Was trying to get this looking as if painted rather than stained. Doesn't seem to be an easy way - or is there? ![]() |

Re: Challenge 507: The beach hut
Mariner, Great job getting the interior perspective roof and walls correct with an open door!!!! I had a similar idea of doing some sort of tree house/ tropical hut. Work in progress . . . Doubtful if I have any more playtime to finish and post I must say, living on the coast and visiting many coastal areas, I have never seen these tiny cookie cutter - basically storage units on primo expensive oceanfront. Re: Challenge 507: The beach hut
Hi Kathryn, They must be a UK thing because I've never seen them either and I've lived in 3 coastal areas and visited 7 more in the US. I did google them and apparently they are not supposed to be slept in. However, people aren't supposed to sleep overnight in their cars in the Santa Cruz beach parking lots here either, but if there is a hot spell, get there early because the parking lots fill up. -Sara _________________ I'm still learning. |

Re: Challenge 507: The beach hut
A very colourful entry from Garfield72 kicks off this week's beach huts. I like the ope door, the cat and the deckchair; but are those colours just too strong to be real? I'm not sure it's possible to paint wood that strong a purple, especially. A splendid montage from Ant Snell, combining many beach huts into a cacophony of seaside habitation. I really enjoyed this one - a very clever assembly, which could almost make sense in real life. I enjoyed Frank's half-painted hut, especially those very fine open doors. Good work getting the paint on the hand to match the colours on the beach hut, too. Only thing I'm not sure about is the strong diagonal between the mid blue and the dark blue - is this just too neat? A very fine transposition from Vibeke, who has moved the beach hut to a rocky hillside. Was there originally a row of them, and the others have been swept away in the landslide? This looks like a dodgy place to build! Beautiful work from stefan, with a faded paint job and something truly unnerving going on inside. I always thought those beach hut owners were in league with the devil. Great flag, too, very nicely distressed. I like the idea of DavidMac's entry, with the huts as a background for the Bridge over the River Kwai classic film. Only problem here, though, is the perspective: those conflicting horizontals in the row of huts just doesn't make visual sense, even if they are sloping up a hill. a tricky one to get right. I like the woman pointing up to the sky in brewell's entry, who seems nicely subdued compared with the enormous face. The man with the steam, though, rather confuses me. His arm seems cut off by the window interior, and I'm not sure how his legs work behind those bannister spindles, or why he doesn't have feet... there's something very Escher-like about him, and I'm not sure it's deliberate. A fabulous hut from tooquilos, beautifully decorated and with a shiny new picture window. When you\re adding shadows, though, remember that if something's leaning against railings the shadow will be on the railings but not on the background behind - and that goes for the surf board as well as the lifebelt and towels! I like the beach ball in the second entry - especially the cloud and water effects. And what a glorious interior! A well constructed and populated hut from michael sinclair, with a set of characters who fit remarkably well in the scene. I like the high drama in the second entry, with the hut perched perilously close to a huge waterfall. The water effect very nearly works: is the top edge just too hard, though? A valiant attempt. Dazzling colours from srawland - I think there are probably rules preventing this sort of outbreak of enthusiasm! I like the picnickers, although the woman with the gun does confuse me slightly. As to the interior - yes, plain wood is usually the right approach, but isn't yours rather too brightly lit for an inside view? An entertaining new location from Daniel Millar, with neatly worn paint and a well opened door. The perspective on the interior view, though, is wrong. The bottom of the poster needs to follow the same angle as the top of the bannister rail to the left, outside the hut. Also, the bottom of the opened door needs to slope up to the left, rather than down, as we're still looking at it from below: ![]() A fun-packed scene from Linda Eckert, with the beach hut moved right onto the beach. But - oh! the perspective! What on earth is going on with your horizon level? A very bright hut from hanxin16, with great colours - and even a Banksy stencil on the outside wall. I really like the way you've created the interior roof, which is the best version so far. Should the interior be less bright, though? I see puffin31939 has experienced the full splendour of a British beach holiday. Those people are gloriously despondent, especially the man - where did you find him? Excellent. A very coherent scene. Just one suggestion: use a much shorter Motion Blur on the rain for more realism. Very neat work from darren, with a great time being had at the hut. Watch the saturation of the people, though, who are much stronger than their surroundings: or, perhaps, just boost the saturation of the sand to match. A fine verdant image from Mariner, whose hut is beautifully nestled into the forest. I especially like the shadow on the side, and the subtle roof on the interior. And is that a snake wound around the bannister? A lot of work from Deborah Morley, replacing the wood texture with a painted surface - and no, there isn't an easy way to do this! I really like the detail here. And you're right about the second entry - the door was too wide. The only thing that troubles me is the hanging basked and its shadow. First, we're seeing it from above, when the angle should be from below; and if the shadow on his chest is that strong, shouldn't the roof be casting an equally strong shadow on his head and on the wall and door? I greatly enjoyed joeysala's entry, not least because she's used a couple of bathing mannequins from several weeks ago - well remembered! The hut colours are interesting, if perhaps a little bilious towards the roof, but I like the sense of faded, old paintwork here. But, just out of curiosity, why did you choose to remove the Welsh cross of St David from the Union Flag? |

