Some good, fun work from everyone. I'm still in the wilds of north Scotland with a great idea for this week's Challenge but no Photoshop to create it! ![]() _________________ It only seems impossible. |

10 out of 10 for James’ bleating chimera! Hopefully my chimera cub will grow into the perfect example one day… .. also there’s some hilarious animal montages on show at the science museum at the moment http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visitmuseum/plan_your_visit/exhibitions/joan_fontcuberta.aspx ![]() |

Frank - very funny. Really great entries, I must admit I struggled with this, just because it seemed such a ridiculous combination. So have gone a bit daft. ![]() |

I found a better image for a Naiad. So sorry for the fiddling. Steve please feel free to remove the first two entries. ![]() _________________ I'm still learning. |

Re: Challenge 519: Build a better chimera
A good technique from Garfield72 starts this week's entries, with the lion and snake both bleached to match the white of the goat. It's very nicely achieved, producing a consistent animal. I'm not sure about the goat's head appearing out of the side like that, though. Great colours and a great landscape from ahmedalij, who has combined his lion with two goats and three snakes. Plenty of action here, and I like the way they're all blended together. But compared to the snakes, do the lion and goats look a little bored? I like the added warrior in the second entry, who gives the scene an extra sense of drama. I like the setting for sciteach's entry, which certainly gives the chimera an extra scare factor. The lion and snake work well together, but there's still the sense of the goat's head being grafted on. Perhaps if it was coloured to match the lion? A clever stuffed chimera from Ant Snell, with the goat's head superimposed on a lion's mane. This very nearly works - but it's that dazzling fluorescent green snake that really jumps out. Tone it down by desaturating a lot, and it will look much more convincing. I'm absolutely overwhelmed by darren's entry, which to my mind combines the three animals in the most convincing way possible. The goat's body has a lion's head and mane, but the lion still has a goat's horns. The forked tongue and striped tail are all that's needed to suggest the snake, and the rock it's perched on gives it real majesty. This is an extraordinary and magnificent piece of work, both ingenious in its conception and immaculate in its construction. Beautiful, Darren, a perfect entry. I'm hugely impressed. A very neat entry from brewell, in which the goat's head has been merged into a lion's body - but the back half of the body is missing, replaced by a giant snake's tail. If only we could see this from the side - I'd love to see how the join works! A clever idea, well realised. A very plausible construction from James, with the bonus of twi separate views of the chimera - and I like the way the goat's head retains the lion's mouth. An interesting second entry, too, with the lion fading into a goat - that's one way to combine the animals! I like the extra frame in the third entry, where the lion is looking straight at the camera. That must have been tricky. A novel interpretation from Nick Curtain - Dr Dolittle would love one - and I like the way the snake is resting on its back. Great blending in the middle, and great recolouring of the lion. Good to see you back, Nick. Dramatic fantasy from tooquilos, whose splendidly constructed chimera is even breathing fire - while being pursued by a unicorn? Great to see it coming to life in the animated version: it really is a very fine beast. Now if you could only make that unicorn's legs gallop... Who's the best person to track down a mythical beast? Doctor Who, of course, or so Josephine Harvatt believes. And there's the brand-new Doctor, with an artfully constructed chimera featuring a goat's head on a lion's body. Perhaps add a bit more red to the Tardis and Doctor, to bring them into the same African colour space? A very novel entry from Ben Mills, who has retained the snake and added a goat's horns and beard. Most interesting is the suggestion of a lion made by the artificial mane, which very nearly works. Perhaps the mane should come in front of the snake's head at the edges, so it blends into it more. A whole host of mythical beasts from srawland, including a centaur, a minotaur, Cerberus, Medusa, and a woman in a sparkly costume who I can't quite identify. I like the sleeping satyr in the distance, and the very regal chimera. What an entertaining entry this is! And each element is beautifully accomplished. Aha - I see from your comment on the second entry that it's a dryad, and so of course hence the naiad to go with it. Perhaps a touch of Plastic Wrap to make her more watery? You're right, the figure in the third entry does work better. A rather disturbing entry from Linda Eckert - is it the two pairs of eyes that makes it so strange? An ingenious grafting together of elements, producing a genuinely strange beast. Most interesting. A very cute baby chimera from Eva Roth, which manages to combine all the elements while remaining quite charming. I wonder if it needs both sets of ears, though, or if they should be grafted together into one? A good-looking beast from Vibeke, with a great orientation on all the animals chosen. It might have been better to use the whole goat's body, including the front legs - but I like the way the snake rises up there. A great setting, and well blended into that grass. Terrific expressions from Frank: it never occurred to me that the three heads might not get on, but here they all are, sticking their tongues out at each other. One point: if you're going to use a background with such a strong lighting direction, you should really add appropriate shadows to the chimera as well. Off piste, perhaps, but a neat image from Mariner: Artemis works remarkably well with that chimera. But if they're under cover, what's casting the shadow from directly above? An entertaining entry from Deborah Morley, with a pair of snakes replicating the goat's horns - and otherwise, it's just the goat's eyes on the lion's head. Subtle! A very clever entry from Emy, using statues of a snake, lion and goat - perfectly combined and placed in a museum setting. A very neat idea, well realised. Excellent work all round, this week. |

Thanks Steve. Obviously a bit too subtle as I did add the goat's head! Have a good weekend all. ![]() |

Thanks Steve and good I managed to find time to do this one. I will be retiring in early December, so should be able to do more if I'm not seconded to hoovering, polishing and washing up, not that I don't help with that anyway! Nick |

Re: Challenge 519: Build a better chimera
Shadows are always causing me problems. I thought that perhaps there would be some sort of secondary shadow cast by the light from the left hand side. Thanks for the adivce. |

Re: Challenge 519: Build a better chimera
Thank you, Steve, for your critique. I can't claim the Satyr the centaur or Medusa since I found those on Google Images and simply cut them out. I did have to create everyone else though. I did try plastic wrap on the naiad but it didn't add anything. I'm glad you were entertained. I was very entertained creating it. _________________ I'm still learning. |

Re: Challenge 519: Build a better chimera
Thanks for your comments on the cuddly cub, James and Steve. I did play around with several versions of the head, with either set of ears and smaller horns, but the temptation to try and merge both sets of ears was too much to resist in the end... |

You are right - I thought the Tardis was looking too blue but it didn't occur to me to shift the tone (don't know why because I did it on everything else!) _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |
