Very nice Deborah. It would be nice to see a larger version to see the detail in the rhea. _________________ ![]() |

I don't know the significance of the mist/smoke (?), but I found it when I googled, and I think it's pretty cool. ![]() _________________ "Imagination, not invention, is the supreme master of art........" Joseph Conrad |

Re: Challenge 503: Fill the fountain
When Steve announced this challenge I had just completed the "Hot Dog" lesson in Chapter 9 of the 6th edition. In order to have something to submit, I got through the "Making water from thin air" lesson, despite working full-time this week. However, I couldn't figure out how to create the water spray in a beautiful fountain as so many of the other entries. I hope someone can give me pointers on how to do that. Here is my humble pool. I stand in awe of all of the other member's greatness. ![]() _________________ I'm still learning. |

Re: Challenge 503: Fill the fountain
Ant Snell was the first to fill the fountain, with a strong entry in which the water catches the sun - a good touch. Watch your shadows, though: the fountain is lit from the right, but the boy in it is lit from the left. Flipping him horizontally would have helped. And is the boy nearest the camera leaning towards us? I like the water, though, and the exuberance of the scene. A nicely judged water spray from Kathryn, that looks right in place. The water in the fountain expertly judged, complete with reflection of the statue facing us: perfect. Good work. A well-filled fountain from Daniel Millar, with a dog splashing through it. I like the water trail behind the dog, and the suggestion of a reflection of the scene. The splash marks could just be achieved with dark spots, I think. Oh, and it's not concrete, it's carved stone. I was amused by GKB's chocolate fountain, in particular by the statues spewing chocolate into it. Some great extra details, too: not just WIlly Wonka (and thanks for using Gene Wilder rather than Johnny Depp) but two other characters, a chocolate pipe and even a golden ticket. Excellent. Very fine water from puffin31939, expertly cut out from its original background. The horizon issue is a tricky one: I may have been holding the camera high to get more of a view of the inside of the fountain. I like the people on the left, but the pair on the right seem more interested in the building than the fountain. Flip them, perhaps? A glorious swimming pool effect from Emy, with added waterfall, steps and secondary pool, as well as a miniature fountain at the back. Beautiful! But why the strong magenta cast to the scene? I'm not sure it adds anything. A remarkable fire fountain from brewell, which - fracking aside - is surprisingly apt: one of Bill Viola's best known works is of someone walking through water, which turns to fire. I really like the way you've got the fire to reflect off the statues, a very convincing effect. A perfect fountain from Linda Eckert, expertly lifted from its original location: all that water really does look as if it belongs right in this scene. I like the kid on the mini car on the right, but there's something about the mother and daughter on the left that's not quite right. Is it the lack of shadows from the right? Or are they just too well defined? A great centrepiece from Vibeke, although the fountain itself seems to have been reduced to a mere trickle. I like the addition of the girl in the foreground, and that horse-drawn cart at the back is a nice addition. But is it rather too large for the scene? Compare the man on the left, who's at nearly the same distance. An extraordinary amount of work from DavidMac, whose Chateau Hades provides a huge cast of characters, all involved in the scene. The interior of the fountain is beautifully made, and the girls around it and walking into it fit perfectly. The lit windows of the building have been judged finely, with an interior that matches the perspective of the building with great accuracy: and all the people, including the onlookers, have been lit from this window - as has the fountain itself. The only thing I'm not sure about is the neon lettering, particularly the bright bevel on the top of the letters - you wouldn't get that, since they're lit from within. Otherwise, this is a magnificent piece of work. Oh, and I absolutely agree with you about Las Vegas. I don't usually hand out titles after so short a time on the forum, but this extraordinary entry really deserves one... so Director of Photoshop it is. Looking forward to more of your work. I enjoyed Ben Boardman's floating tap, which has a neat surrealism to it, and the idea of the people in the fountain is a great one. But they've been photographed much closer to the camera than this: make the couple at the back larger, to reduce the perspective slightly. And while water spilling over the edge is certainly a good idea, lining it up with the tap is rather confusing: surely it would spill all around the fountain? A rather beautiful garden scene from tooquilos, with an intriguing forest background and some exotic beasts perched around it. Magical! An interesting water effect in the animated version, if perhaps a little blobby - but maybe After Effects has trouble with fountains. I like the butterflies. A solid gold fountain from michael sinclair, transported to a chateau I can't identify. The trademark oscillating animation works well, although I'm not sure why the pool is pulsating like that. The three frame movement works better than two, though. I'm not sure about the setting in the second entry: does the mountain backdrop really make as much sense as the chateau? A fun entry from Frank, with a couple dancing in the fountain and being ordered out by the police. They fit really well in there, looking suitably soaked - it's amazing how only the hair can make someone look wet. Great shadows, too. Very neat work. Extraordinary work from Deborah Morley, who has concealed last week's rhea in the scene and turned it into a spray of water. Amazing! I wouldn't have thought this was possible. Very good! No fountain but some good reflective water from Ben Mills, and featuring what looks like an overdressed Hugh Bonneville strolling past a group of Asian men and women on the grass. Knowing your work I'm looking for a visual pun here... enlighten me! A truly beautiful entry from Emil, with an evening sky inserted in the background and reflected in the windows, and a glint of sunlight catching the water. Very fine work, I really enjoyed this one. An interesting entry from joeysala, in which the water appears to be blowing out of the fountain - is that right? I rather like the effect, but I'm not sure why it's there! Some very nice water from srawland, with reflections of the fountain - sorry I couldn't work a hot dog in there for you! I suspect the fountains other people have used have been taken from photographs, but extracting them must have been a tricky task. |

Re: Challenge 503: Fill the fountain
Thanks Steve. Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka is the definitive one with Depp's being a very pale imitation. The other characters are Augustus Gloop with Violet Beauregarde floating off into the distance. More excellent work from everyone! _________________ ![]() |

"An interesting entry from joeysala, in which the water appears to be blowing out of the fountain - is that right? I rather like the effect, but I'm not sure why it's there!" I don't know why it's there either, Steve. Soooo, here are a few pictures of the fountain that I googled; smoke? condensation? I dunno know - it didn't say, but I thought it was really interesting. ![]() _________________ "Imagination, not invention, is the supreme master of art........" Joseph Conrad |

Re: Challenge 503: Fill the fountain
Thanks Steve. Hope you didn't spend too long looking for a pun as I don't think there is one this week. Hugh Bonneville looks almost the same when flipped horizontally. I did that to get the light on his face from the correct angle and I did expect a rebuke for the fact that his coat now buttons up on the lady's side, but that must have slipped under the radar. ![]() Ben. |

Thank you Steve for your kind words. You are, of course, quite right about the neon sign. Not quite sure how I managed such an obvious blunder. ![]() |

Thank you Steve, You made me buckle down and learn something new. However, if you could see the state of my apartment... I need a few of those robots you use to take care of all the mundane tasks so you are free to jet around the world and come up with pictures for these challenges. Re: Challenge 503: Fill the fountain
Thanks, Steve. I decided to make the couple on the right admire the building rather than the fountain. Sara, I also attempted to draw my own fountain but it ended up looking like a glass mushroom! I had expected cutting out the fountain to be a nightmare but Select > Colour range worked like magic. I was really surprised how easy it turned out to be _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |
