Re: Challenge 465: Underdressed
An ingenious montage from Ant Snell kicks off this week's entries: there's me creating these figures on a 3D printer, complete with a printed bath plug (as featured on the TV interview) and even one of my sculptures lying on its back. A terrific array of objects! Just one observation: when you're making reflections, put all the layers into a group and then lower the opacity of the whole group. This will avoid the problem of being able to see the reflection of the leg through the reflection of the blue woman's head. Vibeke has taken her cue from the shivering man on the left - and yes, it does certainly look cold there. But the cold wouldn't prevent them from casting a reflection in the pool as the swimmer does! Some colourful bathing costumes from Linda Eckert, as the trio pose on the beach. Good matching of skin tones here - they blend in remarkably well - and the shadows help to ground them. Nicely done. A clever approach from brewell, with the job candidates eyeing up the empty suit. I always wondered about the purpose of those shots of businessmen from the back with their hands clasped - now I can see what can be done with them! A touch of the classics from Ben Boardman, who has moved the action to a fantasy Ancient Rome - clearly, the water didn't refract in those days. I like the new toga - are the others going to join in? A rather off-the-wall entry from micky47, which doesn't use our figures at all, but instead features a couple of naked men and a trio of catwalk models. Your lettering appears to be sloping down a little on the sign: for best results first set the text, then make the sign background to fit it as closely as possible, then distort both together to fit the perspective of the scene. Ingenious work from Garfield72, who has not only clothed the men in appropriate gear, he's also added T shirts relating to the Evian poster behind. A remarkably neat job, perfectly achieved! Very good work. And I like them appearing in the barracks in the second entry - good work patching the joins on that shoulder. A boy band, of sorts, from tooquilos - and the No Direction banner does seem remarkably appropriate. Loading up the animated version with no small sense of dread... but it's an ingenious biopic, starting with assembly of the final dummy and going on to clever guest appearances with notables from Kim Jong-Un to the full range of G8 leaders and the Pope... really clever and detailed work! A carnival entry from Ben Mills, with the dummies dressed up to party - on what looks like a particularly chilly day in Trafalgar Square. I like the way they're tucked behind the front pair, but are they too small for the scene? A hugely successful montage from Emy, who has placed the dummies behind bars - and perfectly integrated them into the cells, with appropriate lighting and even shadows on the ground. One tiny point: you shouldn't be able to see the shadows of the bars through the shadows of the people. Try setting the shadow mode to Darken rather than Multiply, and you may get better results. A very clever reworking of the dummies as Egyptian statues from Mariner - those costumes and headgear fit remarkably well. The only thing I'm not sure about is the camel rider, who seems just too small to be believable - but that could just be me. A magnificent entry from Deborah Morley, with the dummies standing in a rainy Paris scene - made all the more impressive by the perfect reflections, which place them all precisely into the scene. Faultless, Deborah! Great work. I like Frank's recruiting poster - they really have that unfit, raw recruit look to them, and the soldier has just the right pose. Small point: I'd take the shadow off the sign behind them, and paste the poster straight onto the wall instead. I like the idea in joeysala's underwear auditions - do you think they stand a chance? The photographs on the wall behind certainly show up these guys' shortcomings! A great idea in the second entry, too, but wouldn't it work better if they were integrated among the rest of the cast? A watery scene from michael sinclair, with them up to their ankles in sea. Only their ankles? With that much wave behind them? That seems surprising. And remember: you need a clean, sharp line where the legs enter the water. Water lines are never feathered! Good work this week - and many thanks to Vibeke for the original image. |
