Re: Challenge 487: The Japanese garden
Once again, ahmedalij came in with the first entry this week, featuring a pond bordered by rocks and containing a shoal of Koi carp. The colours blend in well with the surroundings, but as the shadows show this is a sunny day - shouldn't the water be more blue than that?

A clever entry from lwc, with bright, clear water and a great selection of fish. I especially like the Do Not Feed notice in English and Japanese - a good touch. Is it possible to hold a phone like that, though? It looks very uncomfortable!

Beautiful work from michael sinclair, who has added a whole new garden behind the walkway. Thanks for showing the components - I wouldn't have thought those fish were added afterwards. Great blending. I enjoyed the second entry, with some fine snow on the trees. Not sure about the walkway surface; and wouldn't the snow on the railing be more convincing if it were only on the upper half? Look at the tree branches.

Looks like Ant Snell has taken my instructions literally, with a fireman filling the pond with water from a hose. I like the tank of fish waiting to go in, but I think you need more distortion on the face - or is it the top of the tank that looks wrong? Either way, it's a good approach.

A stunning entry from Vibeke, with a couple of geishas in full costume positioned by the expertly flooded lake. A great sense of perspective in the water texture, and those ducks add a focus of interest. Perfect job.

A rather more beautiful garden from tooquilos, complete with bridge, arch, a waterfall and even a pagoda. But I do think the No Fishing sign should have been in Japanese! I like the fishing twist in the animated version - serves him right!

I can't imagine what Mariner must have searched for in order to come up with a traditionally dressed Japanese woman on a tightrope - but it's a great addition! The water is also spectacularly good, with the reflection of the distant pagoda adding greatly to the view. The only thing I'm not sure about is the reflected trees on the left - perhaps you should extend the real trees above to match the reflection?

A verdant entry from puffin31939, with abundant foliage that's far more spectacular than the original. I like the geishas in the foreground, but those at the back seem to be threaded through the railings... ah, I see you've corrected it in the second entry. Is there something odd about the roofline of that building? Or does it have a natural kink in it?

An excellent lake from Linda Eckert, with new trees behind to match the reflections in the water. I like the added cat, and the shadow on the pole matching the direction of the shadows - and the shadows on the water work well too. The fish don't look like they're in the water, though, and that's because we wouldn't be able to see them through the bright reflected sky - only in the shaded areas.

Great reflections from Frank, and I like the two added women, who provide a good foreground focus. The fish seem just too strongly defined, though - it's a tricky thing to get right.

A serene scene from joeysala, with a wholly new garden layout - and very appealing it is too. The child adds a good focus in the foreground. But does the walkway now appear to be sloping downwards? There's something about it that no longer matches the perspective of the background scene.

A splendid animation from James, with a heron swooping in to catch the Koi carp - and, as ever, your animal movement always impresses me. It's largely your sense of timing, as well as (I suspect) a lot of research!

A great entry from Deborah Morley, with some distinctly Japanese plants - and it looks like James's heron has come to pay a visit. I like the incense burner, and of course the carp. Very nicely achieved.

A wedding scene, I think, from Garfield72 - and the bride and groom do provide a good focus to the image. Reflecting the background is the start of making the water, of course, but there's more to water than that; it needs to reflect some sky as well, since the surface is inevitably rippled rather than a flat mirror.

Splendid work from Ben Mills, with an excellent set of reflections that ripple perfectly in the water. I like this one a lot.

I always enjoy Artwel's posts, and this is no exception - a seriously angry Koi carp bursting through the barrier, sending parts of the walkway flying. What is the girl holding in her left hand? Has she been teasing the fish with it? And could she look more Japanese?

An exceptionally good week all round.

Thankyou Steve. Yes, I saw the problem but didn't think of that solution.

Thanks, Steve.

The roof line was like that in the photo. I haven't tinkered with it!