Re: Challenge 507: The beach hut
Thank you, Steve, for your critique. I had not originally intended to put a woman with a gun in this image. What I had thought to do was to add some children playing hide-and-seek around the building. When I googled "sneaking around" This image came up: ![]() I thought he would be a much more interesting character to add. But, that only got me thinking,: "Why would he be sneaking out of the beach hut in such a state of undress?" So, I decided to look for a police officer with a gun drawn to add. When I googled for that, one of the first images was the woman with the gun. I added her because I knew she would cause people to pause and wonder what was going on. As for the the paint job. You did see my note about my former landlady. While that house was the brightest one on the block, it was a bohemian neighborhood so the house actually did fit in. -Sara _________________ I'm still learning. |

Thanks, Joey. I put the snake in as an afterthought to stop it all from looking like a picture from a travel brochure. |

Thanks Steve......I didn't choose to remove the Welsh cross of St David from the Union Flag - I didn"t know there was supposed to be a Welsh cross etc.....I just googled "British flag" and choose one. I'm a California prune-picker; that's my excuse (for being ignorant) and I'm sticking to it! ![]() _________________ "Imagination, not invention, is the supreme master of art........" Joseph Conrad |

Yes. I was well aware of the perspective problem. If had used just the foreground men I could almost have got away with it even though it would still have been technically incorrect. The bridge photo is the severe non match, but by then I had no time left and just posted anyway because I thought it was quite fun even if not my shining hour .......... ![]() |

Re: Challenge 507: The beach hut
Steve, you ask me where my horizon level is? I don’t know and I am not capable to correct this mistake. Here is the original background, token extra for setting your beach hut (for the construction the architect has blasted the rocks behind the house). Where does the problem lie? Thank you very much, Steve. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 507: The beach hut
Extend the lines on the side of the hut, shown here in orange, and they'll lead to the vanishing point. This gives you the height of the horizon for the beach hut, which I've shown as a horizontal line in blue. The horizon of the background image is going to be just above the sea level, shown here in green: ![]() Clearly, the beach hut was photographed from below, looking up - which makes it impossible for it to be so far below the horizon! If you want to use the hut on that beach, this is the only way it could work: ![]() |

Thanks Steve, you're right, the violet color is too strong. Maybe green is better and the yellow less bright ![]() |

Re: Challenge 507: The beach hut
Thanks, Steve. We camped for years (and still do) and I am sure the rain was just like that! However I will reduce the motion blur in future rainy scenes. I wanted a man wearing wellies and he was the best option. Although he never looked particularly cheerful, I did use liquify on his face to make him look a bit more miserable and turn his head slightly more towards the child. _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |

Thanks Steve, The mountains and bush in New Zealand has lost of huts like that one, for trampers. Have a look here for a collection of them. https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=DOC+hut+nz&espv=2&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=rAiSU8T9AobKkAWF6oCQDg&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ&biw=1370&bih=730 _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |
