Rasta is totally stoned, just when I need him. Just look at these two old bags! They think they can walk in here at six in the morning and set up shop on my property. What a cheek! Look, they have parked their filthy rum bottle on my occasional table! Well, it’s going to pour down in five minutes, so if Rasta doesn’t get rid of them the rain will. ![]() |

Thank God, James, you're OK! You had me worried with that static image of the trash bin. Sara |

Re: Challenge 495: The flea market
All very last minute (by my standards. I usually fiddle around for most of the week.) I was pleased to find a suitable photo, that I had taken in Tortola, BVI, which had shadows in roughly the right directions. However I am now wondering if all those trees should be casting shadows over the added building... I will find out tomorrow. ![]() _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |

Re: Challenge 495: The flea market
Decided to cheat and build/render the scene in 3D. Thanks to your 3D book for helping me there. Issues: I didn't get the viewing angle completely right, left side wall is too dark, made the tiles too reflective and couldn't work out how to get the shiny halo of the bin reflecting in the floor through the material settings.. ![]() _________________ "We're going to need a bigger boat!" Re: Challenge 495: The flea market
A fine blue sky and some exotic dancers from Ant Snell certainly gives the building a carnival feel. But don't those dancers look like they're artificially lit, rather than by sunlight? Maybe tone down their saturation just a little. An entertaining bin entry, with a great couple of feet standing on the scales, but I'm not sure you've quite grasped the principle of reflections in a curved surface. One point: if that camera is sitting on a flat surface, its sides need to be parallel with other vertical edges - such as the sides of the bin. An imaginative entry from brewell, set in the heavens - combining at least two different creation theories. I'm not entirely sure how this idea came to fruition, though. A very good stab at the bin, and very nicely blended in - but don't forget to reflect the pedal. A splendid entry from Ben Boardman, full of entertaining characters. Good to see the giant pirate, dog and treasure chest on sale, the palm trees and so many Jamaican flag references - and even a Winter Olympics team going past! Excellent, Ben, this one really works well. A good attempt at the bin as well, with strong and well-considered reflections - and you even got the pedal reflection in there. A tropical entry from ahmedalij, with the buildings neatly merging into the forest. I like the warm tones here - but watch the fuzzy edges on the buildings. What, no deep red overlay this week? Ah, here it is, on the bin challenge. That looks like the bathroom from hell! An amusing entry from Garfield72, which has been given its Caribbean credentials by a frighteningly low flying aircraft (Gordon - would you approve?). A good background, but the colours still look rather cool for the climate. A remarkably accurate bin entry from GKB, with an almost perfect reflection - well calculated. I like the spider, too. But you forgot to reflect the pedal! I like the mix of buildings and signs in Frank's entry, which moves the scene neatly to a more exotic location. But is the building rather too small for the background? I'm just looking at the size of the bananas relative to the man outside the building. A clever image from srawland, with a load of market stalls that push the building very much to the background, where it blends in rather well. And a nice touch getting Captain Jack Sparrow in there - even if he is a little short! The second entry is better, with those trees adding a good backdrop. A remarkable entry from James, with not only couple of people, but a clutch of curious bird-like things rushing back and forth - all in a great beach setting. I like the people's movement and gestures especially. After the first version of the bin challenge, I too was one of those who studied the image waiting for something to happen - so it's great to see how quickly you responded and added a furry monster to the scene. An excellent reflection, by the way. An extraordinarily packed scene from tooquilos, with not only a caribbean foreground complete with voodoo figure but a whole funfair going on in the background. I really like the gradual transformation in the animated version - and it really shows how much detail has gone into building it. I even like the soundtrack this week. I laughed out loud at Linda Eckert's magnificent bin entry - so much chaos, so much detail! From the wet footprints to the pile of cigarettes, the insect-infested fruit, the stuffed bin and the paw-licking cat... glorious, and beautifully achieved. And a very thoughtful stab at reflecting that tiled floor - except, of course, all those added extras need to be fully reflected as well. A good setting from tissana, with jungle encroaching all around. I like the woman in the foreground, who adds a good human focus where it's needed, and that kerb is an interesting addition. Very fine work from Deborah Morley, who has blended the building immaculately into a corner street scene. Absolutely seamless, Deborah - even the shadows are from the same direction. Excellent. A clever scene from Mariner, with all the key elements moved to a new location. Good position on the horizon line! I'm not sure that evening sky fits with the strong daytime shadows of the awning and roof, though. And there's something curiously two-dimensional about the man in the doorway: has he been sheared to fit the angle? A superb blending of buildings from puffin31939: the new ones fit perfectly with the original, and the proximity of the two sets of people works extremely well. I think you're OK with the shadows - I cant see any problem there. This really is a very convincing piece of work. A most impressive entry from BigVern: is that entire scene really modelled and rendered in Photoshop? Remarkable! A fantastic solution, and one which frankly hadn't occurred to me. Top marks for ingenuity, Vern. An interesting entry from joeysala: almost nothing remains of the original scene, apart from the wall paintings which have been lifted off and grafted onto a new location. Nicely done - but there's something odd about that open door. Shouldn't it be in shadow? ______________________ Excellent work this week, and congratulations to all of you who attempted the additional bin challenge. Here's how it really looked: ![]() Most of you worked out the curved, looping tile reflections with remarkable accuracy - and of course BigVern's ingenious entry showed it with mathematical precision. Note the way the pedal is contracted as it reflects - a tricky one to guess! |

Steve said "....something odd about that open door. Shouldn't it be in shadow?" Of course it should be, and, of course, I realized it the minute AFTER I posted it! Knew you'd catch it, too! _________________ "Imagination, not invention, is the supreme master of art........" Joseph Conrad |

Thanks Steve ... yes, it was all built and rendered in photoshop. Is there some way I can post up the .psd file so that it can be downloaded by other members so they can have a play with it if they want? _________________ "Check out the big brain on Brett!" Pulp Fiction |

Re: Challenge 495: The flea market
The aircraft was photographed at the Caribbean island of St Maarten where they come over the beach below 100 feet so the perspective is quite kosher. Google St Maarten airport for some amazing low flying images - just don't stand on the beach directly under the aircraft or when one is departing; there have been many quite serious injuries from sand-blasted skin. Thanks for the comment on my pedal bin. I didn't realise that you had the version with the reflective pedal - I thought that you had the one made of non-reflective plastic ![]() Like Vern I started out reconstructing the scene in Cinema 4D but didn't have the time to finish it so just went with the Photoshop version. _________________ It only seems impossible. |

I mean that it appears you've slanted the right side of the man up vertically to make his feet match the angle of the ground. |

Re: Challenge 495: The flea market
Thank you for the critique. Captain Jack Sparrow appears to be short because he crawled in between the stands is now crouching behind the stand. In the original image he was kneeling. I had a feeling you would comment on his height but I spent a great deal of time trying to figure out just how much of him to show given his stance. |

Re: Challenge 495: The flea market
Thanks, Steve. I am delighted by your comments. I will have to try 'last minute' another time! I was pleased with the result but I did have a bit of a panic about the shadows! Both photos having people in them helped enormously with getting the scale right. I was lucky to have the ideal photo to blend with the Challenge picture _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |
