Anna, I can't help be impressed by your professional standard of work. Your disco ball is perfect (something as yet I cannot do), you must show us how you did it when you have time. ![]() Frank, you're the first person to get the skin shading right: convincing! ![]() |

Thanks Michael! I did it all in After Effects using Cell Pattern, expressions, overlays and key frames (and quite a bit of luck!!) ![]() _________________ Dorothy: "there's no place like home!" |

Done! I was wondering if you'd correct that misplaced shading behind the music stand. |

Re: Challenge 514: The stand-up comedian
Ant Snell was this week's first comic turn, with stand-up Peter Kay standing in - or rather, lying in - for Stewart Lee. A clever use of the space, and I like the balloons and paint can. But you need to watch those reflections: we shouldn't be able to see the reflected curtain through the reflected paint can, of course, and Kay could do with a reflection in that shiny floor as well. A great selection of comedians in the second entry - what a line-up! Again, though, don't forget the reflections. An interesting ventriloquism act from xboxmaniac, with a neatly moved microphone. But why do I get the sense that he's squeezed horizontally? There's something very compressed about the man's appearance. A touch of politics from brewell, with former Vice President Dick Cheney turning up the gags. He fits well enough behind the microphone, but his shoulders look oddly mismatched - and shouldn't that strong blue lighting be having some sort of effect on him? Politics, again, from Ben Mills - and this time it's Labour leader Ed Miliband in the spotlight, very neatly lit and placed behind the microphone. Never noticed his resemblance to the comedian Bernie Winters before! Mischievous, Ben. I like Emy's view of Katt Williams, resplendent in leopardskin suit. I'd like to see a little more of the table or a chair, though, because his pose doesn't quite make sense without it - that foot, in particular, looks as if he's awkwardly ballet dancing. Shouldn't a chair be supporting him beneath the knee? Naughty politics from Josephine Harvatt, with PM David Cameron using his deputy as a ventriloquist's dummy. But since politicians of all colours are on the bill I suppose it's a balanced view. I'd have angled the placard, of course, to make it look more part of the scene; and shouldn't both Clegg and Cameron be lit by that blue spotlight? Faces, as well as bodies? Great to see Buster Keaton making an appearance in DavidMac's entry - the solo spotlight on his head works well, especially with the body tinted by the blue light and reflecting the red from the curtain. I like the detail of the reflection of the cup! I like the way michael sinclair has turned the curtains into flickering flames - and the static devil makes the scene more impressive. The swirls around him work well. but should his hands be so translucent? Interesting that you see the devil as a comedy act! That explains a lot. Beautiful lighting in srawland's entry, whose comedian really matches the mood and colour of the scene. His pose and angle of view are perfect, too. All we need is a slightly stronger reflection - we shouldn't be able to see the curtains at all through it. Hope you managed to recover some of your lost work. Rather splendid work from Linda Eckert, with a trio of performing birds singing their hearts out.The cockerel is particularly convincing; are those thrushes (or sparrows, or wrens, or whatever) just too big? Not only do they swamp the microphone, they also look as if they'd break that music stand. A magnificently portly Elvis from tooquilos, beautifully lit and placed within the scene. (Tiny point: since we're looking up at the table, we should certainly be looking up at the mirror ball as well, rather than straight on.) A fantastic animated version, using dozens of poses of the same Elvis - Photo Knockouts rules, right? A really funny interpretation, and a fantastic model of the disco ball at the end. Superb. I don't recognise Frank's ventriloquist, but he's perfectly placed within the scene: the lighting is just right, as is the reflection and shadow. Is this the same man that xboxmaniac used? It's the same standby dummy. Very good work, Frank. A great Tommy Cooper routine from James, with multiple views of the great comic combined to make the story work. I like the dropped pot that sprouts legs and runs off - and the sliding table is a neat trick. A young Dawn French in Deborah Morley's entry - and very well lit she is too, fitting perfectly under that spotlight. (I once played the piano for her when she was doing a gig with Jennifer Saunders and their pianist didn't show up... but that's another story.) Immaculate lighting and positioning. A glorious entry from Ben Boardman, featuring a somewhat elderly John Cleese - although he's noticeably slimmer than the very portly version I saw at their concert in London recently. A perfect cutout, and very neatly fitting onto that stage. I haven't seen Cleese doing this routine before - is it your invention? What a great idea! A great looking-up view from Daniel Millar, with shoes neatly catching the blue light and a great reflection. My only issue is with the spotlight on the curtain: when you shine a light on the surface the result is the colour of the surface, not of the spotlight! To make this effect work, you'd need to leave the area within the light as it is, and darken the rest of the curtain. A complex backlit scene from Garfield72, with an excellent spotlight effect. I like the way you've taken the microphone off the stand - nice detail. But why the fuzzy dark glow around him? Surely he should have a crisp edge? |

Re: Challenge 514: The stand-up comedian
Thank you, Steve. I don't see the curtain in the reflection, which may be just the argument I need to use with my sister as to why I need to get a 4G monitor. If you are referring to the small, light rectangular area, I took that to be a piece of phosphorescent tape used to show people on stage where to stand. Unfortunately, I have lost all the .psd files of all my work from The beach hut through last week's challenge, and the last two tutorials in chapter 9 through the trash can tutorial in chapter 10 of HotChiPs. I will have to repeat the tutorials. I would just move forward but I need them for my blog. But the other work, I only have copies of the .jpgs that got posted here or that I sent to various people. I am just thankful it wasn't much worse and I am taking it as a lesson in being more conscientious about backing-up my work. _________________ I'm still learning. |

Blue face, squared shoulders, got it. By the way, that's Bill Clinton's stretched body under Cheney's head. _________________ Is it necessary? Does it work? |

Thanks again Steve : the comic is Jeff Dunham who uses a number of puppets in his act - here's a link to one act : Dunhamhttp://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=jeff+dunham+videos&FORM=O1HV1#view=detail&mid=9E2BB20D3A197485E5B29E2BB20D3A197485E5B2 |
