OK so I wasn't able to get the pod door to open realistically, but I did use some techniques that were new to me. ![]() _________________ I'm still learning. |

Re: Challenge 499: Open the pod doors
I had decided that opening the car door was beyond my skills. Then I attempted it and having started decided to finish. I thought I had better hide the errors as best I could so I made it into a magazine cover. (Those who have a copy of Steve's excellent Smart Objects book (Pocket Photoshop) will recognise a proper cheat! I have lifted Steve's demo straight from the book to use with my magazine cover. (Thanks, Steve!). I am not particularly happy with the design of the cover - it has been a bit rushed. I think it is lacking some more detail. ![]() _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |

I think I might as well find out where I could have improved my car so here is the image. ![]() _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |

Thanks Deborah! That was the hardest challenge ever. Yes, you did tidy up those reflections very nicely. |

Re: Challenge 499: Open the pod doors
Puffin31939 inspired me to try again to open the pod door. Think of this one as a prequel to my previous entry. The car isn't what I'd like, but his one was certainly a challenge. Thanks, Steve for causing me to grow. ![]() _________________ I'm still learning. |

Re: Challenge 499: Open the pod doors
An impressive opening mechanism from Garfield72, with a convincing door action. I like the matching robot - a very neat colouring job to match the car. A very interesting location, too. A very thoughtful entry from GKB, with a fully modelled car interior. Some great touches here - the hinge mechanism, the interior glass, the steering wheel and seats. Perhaps the windscreen should refract the man seen through it more? A neatly-opened door from Frank, which refracts the Sale sign seen through it. I like the mechanism, and the artfully constructed interior; I also like the suggestion that the potential drivers are much too big for this tiny vehicle. The only thing I'd question is the Western woodcut font for the shop logo - really? Don't you think they'd choose something a little more modern? I like the added transparency in the second entry. Clever work from Ben Mills, with a TV reference. For those who don't live in the UK, Only Fools and Horses was a long-running TV show about a dodgy market trader who drove a yellow Reliant Robin - a car noted for having only three wheels, as this one does. Looks like Del Boy has come up in the world, Ben. A glorious setting from Linda Eckert - what a splendid location! I like the way you've integrated the car into the building, and there are some neat touches here, such as the miniature version the boy is playing with. But you do need to watch the shadow on those steps. Look at the shadow of the trees: they come from the right, and they need to bend over the steps - something like this: ![]() A great retro-futuristic magazine cover from Josephine Harvatt, neatly recognising that these cars are never likely to make it into production. A very good homage to the sci fi magazine series, you've got the tone just right. A funny entry from Ant Snell, combining several different motoring genres - and, of course, that's a truly ingenious way to get in and out of the car. So has the woman just broken down, or did she puncture the fuel line with those stilettos? Good to see Trevor Dennis taking part again - and that's certainly an ingenious solution to the problem of entry! But you do need to watch your perspective: the horizontals on that gantry point to a horizon very much lower than where you've placed it. I like the door mechanism in the second entry - but what happens to it when the door is closed? Won't it be left partly on the outside of the car? And watch your shadow: it needs to be separate from the car, and directly below it, otherwise the car looks like a flat cutout: ![]() A very strong image from srawland, whose car is well integrated into a suburban street. I like the view of the woman inside the car, although it's hard to see exactly what she's doing - and the woman peering out of her front windows. Very nicely achieved. The second entry is splendid: a perfectly integrated scene. See - I knew you could do it! And it's certainly good enough to earn you a much overdue title. Shall we say Pixel Perfectionist for your great attention to detail? Good work, Sara. A clever image from brewell, with a pair of alien hands prising the car open to get to the unfortunate man inside. He looks a little flattened, though: I understand that he's shrinking away from the intruder, but he still needs to be fully three-dimensional! Very accomplished work from michael sinclair, who has grafted the car onto the front of a futuristic train. A beautiful job, neatly blending the two elements together; I especially like the way you've matched the colours. Mind you, and orange train would have looked good too. Not sure about the go-faster cream detail in the second entry; doesn't it rather spoil the clean white lines? I liked puffin31939's magazine cover, which fits nicely onto that Smart Objects magazine. But don't forget the shadows! The door opening looks good to me, at this size. But I'm not sure about the Clouds background, merging the sky into the ground. Aha - there's the car by itself, in the second entry. It looks great, with a really fine interior. A novel opening mechanism from Mariner, with the door hinging all the way over the front. A good interior, and I like the bullet hole in the side. Those roll bars may be a great safety feature, but they look like they'd make it rather difficult to actually get into the car. And does the open door have the far side panel missing? Great work from Deborah Morley in removing the reflections from the original car - a very tricky task indeed. Your shadow, though, makes it look rather flat on the page; bring it down so it's less high for a more convincing effect. Very fine work from mrB, with a beautifully modelled interior and a very convincing door opening. A great location, too, making this a superb piece of work. Excellent! An ingenious entry from vahn - all very well, but how do you close it afterwards? I like the reflection of the car in the shiny handle of the can opener. A really like Artwel's souped-up hot rod - great decoration there, and I like the fact that both doors open independently. Small point: those windows will look much more convincing if you give the glass a little thickness, and perhaps repeat the reflection from the rear window: ![]() I really enjoyed joeysala's model kit - a very clever idea, and neatly executed. The panels and plastic parts you've shown really look as if they could come from this car, and the three-wheel chassis is just brilliant. A fantastic concept, Joey, with perfect execution. __________ Outstanding work this week. You should all be very proud of your achievements. |

Thanks, Steve. I am still unsure about the far side panel. As for the roll bars, here is the original: [EDIT] Yes, you are right. The side panel should be visible through the screen. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 499: Open the pod doors
Thanks, Steve. I did add some shadows but wasn't certain where they should go so they were a bit feeble! The clouds-type background was the best I could manage - I struggled to find a suitable 'proper' background so resorted to that. Thanks for this challenge. I really didn't think I would be able to manage anything convincing. _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |
