Maybe I missed the point this time...

-Well, Gretel, since Santa's with the Witch we better don't mess up with her...

Thanks Josephine lol.

Your entry reminded me and brought a smile to my face .. a couple of years ago I went to see The Nutcracker performed by the Russian Imperial Ballet Company. Anyway it all started off beautifully but by the time they had finished, half the sets had fallen down..one of the mice tripped and accidentally launched a ballerina into the orchestra pit. It was one disaster after the other. No one knew whether to laugh or cry! But it was certainly a memorable performance.

Re: Challenge 535: Let's get festive
A strong entry from Nick Curtain set the bar high this week: there's a great sense of evening light here, strengthened by the lit windows and the subtle glow around the name. I like the icicle lights - very festive!

Plenty of illumination from DavidMac, with a rather striking combination of an illuminated Santa on a ladder (yes, I've seen those) and that bizarre statue that seems an odd symbol of Europe's capital (never seen an illuminated one of those). And yet it does seem peeing Santas are a recognised form of decoration... good grief! What do these people think they're doing? Nice one, David.

A nice animation from James, with Santa passing behind the building while a burglar opens the door and rushes out. Great attention to detail: notice how the reflection of the lights on the pavement strengthens when the lights flash on.

Plenty of festive spirit from Ben Boardman, with Santa and his sleigh just squeezing onto the first floor balcony. I like all the figures in the windows, but... Merry Xmas? Not Joyeux Noël?

A gloriously sparkling entry from tooquilos, with enough lights to illuminate a small town festooned around the building. The animated version is simply magnificent, with the detail in each window seen in full. I especially like the snow in the snow globe... incredible, Anna, and what a wonderful way to end the year!

A complete makeover from GKB - I see Santa has opened his own store. It's a terrific piece of work, with tremendous attention to detail: the snowflakes, the icicles, the reflections in the ice, even the glow on the reindeer's nose... magnificent! And what a great way to make a Christmas card!

A funny but sad entry from Vibeke, with a drunken Santa slouched in the doorway. I like the minimal festive cheer here, and the woman and child crossing the road - and also the fine detail of the coupe and tree in the windows, and the Christmas scenes in the placards. Rather moving, actually.

All the decorations take place indoors in Min's entry, with a neon Santa and some rather artful scenes with reindeer. I like the trees in the upper floor, and removing the reflection of the original windows was a good addition.

A splendidly retro scene from Darren, showing the wonderful Alistair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge outside his somewhat grand Counting House. Great falling snow, and I especially like the way you've done the snow tracks on the road - very convincing. Good work.

A good winter scene from puffin31939, with new content in the windows, both downstairs and on the upper floors. Exceptionally good falling snow! I really like the woman in here - her umbrella strengthens the sense of driving snow.

A broader scene from Daniel Millar, with the buildings either side removed - perhaps the Immobilier has sold them? Great illuminations, and exceptionally good snow on the ground. It occurs to me that I've never seen blue Christmas lights. I like the stars on top of the trees!

Subtle decorations from Garfield72, neatly inserted into the windows so that they appear to be behind the glass. I like the string of icicles, too, and the single lit window. Is Santa rather too brightly lit, though?

The building becomes the backdrop to a ballet in Josephine Harvatt's entry, with the Sugar Plum Fairy grasping her soldier firmly by the legs. Should I recognise the Drosselmeyer name? And I wonder: since there's a reflection of the single post on the left, shouldn't the columns of the building reflect too?

A funny entry from Wörn, with Santa zooming out of shot on the witch's broomstick. I like the conversion of the shop into a witch's store, but I must question your choice of typeface: are you sure such a jokey, handwritten font is appropriate for this sort of shop?

A highly decorated shop from flash, just visible through the driving snow. I can still make out a very well lit Santa, and a Christmas tree behind... perhaps lower the opacity of the snow a little so we can see the scene a touch more clearly?

A very restrained set of decorations from Deborah Morley, with a couple of sparse trees adding to the tinsel in the windows. I like the part-hidden Santa, and his trail of footsteps. A fine overall subtlety to this one.

Clever work from michael sinclair, who has rather ingeniously twisted the building so we see it very much from the side. It might be worth taking a few extra minutes to add thickness to the interior of the windows and to set the door back a little, which would help them not to appear so flat:

I like Santa and his reindeer, though, and that's a good shot at backlighting them.

A wonderful card from BigVern, with the shop - complete with cutout windows - forming the front cover, and the message visible behind and through them. Absolutely ingenious, and beautifully achieved. Glad to see you've added some thickness to the edge of the card, but don't forget the cutout window edges too!

A rather charming scene from srawland, with minimal decorations but a love story in the upper windows. I like the mist and rain, and the man with the shopping cart rushing past... but what's that in the cart? Looks like it could be a reindeer...

Great work, everyone. And many thanks to Linda for the original photo!

Thanks Steve. FYI Drosselmeyer is the rather creepy toymaker who gives Clara the nutcracker doll; its a great story although you do have to wonder how much cheese Hoffman ate before bedtime
