Tooquilos, I really like the cobweb! It’s a perfect addition to the sculptured spider. Day Spider.jpg I must say, the nighttime view with the up lighting and dark background is far more dramatic. Kathryn ![]() |

Re: Challenge 474: Night for day
Fantastic images this week. You are a talented bunch! I haven't submitted a Challenge entry for ages - some started but not finished but mostly just not enough time. I had already decided I would definitely do this week's - and then I saw the challenge! Somewhat out of my comfort zone. However here it is, after many revisions, faults and all. ![]() _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |

Mariner! The manner in which you have selected the tree just amazes me. I found it impossible. |

Re: Challenge 474: Night for day
Hi James. How to select the tree. Well, first I duplicated the layer and switched the new layer to Screen mode. Then I duplicated the Screen layer about 7 or 8 times. With the Magic Wand I selected the sky and deleted it. I can't remember what settings I used. This also deleted some of the branches, so I used a brush to paint them back in again. I got rid of most of the leaves (they looked unnatural) and used a brush with Scattering and Shape and Color Dynamics set to paint them back in again. But please see Vibeke's tree. It's much better than mine. |

It never looked quite right in full sunshine, so settled for an overcast day. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 474: Night for day
An impressive montage from ahmedalij kicked off this week's mission - and it's a fairly convincing daytime, with those suitcases adding a useful foreground element. I like the overall composition: maybe curl up the edges of the photos slightly for a less rigid appearance. The elements in the second entry work much better with this perspective. A striking image from Jota120, with the spider seemingly come to life - looks rather like one of Gordon's infrared images. Off brief again, Trevor! A great idea from micky47, which is really made by the stark lighting on the painter - that's excellent! It matches the scene really well. The layer that holds the shadow on the ground, though, should be set to Multiply rather than Normal, so we can see the texture of the stone through it. A very fine second entry, with a convincing daylight scene: but watch out for those ragged edges on the building. A little manual editing of the mask needed here, perhaps. A terrific cheat from Linda Eckert - hope you didn't have to fly to Bilbao specially for the Friday Challenge! On the other hand, it is a very entertaining city. Good to see how it looks in real daylight. Some very clever reworking of the spider in the second entry - for those who don't recognise it, the original image from which that's modified is here. A touch of genius from Kathryn, who has hung the spider as a Halloween decoration - along with a variety of interesting pumpkins outside the house. Particularly taken with the Einstein pumpkin! Just one thing: wouldn't those spider legs cast shadows on the house behind? Splendid work from James, who has hung the spider from a tree, where it rocks back and forth. That's really clever. A technical note on your shadows, though: it's impossible to get a situation where the shadow of the spider and the shadow of the tree would multiply each other - either the shadow blocks the sun's light, or it doesn't. The solution is to set both shadows at 100% opacity, then put the two into a layer group and lower the opacity of the whole group. Most amused by the second entry - but I see you're too soppy to let the spider catch the dog! A very fine daylight scene from tooquilos, greatly aided by replacing that tree with a new one. The spider's web is a great addition, although it's hard to imagine what the upper strands could be attached to. An ingenious animated, with the spider building that complex web - must have taken some intricate mask manipulation! And the fly getting caught in there at the end is a a great touch. A strong entry from Garfield72, and yes, it is a difficult task - that tree is especially hard to work with. Perhaps the shadows on the building could be stronger? That would tie it in better with the dark tones in the spider. Good work from michael sinclair, with a strong daytime scene - that sun glints well behind the building, although of course the rays should probably leak in front of it a little. A well treated new tree, too. Not sure about the strong shadow of the spider, though: it doesn't point towards the sun, and the building isn't casting a similar shadow. Extremely fine work from Vibeke, who has produced a stunning and highly convincing daytime shot. I like the added sculptural busker, although he might be a little small compared to the two onlookers. Splendid! A good day scene from Sjef, with plenty of people populating the scene. It's a most convincing view, and the people do add greatly to the effect: but I think there are some scale issues here, with the kids in the background being rather too large, given their distance from the viewer. A great day scene from Mariner, with an excellent set of leaves on the tree - but sorry to see the spider has copped it! A great set of people bring the museum to life well. Nice work. Excellent work from puffin31939, with strong colours and deep shadows that make the scene work very well. There's a slight outline to some of the objects, particularly the spider legs: try using a Defringe command to reduce this a little. The couple in the foreground are an excellent addition. An ingenious solution from Deborah Morley, whose decision to make the day overcast avoids the issue of how to build deep shadows. At it's a very convincing result, with the building standing out perfectly against that grey sky. Good call, Deborah. Excellent! |

Re: Challenge 474: Night for day
Thanks again Steve. (I was trying to create a more on brief 2nd image, but problems with mother's and my sister's older rescued cats both die within a week. They'd looked after them for years. Sympathy). Fyi someone commented on my image "War of the Worlds meets Dali ", sounds like a complement ![]() ![]() IMO, well done all to take on this difficult challenge |
