Re: Challenge 441: Down the pub
First to populate the pub this week was Frank, with an exuberant entry showing a bunch of students who really seem to know how to have a good time. I like the creative use of furniture, and the liberal sprinkling of drinks. The girl lying on the table seems to have rather too flat a bottom edge: some undulation allowed, surely? A clever flash effect - but keep it hard-edged, without blur, for a more realistic look. Looks like an entertaining set of 'shoppers from Sjef, although I don't think one cappuccino between them is going to keep the bartender happy. Is the man on the right praying over a plate of jigsaw pieces? Great decoration! A good-looking bunch from James, who seem to have a vast bottle to get through. Great interaction between them and a good sense of fun, even if the girl in white does seem to have put her hands on backwards. I like the poses and positions in Ben Mills' entry, with great fitting of bodies behind the table. The three women on the left, though, look very much to have been photographed outdoors: there's a strength of shadow and lighting direction in here that you'd never see with diffused indoor lighting. And shouldn't their legs, under the table, be rather more in shadow where the light doesn't reach them? Clever work from Darren, with the ghosts of both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones getting together for a pint - very nicely achieved. I like the detail of the smiling and frowning faces on the full and empty glasses, and the pair of CD covers lying on the table. Good work! Ingenious work from Lorenzo1977, with a Simpsons-inspired entry showing all the bar regulars. I like the way Homer is sitting on the table, and especially good to see Barney collapsed over the table. A well-placed poster from Moe's Tavern on the wall as well - altogether, a very well-conceived entry, and certainly time for a title for you. So, your profile tells me you're a gladiator by profession... I think Montage Maximus combines your many talents! I was most taken with michael sinclair's communal lavatory, although the lack of toilet paper - and the rather awkward placing of the holders - does seem to be an issue. A couple of perspective points too, Michael: the tiles on the wall behind the seats doesn't seem to be in the same perspective as the row of toilets; we shouldn't be able to see the left side of the condom machine; and are the sides of the seat covers tapered, or parallel? Either way, they don't seem to progress quite right. I like the additions in the second entry - a disturbing rat, though! I don't know what sort of pubs Emy is used to, but I've yet to see one used for delivering babies - especially with the doctors in full surgical garb suggesting it's a regular location for this sort of activity. And not a drink in sight? Thoroughly convincing work from Deborah Morley, with the students all fitting perfectly on both sides of the table. Great lighting, I like the way the pair on the left are cut off by the frame - there's a real snapshot feel to this. Looks like marlcliff had trouble finding appropriate photos - the woman on the left is fine, but the guy to her right is a really ragged cutout. And the girl under the table? Can she really be that drunk? She hasn't even started her beer! A good set of students from BigVern, and I like the way they're all too engrossed with their phones to register each others' company. But why so squashed up? They do seem very horizontally compressed. Also, they seem rather too big for the size of the table. Cool bar stools, though! A middle-eastern makeover from tooquilos, with decorative tiles and lighting - and that's the first time I've seen a lit cigarette in a pub for several years! I like the subtle movement in the animated version - and, for a change, I even like your choice of music (but then I always had a soft spot for Billy Joel). A good set of girls from Garfield72, clearly enjoying themselves. Those beer glasses are very much built along German lines, though- you'd never see anything larger than a pint in England! Good lighting, good colour matching; but to make the scene more realistic I'd add a few objects on the table - phones, handbags, maybe a couple of beer mats. An entertaining bunch of monkeys from Mariner, all smoking furiously. Are those beer glasses and bottles too small for the scene, though? a great array of smoke, and their expressions seem just right. I like the additional pair of monkeys on the wall. A great take on the Five Boys chocolate from Josephine Harvatt, with all five showing expressions perfect for their stage in the proceedings. Did you omit Stupefaction right at the end? A very convincing scene from Jota120, with a load of entertaining (and clearly entertained) students crowded around the tables. I like the way the distance is framed by the students in the foreground - a nicely composed shot. I don't know what pubs munchonu goes to, but they're not the jovial centres of social interaction I tend to frequent. A great zombie, though, with especially neat shiny eyes - cool, and somewhat disturbing. Better out than in, as my grandmother used to say. A splendid pair of chimps from Artwel, perfectly dressed and posed for the location. So many excellent touches here - the banana milkshake, the magazine and iPhone on the table, the neon sign; and opening up the window on the left wall was a real master stroke. Really splendid work, Artwel - whoever you are. You really should get around to expanding your profile, I'd really like to know what your day job is! A magnificent entry from joeysala, featuring characters from the Archie comics from the 1940s. Finding a bunch of them sitting in a bar - well, OK, milk bar - was clever enough, but redrawing the entire pub in the same style was a master stroke. A glorious idea, Joey, beautifully accomplished - and squeezed in just as I was doing my write-up! |

And not a drink in sight? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Steve, here in Florida, USA people give birth in Pubs all the time!! Here, people like to go to the Pub for a drink or 2 while they are waiting for the baby to come out... but you are right, the only weird thing in this picture was the no drinks in sight........ that.... I cannot explain... . w...e...i...r...d...!!! |

Re: Challenge 441: Down the pub
Marcliff, yes, keep up the good work, we often find it difficult, especially with personal time constraints, you've seen some of my attempts! Yes a tricky one. I found it difficult to find images so had to go back quite a long way with my image archive (interesting journey ![]() Maybe you already know concerning the pixelation, I had similar problems when first posting here. Nick gave me a very good hint (thanks again Nick). When you get FC "larger" image, should increase image pixel size to e.g. 300 or I use 240. If you have PS algorithm option set to e.g. Bicubic it does quite a nice job up-sizing. After, when you copy and paste from other poor quality source image and resize, PS has a very good job aligning with your new image size, but not perfect, as still stuck with problem described by Shannon's Information law. Just a thought, Trevor |
