Finally I am member of CC :-). The playing with 3D objects within scene is now more easy than in CS6. I used the tower to build the space station. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 527: Is it a church? Is it a rocket?
First to blast into space this week was GKB, whose church tower has four huge burners fitted (but is there space to store enough fuel in there?). Excellent use of shadows indicating a light source on the far left, and matching the Moon and space station, and I like the close-up Earth beneath. A very entertaining low-tech second entry, with the rocket standing in a milk bottle - what a nice idea! But don't forget the strong distortion that would be produced on the view through the bottle. A great blast-off from Garfield72, with the church tower fixed to a real launch pad. I like the way the burners have been fitted inside the arches. A modified USS Enterprise from Darren, with the tower replacing the two nacelles. A splendid Sci Fi background, too, with a boiling sky. But the shadow on the Moon is on the opposite side to the shadow on the Enterprise - which could only happen with a very close light source. A fantastic entry from ahmedalij, who has not only mounted the church spire onto a real rocket, he's also fixed the tower to the outside of the gantry so that it appears the whole church is opening up as the rocket blasts off from inside. A terrific piece of work, Ahmed, you've really brought this to life! A modified scene from Georges Méliès' groundbreaking 1902 film Le Voyage dans la Lune from DavidMac, in which a chorus line of - for some reason - swimsuit-clad women load the space capsule, in the form of a giant bullet, into the huge gun from which it's fired. A charming homage to a truly great film. I don't recognise the monument in Nick Curtain's entry, but it appears to be located somewhere warm and sunny - could that be Houston? I like the subtlety of the tower peeking over the edge. Good to see you back, Nick. An entertaining entry from sciteach, in which the whole church is blasting through space, and the porch has a booster rocket all of its own. Is it firing back on the church, though? I'm having trouble reading the source and direction of those red laser lines. A splendid blast-off from James: I really like the way we can see the flames through the louvred belfry, and the smoke that pushes out of it. As with many of James's animations, you really have to watch it several times to see all the detail. Excellent. A charming image from Linda Eckert, with a remarkably talented chile drawing a set of rockets and planets on a whiteboard. It's a very good sketch effect; perhaps the rocket he's drawing should be only half finished? A subtle modification of the original tower from Mariner, beautifully turned into a night scene. I like the lit lamp, and the clever illumination of the steps from the porch light. Some stained glass windows would have been nice... but more than made up for by the shooting star. An astral battle from Josephine Harvatt, in a Star Wars themed entry that shows the church attacking what appears to be a trio of domes of St Paul's cathedral. Or is the church merely transmitting? Hard to read the intent of the blue line. A clever image from brewell, whose country church is beginning to blast into space. I like the subtle sense of motion on the tower, and the way the porch is lit by the blast rockets. The smoke on the left, though, seems to have some hard cutout edges, particularly in the lower left corner; maybe just make the sign a little bigger? THere's a great sense of the tower taking off in tooquilos's entry, from a transplanted church - and I see you've been having fun with the new tree filter in the latest version. I like the stalled take-off in the animated version, and the excellent flame effects - and the crash landing is really funny. And, at last, a soundtrack I can relate to! A glorious image from Frank, prefiguring Halloween with the church taking off at night from a spooky graveyard. I really like that bearded skeleton - a splendid construction! Beautifully achieved. Great lighting on Emy's entry, with the tower orbiting serenely, satellite-fashion. But why are the solar panels so pixellated? Surely it would hav ebeen easier to draw them than to blow up a low res photograph? A different church from michael sinclair, but a rather magnificent one. I don’t mind you choosing your own church - but the Scott Monument isn't really a church, is it. Nonetheless it's an impressive piece of architecture. But why is it oscillating? Are the rockets failing to produce enough lift? Glad to see Emil getting to grips with 3D modelling in Photoshop CC. Normally I wouldn't expect the tower to inflate well, but the subtle side lighting here makes it work very well as the spokes of a giant space station. Great colouring, too. I think you're going to enjoy 3D. A tremendous sense of scale from srawland, with a tiny tower blasting towards an enormous space station. Small point: given the lack of atmosphere, and the almost infinite distance to the light source, the shadow on the church would be absolutely crisp, rather than soft. A most enjoyable week! |

Thanks, Steve. Glad you liked it. I did think about stained glass, but was very short of time this week. |

Re: Challenge 527: Is it a church? Is it a rocket?
Thanks Steve A pretty boring image from me I'm afraid. I shot the monument at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida last year. I managed to negotiate a day away from Mickey Mouse and the endless theme parks. Even then they said, 'can we go now'! Nick |

That left plume of smoke was trouble because of the deep shadow. Maybe I could lighten it up. _________________ Is it necessary? Does it work? |

A few years back the Cinématèque Française in Paris mounted a special Méliès exhibition. It was wonderful. He truly was an astonishing innovator. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thank you, Steve, for pointing this out. I kept looking at the image I created because there seemed to be something wrong but I just couldn't figure it out. I knew you would spot it. _________________ I'm still learning. |
