If it can't see you then, of course, you can't see it!!

Some very clever images this week. I am completely lacking inspiration this week.
Having hidden among the dinghies a hungry rhea appears hopefully at the sailing club's Easter prize giving

97% of the world's snow globe supply is controlled by the rhea cartel.

Really great entries - every time I looked on the forum someone had beaten me to an idea. Maybe should start a bit earlier!!

Re: Challenge 502: Rhea on the loose
Several people have sent me private emails stating they could not find the rhea in my submission. One even hinted I was cheating.

I cut down some of the background to make it a little easier to spot him. (her?)

I'm going now "Michael Wood's Story of England" is on the TV. It's the episode about the 14th Century and I love a good plague story.

Re: Challenge 502: Rhea on the loose
First to hide the rhea was Ant Snell, who has it cunningly disguised as a chicken - but I like the way it's far too big. Good blending into the grass, too, and the oversize egg is a funny touch.

An excellent image from Frank, whose rhea has muscled into a budgerigar cage - and there's the displaced budgie below, complete with puzzled owner. Really well placed inside the bars, and I especially like the way the bars have been broken open by the forced entry. Splendid.

A new member this week, and Daniel Millar has started off with a very subtle entry: the rhea is visible only in the reflection in the pond. The quality and tone of the bird are good, but you've made the classic mistake of simply lowering the bird's transparency. Why is this wrong? Because we can see the reflection of the waterfall through it. A reflection may be a muted version of the original, but it will still completely obscure reflected objects behind it. The solution: lower the contrast instead. Welcome to the forum, Daniel!

A beautiful image from Nick Curtain - a really fine original photograph. And the rhea is out of focus by just the right amount to blend into the background. Nicely done.

I enjoyed Kathryn's swan lake, with the rhea subtly blended into the floating swan. Is that the original reflectIon? It works really well - although perhaps the reflection of the head should be a little further forward.

Some subtle camouflage from DavidMac, whose rhea has been artfully recoloured to match the tones of the tree behind it. And yes, it does work: the bird is concealed only by its tones, which is precisely how camouflage works. Nicely done.

Camouflage of a different sort from Tom, whose rhea has taken on military markings in order to escape detection. And it seems to be working: the man in the background appears to be looking straight at it without seeing it. A neat idea - and very unlike your usual work, Tom.

I like the way tooquilos has incorporated the rhea into a rather fine real-life version of the Australian coat of arms, which is itself a fantastic construction. I like the rhea's movement in the animated version, especially when it turns to walk away from the camera - and of course the eye fluttering at the end. A great story!

I like the incorporation of the rhea into Linda Eckert's owl sanctuary - but I'm a little confused about the perspectives. The rhea appears to be looking the owl straight in the face, but the position of the legs suggests that it's some distance behind it. Maybe lose those strong shadows - they look rather artificial, and should by much shorter at this time of day when the sun is much higher in the sky.

I feel rather sorry for Ben Mills's rhea which has resorted to skulking around KFC disguised as a giant chicken. Very nicely conceived - I like the rubber glove-style comb - but that blank sign at the front is crying out for a poster. And a great pun in the second entry - now I'll never get that song out of my head.

It took me ages to spot srawland's rhea, and I'm still not entirely sure I've got it - is that it in the foreground, a third of the way from the left? A tricky one indeed! I think the image may be just too small to be able to make it out clearly. (Unless it's larger and much more camouflaged, that is.)

The rhea is nicely blended into joeysala's emu farm, where it looks entirely part of the scene. Good matching of the shadow style, and very neatly placed behind the barbed wire. And yes, the rhea is better integrated into the scene in the second entry.

A host of sightings from Ben Boardman, with the rhea appearing at a variety of travel locations - I especially like the one set in the hammock. And I was very amused by the Sesame Street Big Bird in the Telegraph report. A terrific montage, Ben, and one that's most entertaining to look at.

I studied Sjef's entry for some time before I spotted the rhea, hidden in the background of the poster on the left. I appreciate the sentiment, and the bricked-up entrance is a very clever way of getting the message across. A good banner, too, with just the right amount of transparency. Excellent.

Good work from Garfield72, who has concealed the rhea on the top deck of a London bus. And it's very neatly blended into the bus, with the glass reflections visible in front of it. Just one thing - is that the far side windows we can see through the body? Or am I misinterpreting it?

A very funny entry from michael sinclair, who has placed the rhea at the front of a group of marching soldiers. Whats the best way to hide a camouflaged bird? In a load of camouflage, of course. I like the beret it's wearing.

A splendid headwear construction from Emy, whose rhea now graces a model's head and shoulders. That must have taken some working out - and I like the way she's peeking out from inside its plumage.

GKB's rhea is performing the old ostrich trick of burying its head in the sand - or, in this case, in a miniature termite hill, which may be a worse fate than the leopard it's trying to hide from. I was going to pick you up on the sharpness of the shadow, but it does seem to match the shadows of the hills around it. Would it be so crisp on a surface as wavy as grass, though?

It seems puffin31939's rhea has taken an interest in sailing - and there it is, nestled between the characters clustered around the boat. Not hidden, perhaps, but nicely blended into the scene. I like the way it's looking up at the man.

What's the best use for a flock of rheas? Transporting snow globes, of course. Or so brewell would have us believe. Obvious, when you think about it. I like the shadows, but surely the globes would cast transparent shadows?

Many hidden birds from Deborah Morley - I counted seven, but the title suggests there are eight. I'll keep looking. At first I thought the neck appearing from the back of the house belonged to the one poking its head into the archway, but then I started to see all the others... nice hiding!

A clever hiding job from Vibeke, whose rhea is standing at the back of a pond full of flamingoes. Nicely integrated, and a well wrought reflection - but I think we should be able to see some clear water in the middle of the reflection, to match the one on the left of the shot.

Great walking movement from James - I like the fact that we can see the reflection in the water as it stands up from behind the trough. The initial appearance of just the beak is very subtle!

I was amused by Darren's rhea, who stands at the bus stop with all the other passengers - disguised by a false moustache and glasses. I like the fact that the people are all looking its way without seeing it, despite the poster behind them. Just one thing, though: tone down the white in the poster, as it's too bright to look realistic.

A really funny entry from Emil, who has produced a beautifully rendered silver version of the rhea as a Rolls Royce emblem - a really fantastic piece of work. Is this a 3D model? If not, I can't imagine how you put it together so convincingly. Excellent work, Emil.

A most entertaining week. Great work from everyone!

Thank you Steve. Yes, it is 3D model made of your Rhea picture. I was surprised how easy it was to get 3D model from flat picture.

Thanks Steve
The original image was taken at Richmond Park, as mentioned. I went with a friend to photograph the stags during the rutting season and what a noise they make. I shot this with a 300mm prime with 2X converter, as you don't really want to get too close when they're charging about.
