, with flying debris and copious smoke. There’s a great shockwave effect visible over the door and brickwork, which is an extremely interesting addition, and one I wouldn’t have thought of. Splendid! Playful fireworks from Linda Eckert, with explosions going off like fireworks all over the place. I like the way the door and frames have been blasted around the scene, but shouldn’t that window glass be transparent? Not that hard with the Magic Wand, I’d have thought. Most convincing destruction from Artwel, with just the ground floor facades remaining as the upper floors are entirely wrecked. The ground masonry in the road adds a lot to the realism, as do the cracked pediment and the bent railings - a very fine piece of work. And a very clever satire in the animated version - nicely done! A controlled explosion from Vibeke, with a flying door and copious flames behind the window. Are we viewing the rear window of Number 11? I’m not sure why it appears to be a wooden building! But I do like the way the policeman seems totally unbothered by the whole thing. Some good flames from marlcliff, rising from the windows and from the basement. Smashing some of the glass, or opening the door, would have helped the flames to escape! I like the way the policeman’s hat is on fire - nice touch, Phill! An interesting view from Emy, as a helicopter plunges into the building. I’m not sure why you’ve expanded the image at the sides, though, since the building no longer fits the width and so appears to be a floating façade... and is that slightly too neat a cut-off line at the top? A ragged selection might have made the top of the building more convincing. I’m amazed at the way James has managed to animate the two original characters so that they walk into the scene - and a splendid explosion that follows. Replacing the building with a serene park scene is a great idea, and I especially like the way you’ve retained the railings. Clever work! A very well-planned scene from joeysala, with a bomber lighting the fuse that snakes away through the open door - splendid lighting, especially the faintly-lit side windows and the light spilling out onto the pavement (great the way you’ve kept the sides of the steps, facing away from the light, in deep shadow). And I like the fact that it turns out to be just a firecracker in the second entry, with a different pose for the bomber. Very fine work indeed, Joey! |
