Think this is one where you can keep on tinkering forever.

James, that is really funny, gave me my good laugh of the day.

Re: Challenge 471: The light flare
First to fix the face this week was Ant Snell, with a brighter, more saturated version of the image. The eye looks like it has been copied from the other one, which is always a dangerous move - but it's fairly convincing. Good work on the hair, which is perhaps the harder part; but watch those repetitive patterns! I like the way the reflected flare on the right has been rebuilt.

Vibeke has kept the eye direction of the original, and there's just the hint of a repeated pattern in the rebuilt hair. Not sure darkening the flash on the right hides it enough, though!

Very good hair on the forehead from Frank, with no sense of pattern - and that flash has been artfully removed. But why the mottled skin? What has produced that?

Good work from James, with a well-built eye and a good hair - once again, though, watch those repeated patterns. What? No animation this week? Aha - there it is, in the second entry. I see you've used my head-turning technique: effective! And I like the swivelling eyes. An excellent HotChiPs caterpillar in the third entry: what perfect motion.

A complete makeover from tooquilos, with new eyelashes and lipstick - as well as cleverly reconstructed hair that, intriguingly, now falls the other way over the forehead. Really fascinating seeing you at work in the animated version - extraordinary watching the workflow. I like the use of the eyelash brushes, especially. Intriguing to watch (although I did have to turn the frantic Mozart rondo off).

A very detailed cutout from Mariner, who has replaced the entire background: those wispy strands must have been quite a challenge. Great new eyes, too. A very strong entry.

Good work from Garfield72, who has brightened the eyes and teeth to add a lot of sparkle. The hair stops rather abruptly over the eyebrow, though; since you've done the complex cutout to change the background, it would be worth bringing in a couple of those long strands of hair over the eye.

An interesting cheat from Josephine Harvatt, who has painted out the background to turn it black - but, intriguingly, left the flare in, which now becomes a spotlight. A good new eye, although with a slightly fuzzy eyebrow. An interesting approach!

A complete new hair style from michael sinclair, who clearly didn't like the original. There's a bit of an angle issue here, though: the head is rotated at an angle, but the hair is pointing straight at us. And why the smears over the forehead? Fixed in the second entry - but the direction is still a little odd.

Completely new hair from Ben Mills, as well. It does have a real feel of cheap wig about it, as your title suggests - and isn't it a touch lopsided? Still, a very quick way of dealing with the multiple problems!

Good work from joeysala on the hair, which looks most convincing - no hint of repetition, and those highlight spots really add a sense of shine to it. There's something odd about the eye, though: is it just a little too big?

A terrific new background from Artwel - with new hair patched in to replace the original at the back, which is highly convincing. Too many parallel lines in the hair over the forehead, perhaps; but the eyes work remarkably well.

Detailed work from Marlcliff, with a rebuilt eyebrow and new eyes all round. Are the eyes a little artificial, though? I'd put that light spot back in, as it brings them to life.

Convincing work from BigVern, with a perfectly removed flare on the right and an excellent new eye. There seems to be just too much hair on the forehead, perhaps; let a little of the skin show through.

I like brewell's new background, and the rebuilt eye. There's some odd stuff going on in the forehead, though - why the sudden change of colour? And does there seem to be a greenish tint to the whole image?

Good hair and eye patching from Ben Boardman - but watch the parallel lines in the hair on the right. Brightening a subject's eyes is flattering, but you do need to be careful not to go too far: I'd tone that down a lot to stop the eyes jumping out of the image.

A great job from Deborah Morley, with finely built hair and a perfectly patched flash. Is the eye just too large, though? The iris especially seems big compared to the original.

Excellent work this week, on what was a very tricky subject. As Deborah said, it was one where you can carry on tinkering indefinitely: it's hard to know when to stop.

Thank you Steve - the spotlight was a bit of a cheat on the brief but I was running out of time (and patience!)

Unfortunately I didn't get the time for this week's Challenge but I do think that we have a collection of very talented people who tackled this one. Well done everyone for their attempts at a tricky Challenge.

Re: Challenge 471: The light flare
Something was up with the Save For Web that I never experienced before. The first post (that blank spot) was really ugly. At any rate a new adjustment layer can fix the green.

A more technical Challenge this week, as a change from the exuberant fantasies of recent Challenges.

A friend of mine is in a band and has this photo of one of the other band members. Although it's a charming portrait, it appears to have been taken through a window - which has produced a bright flare over one eye. In addition, the hair at the back is blown out by the reflection of the flash in the window behind.

Is it possible to rescue this picture? The solution will require some careful Photoshop work.

High res is here.

Re: Challenge 471: The light flare
A late entry from new member Kevin - and it's a strong piece of work, with artfully rebuilt hair. The eye has been particularly well rescued, but do watch out for repetitive patterns in the cloned hair as they do give the game away. And that hard edge on the right is a little too crisp: painting in a few loose strands would help to soften the effect. Welcome to the forum, Kevin!

Thanks Steve -- I really don't know what caused the mottled skin.
