Re: Challenge 510: Creative female builder
I looked straight down on an actual magazine to get the idea for how to create this. My sister is a freelance writer, and as such, it would be much more likely she would be writing the article than I would. ![]() _________________ I'm still learning. |

Nice work Daniel - but wouldn't a female builder be more likely to be building a manbot ![]() _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Now that you mention it...you're probably right. And Kim works for either gender. On the other hand (as Seinfeld said), "not that there's anything wrong with that". |

Re: Challenge 510: Creative female builder
An entertaining starting entry from Ant Snell, with a disaster of a building project in the background and the name on the van subtly changed to Kim Can't - very clever. I like the way the woman grips the drill, and the sense of movement and dust in there. Very impressive. A fun entry from sciteach, with the builder having installed a shower onto a vast wine barrel. I like her position relative to the barrel, except I feel the tap/faucet should be leaning forwards so its elliptical base is at the same angle as the ellipse of the barrel itself. Is that van now much too large and too high in the scene, though? A good glass effect on the window. Good to see you back, Steve. A very well-constructed scene from Garfield72, with the addition not only of the builder sawing a plank of wood, but a cement mixer as well. Everything fits well into the shot, with the shadow of the cement mixer foot neatly matching that of the van - very well achieved. Most convincing. A fine 1950s builder from Josephine Harvatt, with the van modified by graffiti to add a bit of girl power. I like her subtly altered eyebrows, not so sure about the turn-up of the corner of the mouth. I see Kim is taking a rest in Vibeke's entry - and very good she looks, too, in her hard hat and business suit. Do you have Photoshop CC? If so, Perspective Warp really is the way to go about distorting that van - it would make getting the angle on the back much easier, and you could stop the base sloping up quite so much. A good composition, though. I was most entertained by Ben Mills' "Creative female rebuilder", with a cleverly altered sign and a syringe complementing the saw on the side of the van. The two medics are a nice addition, but why are they so small? Surely they should be almost as tall as the van? Clever work from Darren, who has incorporated the van into a Lego scene - I didn't know they made construction workers! I like the substitution of the Lego pipe on the roof, and the appropriate doors and entire van back. Good work changing the wheel, too. Very nice job. An interesting image from tooquilos, who has moved the Egyptian town of Petra to the coast - and brought Kim along to supervise the rebuilding project. That's some perfectly assembled scaffolding - how did you cut it from its original background? I like the technique of the unfolding plans in the animated version, and the fade into the magnificent finished project - great waterfall and steam effects! And a very funny letter of recommendation at the end. Splendid. A rather kinky builder from Emy, who seems dressed more for a stag party than a building site... what did you Google to come up with this fantasy nun's outfit? I like the assembly of the image, although you do need to be aware that when you flip a stack of cement bags horizontally the text is going to be the wrong way round. I like that big hook, and I'd like it even more if it were interacting with her in some way. A very clever entry from brewell, with a subtle interpretation of the name: Mr Kimcan, it appears, is a builder who creatively constructs females. And, as his foreman is pointing out, the first leg is finished - complete with high-heeled shoe. Perfect. A good scene from hanxin16, with the van moved to a converted country pub. I like the name over the door, and the builder standing outside. With such strong shadows on the building, you need to have some shading on the woman as well. "I'm sure I could have made this even more sexist", says Artwel - only with difficulty! But it's hard not to warm to the doll-faced Barbie builder, with her newly liveried van and its neatly opened door. And I do like the new number plate. A very brave entry. A great story being told in Frank's entry, with the subtle lipstick mark on the man's neck and the highly voluptuous builder posing behind. I like the way you've opened the door, with a very convincing interior view. But why is the couple so low in the scene? Eyelines on the horizon, Frank! Even if that means the people get in the way of the van! I like the way srawland has built her montage into a magazine spread, compete with standfirst and headline. What is the builder holding, though? I can't think of any tool you'd hold like that other than a sledgehammer! Oh, and small point: on the headline, don't capitalise every word, only the first one. A clever adaptation from Daniel Millar, with a robot builder - or rather a fembot builder - on the side of the van. Is she from Metropolis? I like the cartoon version as well. I'm not sure what role the woman plays here, though. A cheerful image from joeysala, with a female builder posing in front of her van - I like the fact that the logo is repeated on her T-shirt. A very good choice of background, the perspective matching the scene rather well. A great couple of builders from Deborah Morley, but it's what they're building that's of particular interest... I assume that pair of breast-like observatory domes isn't just a coincidence? Good work repeating the logo on the second van, and that's a subtly adjusted number plate. If only I'd seen this in time for the 55th Friday Challenge! Good work this week. I enjoyed this one. |

Thanks Steve - have to say that the entire builder was a cut and paste job so I cannot take credit or blame _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Re: Challenge 510: Creative female builder
Thank you, Steve for your critique. I got the image of Kim from her website. She is holding a hammer and a putty knife. In the original image, Kim is ripping apart an interior wall. As for your one small point, before I posted this I showed it to my brother for his opinion. He thought the shading and highlights weren't realistic. He thinks if he were on the forum, his title would be "Pixel Super-perfectionist". I'll have to tell him he completely missed the headline. I meant to put it in all caps. -Sara P.S. As you know I'm in the U.S. I just checked with my sister who has been a journalist for nearly 40 years. She assures me that, in the U.S., the standard for magazine headlines is capitalizing the first letter of each word. Things might be different in the U.K. ![]() _________________ I'm still learning. |

Thanks Steve, yes I do have CC, if I can find the time I will have a go with perspective warp. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Thank you Steve. With the scaffolding I found an image on white background and just used Colour Range and adjusted the fuzziness. ![]() ![]() _________________ Dorothy: Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore |
