Re: Challenge 534: Light-up Tetris
I'd like to spend more time on this one but I thought it best to upload it now. We are going to have a major storm here. The prediction is for it to rain 2 inches (~5 cm) in a five-hour time period tomorrow. High winds are associated with this storm. If I don't respond to your critique, Steve, it's because I'm without electricity. It could be worse. It is already raining north of San Francisco and they are predicted to receive 8 inches (~20.3 cm) of rain in less than 24 hours.

Re: Challenge 534: Light-up Tetris
A bright entry from GKB kicked off this week, together with a miniature lava lamp. I like the glows, and the faint reflections; but don’t you think the camera would adjust its exposure for the lit Tetris blocks, and so darken the rest of the scene?

Clever work from Frank, who has created very convincing bulbs inside the blocks, with a great reflection. Best of all, of course, is the hand bringing in the extra unlit block, with the light reflecting off the bottom of the hand - very convincing. Good work.

A bright entry from Nick Curtain, with a suitably darkened background. Is there enough contrast between the lit blocks and their metal frames, though? Would the frames still be so bright?

Very evenly lit blocks from BigVern. Too even, perhaps? I like the darkened metal strips, but there's not enough sense of individual bulbs inside these blocks.

Very good lighting from Garfield72, with a real feel for the bulbs inside the blocks. I like the trailing plug, too, but that's a very odd shadow: where's the light source that's casting it? How can it relate to the lit blocks?

Clever work from Ben Boardman, who has relocated the blocks to a vast civic landscape - and doesn't it work well as a huge municipal sculpture. Nicely achieved!

Nicely lit blocks from puffin31939, with a rather splendid curtain replacing my rough wall. Perhaps the curtain should be lit by the blocks more, and in colour? I do like the faint glow, though.

A very atmospheric image from tooquilos, with convincing lights and a suitably darkened background. Very fine reflections on that background, too. A very clever animated version with the real blocks building up in the game - and what a perfect choice of music! Terrific.

I like Vibeke's relocation of the blocks to a somewhat more perfect desk than I could imagine working at. Nice lighting inside the blocks, but I'm not sure the reflection would radiate out like that. I like the inclusion of my books, even if they do appear to have shrunk a little! But: if you're going to flip an image, remember that keyboards and, in particular, the Apple logo, are not symmetrical!

Hugely entertained by Darren's ingenious pole dancing entry, with the blocks forming a perfect floor. I really like the way the blocks fit so well into the perspective of the space, and the fact that the pole goes between them: absolutely ingenious, Darren, and beautifully achieved.

A complex disassembly by Ant Snell, who has constructed a wholly new artwork from the blocks: they're all in free fall, suspended on cables, presumably waiting to light up when they touch the orange block. This must have been a lot of work!

Dancing blocks from James, zooming in and out before bursting into life. I like the fact that they don't light up every time, which builds up the suspense. Very neat!

A great Christmas scene from Linda Eckert, with added decorations. Very well lit blocks, with a subtle glow around them; but what's happened to your reflection? Why is it lurching off at an angle like that? The reflection has to go straight down!

An interesting image from shaneworth71, with a darkened scene in which only a couple of the blocks are lit. I'm not sure I understand the strong outer shadow behind the blocks - what effect are you trying to achieve here? But pleasing to look at, nonetheless.

Nicely lit blocks from Daniel Millar, in a suitably darkened scene. Good to see the portrait of Pajitnov has made it in there, hovering over his creation. Wouldn't the blocks light up the picture with a bit more colour, though?

Good lighting from srawland, and I like the rearranged block - that must have taken some doing. Why is the reflection splaying out like that, though? Verticals in a reflection need to follow verticals in the original object! Cute turtle. Hope your storm was bearable.

Good lighting from Deborah Morley, with a well darkened scene behind. I'm not sure why there's such a neat reflection in the rough matt wall, though; you'd need a lot of very gloss paint to achieve this effect!

Good work, everyone. And here's the moment you've been waiting for - the real thing:

Interesting to see how close many of you came to reproducing this.

Thanks Steve,
As usual my lack of paying attention to detail showed me up. I often flip images, but I didn't flip this one, I found it like that and didn't notice that it had been flipped.

Thanks Steve
Seems I overcooked the brightness and the lamp looks totally different to what I'd imagined. The element, which does surprise me, is the square shadow to the left of the lower red block. With the lamp lit and no ambient light around, I'd assumed this would disappear.

Thanks Steve. I thought I had darkened the rest of the scene.

Re: Challenge 534: Light-up Tetris
Thanks Steve ... I was assuming of course that each block was an individual LED and hence the even lighting ... that's my story and I am sticking to it!!!

Thanks, Steve.
Like Nick I am surprised the shadow is still there - having gone to the trouble of removing it!

The room was lit from a wall light up and to the right of this scene. When I photographed the lit blocks I didn't turn this light off.

Ah ok, so the camera has stopped down to expose for the lamp. I guess you weren't using manual mode then Steve!

I have power!

Thank you, Steve, for your critique. I was so concerned with getting the moved piece to look right that I didn't notice I had a bad reflection.

The turtle is a religious artifact. It is carved out of pipestone, which is sacred for many tribes of indigenous people here. For some reason I felt you needed a talisman for health and long life or maybe I need one.

The storm came in earlier for the South Bay than had been predicted the night before. I did manage to make it into the building I work in before the wind gave it's worst blasts. Hardly anyone was at work yesterday and those of us who did make it in were treated to a free lunch. A meeting had been cancelled but apparently not soon enough for the caterer. I never lost power but plenty of people did. However, I was so exhausted from the drive home that I decided to take a break from the computer and went to bed early. My rain gauge reads a little over 3 inches (~7.62cm).
