Re: Challenge 490: Where's Mount Fuji?
A placid view from ahmedalij, with the mountain ably reflected in the water. The thing that bothers me is the fuzzy edge to the trees. I know it's fiddly, but they deserve a tighter cutout than that! A splendid reflection from Garfield72, with fine rippling in the water. The colours confuse me, though. How is it possible for the mountain to be such a different colour from the sunset-lit trees? I do like the second entry, though, with a good sense of perspective in the positioning of the mountain. A clever pun from GKB, with Fuji mounted in an appropriate Fuji mount. Look how pale the trees are in the reflection: that's how pale the sky needs to appear, too. Nothing remains of the starting image in michael sinclair's entry, but that's not unusual... aren't those trees a little too Scandinavian for this far east? Hate to admit it, but I like the rippling in the second entry. A good view from Claudio_F, with a great cutout of the trees - I like the fact that we can see the background through the branches on the right. But you need to raise the reflection of the mountain a little. Look at the original: the more distant the buildings, the less of them shows in the reflections. A neat view from steve hill, with a diffused reflection. Good tonal matching of the sky to the trees - but is the reflection too blurred? Good to see you back, Steve. I really like the rippling in lwc's reflection - very nicely achieved. You've certainly got the right idea about not reflecting the entire scene, too, but have you chopped off too much at ground level? Look again at the original: a lot of the ground ends up being reflected. Beautiful water from Frank, and the scene is really made by that fine cherry blossom on the right - a splendid addition, that really gives the scene some foreground interest. But when the reflected trees are so pale, don't make the mountain reflection so dark! Plenty of action in Nick Curtain's exuberant entry - and an interesting conundrum: since the firework on the right is in front of the building, should it appear higher or lower in the reflection? And is the theme to celebrate your return to the Friday Challenge? There's a painterly quality to Ben Mills' entry, and the slight offsetting of Mt Fuji adds a lot to the composition. Quite a few bright areas in the trees where we should see dark Mt Fuji behind, though - try the Background Eraser to get rid of those stray highlights. A rather beautiful night scene from bwild, complete with lit moon - and I like the way you've got the light on the trees to match the direction of the moon. That moonlit beach is a great focus of interest, too. Good work! I like puffin31939's montage, with a clever drawing of the mountain in place behind the buildings, against a collage of Japanese elements. On the postcard, though, the top right corner seems to bend down, but there isn't room for this: maybe raise that corner a little to make it more plausible? The first eruption of Mount Fuji in 200 years from James - and while I like the brightness of the lava, the blue of the mountain does seem at odds with both the sky and the trees in the foreground. But there's such exuberance in the animated version that I'm prepared to overlook such niceties! If the mountain won't go to Tokyo, it seems Tokyo must go to the mountain... an ingenious extrapolation of the idea from Emy, whose repositioning of the scene at a mountain ski resort is ingenious. Just a small point: bring the cables in front of the trees for bonus realism! A beautiful evening view from Mariner, with terrific lighting. The addition of the cherry tree, the boat and the jetty really gives the scene depth and focus. Very striking indeed. A novel entry from Linda Eckert, with a somewhat unexpected world landmark making a guest appearance. You've set yourself a tricky task with the Eiffel Tower's reflection, though: since the horizontals are dead horizontal in the original, the reflections need to be as well - which means you have to work out what to do with planting those legs in the ground. Good to see the bridge from a recent Challenge making a guest appearance in joeysala's entry - it provides a real foreground focus. I think we should probably see even less of Mount Fuji in the reflection, though: the further the buildings, the less of them we see. Very neat work from Deborah Morley, with a great reflection: the subdued contrast of the trees is neatly matched by the contrast of the sky. It gives the whole scene a real sense of cohesion. Good stuff. |

Re: Challenge 490: Where's Mount Fuji?
Thanks Steve Just thought I'd try something different. The reflections were tricky though. At least I've moved from 'subtle' to 'exuberant'. Is that promotion? Nick |
