Re: Challenge 530: Blow my top
A pre-blast plume of smoke from Nick Curtain started this week's eruptions, the smoke neatly blending into the overcast sky. I like the way it fits inside the mouth of the volcano, in particular the shadow on the left - an excellent addition that really sets it well into the scene.

High drama from ahmedalij, with an eruption, black smoke, and rivers of lava. There's a real sense of the violence of the eruption here, and the strong red tint to the landscape works well. A very powerful image.

I like the starkness of Frank's entry, with a desaturated landscape that appears to be covered in ash. That's a very strong shadow on the right, Frank; would you get that effect from such an overcast sky, though?

Smoke, eruption and pouring lava from James, with an entry that reminds me of a school textbook explanation of the eruption process. This is certainly the most colourful volcanic activity I've seen!

A fun entry from sciteach - but is the volcano chasing me, or am I responsible for setting the whole thing off in the first place? Must stop eating those beans.

An ingenious blending of two images from puffin31939, and it's very interesting to see how the real volcano looks. Particularly strange to see the smoke pouring down the sides - not the behaviour I would have expected.

A very fine eruption from Emy, with a rim of lava just visible and a group of rather foolhardy campers watching the show. Best of all is the new lake in the foreground, reflecting the sky through its murky surface. Beautiful!

A gloriously watery scene from laddition, with glassy liquid pouring out of the volcano and pooling around the base. Not sure it's lava, but it's certainly a very good effect. Great to see you back, Véro!

A nicely lit eruption from srawland, with lava thrusting into the air and spilling over the sides. I really like the way it has tinted the whole landscape red - very effective lighting.

A touch of satire from brewell, with a host of Republican bats escaping from, presumably, the pits of hell. You know, I'm getting the impression you might be one of those pinko liberals we read so much about.

A funny entry from Wörn, with an incorrect setting sending plumes of coloured smoke into the atmosphere. A fantastic pair of rubber-clad scientists, with a great volcanic control panel. I like the way the hose snakes all the way to the volcano. Good work!

A stunning image from tooquilos - now how often do I say that? Tremendous eruption, and hugely realistic lava running down the side. I like the way the animated version starts off with the eruption out of shot, in a nearby town... and the eruption and lava are beautifully realised. You've really got the hang of those After Effects filters!

A very interesting scene from Mariner, with a town in the foreground above a lake, and the eruption just kicking off in the distance. There's a tremendous sense of foreboding here, and you can almost feel the imminent destruction. Very powerful, Michael!

Ant Snell is exactly right - you do get to visit the scene by coach, although on my trip we weren't allowed off the coach. A great view of the tourists taking in the volcano; although if it had started to erupt I might have fled back to the cafe.

A very striking image from Garfield72, with the top of the smoke plume just catching the sun as it glints over the top of the clouds. A great sky, blending in very well with the scene.

A surreal mirror image from Linda Eckert, whose volcano seems to have sported a twin and burst into life. Funny how we're trained to see faces everywhere... now this really would be a sight worth seeing!

A dramatic sky over an erupting volcano from Deborah Morley, with a brave (or perhaps foolhardy) couple watching from what they imagine is a safe distance. What? No selfies with the volcano in the background?

A powerful eruption from Vibeke, with a river of lava running down the side of the volcano. Given how bright the fire is, I'd like to see it lighting up the sides of the mound a little more. And wouldn't the sky be tinted red too?

I like the fiery fury of Daniel Millar's entry, with flames and even lightning within the smoke. Not so sure about the sparks at the bottom, though, and perhaps the left side of the smoke is a little hard-edged. And that's one brave helicopter pilot - but it really does add to the sense of scale.

An ingenious image from Darren, with a fantasy fire creature crawling out of the flames. It has just the right sense of menace and aggression to it, and both the streaming lava and the hugely dramatic sky accentuate the scene perfectly. A great idea.

An impressionistic scene from shaneworth71, with a great eruption and a doomy sky. There's a polaroid-like quality to this that works rather well. Not entirely sure about the lava flow on the left; does it need a little more detail?

Great eruptions, everyone.

Thanks, Steve for your comment. I tried to follow exactly your instructions on creating a hose. I wasn't too satisfied with the result but had no idea how to make it better.

Hi Wörn,

One technique might be to add some 'ribbing' to your hose. I'm sure that others will come up with other ideas.

Draw a path roughly along the position you want your hose to lie and then select the Brush tool. Under Window>Brushes select a hard brush with the appropriate size. Now tick the checkbox for spacing and select what spacing you think appropriate; in this case I used 65% which gave me quite an overlap of the brush sections. Stroke the path. This is your ribbing. Then I gave it a bevel and emboss layer style. Adjust the setting to suit your own image. In the shading box I selected the 'Ring' gloss contour. After that it was just a case of Distorting and/or Warping to get a perspective effect.

Tweak any or all of these settings to get your own hose.

Gordon

Re: Challenge 530: Blow my top
Thanks Steve: Re the shadow -- I went with that density based on the dark shadow (original picture) in the foreground lower left corner and on the shadow on the inner left side of the volcano itself. You'll also notice the cloud shadows on the ground ( between two hills) are relatively dense. Add to that the bright lightening strikes I added to the left of the plume so I decided to follow suit -- that's my story and I'm sticking to it (ha,ha).
