Re: Challenge 541: Grilled chicken
Sorry - rush job again. The chicken has defeated me!

Re: Challenge 541: Grilled chicken
First to put his thighs on the grill (hang on, that doesn't sound right) was DavidMac, who has converted the hole into a tandoori oven. This has involved removing the original grill and chicken, and it has been immaculately patched: a beautiful reworking of the original. Ingenious, and a perfect job.

A glowing pool of laval in James's animation, with some lightly grilled chicken on the top. I've been waiting several minutes for an eagle to swoop in and nab the chicken, but nothing yet... beginning to think it's not going to happen. (I do like the lava, though.)

A gruesome production line from Ant Snell, with live chickens at one end gradually roasting as they near the flames. I think there are laws against that, even in Lanzarote!

Very fine work from LonnieK, with subtly glowing lava and a perfect chargrilled finish on the chicken. What works particularly well here is the way all the tones blend together right across the image. Understated, but very appropriate.

I like the lava in Garfield72's entry, especially the reflected glow on the metal grill - a nice touch. The chicken looks good and crispy, too. Nice work.

Good lava and chicken from Frank, but what intrigued me most was that extraordinary set of cutlass tongs. Do those things really exist? What's the exhaust pipe at the back for? I want one!

A touch of seasoning on tooquilos's chicken, and a good amount of smoke rising from the volcano. The smoke effect works particularly well in the animated version, and the flame-breathing dragon is a fantastic addition. Now that's one really well-done piece of chicken! I like the way the chicken gradually changes colour in the second attempt - very nicely achieved.

A pulled-back view from Emy, and it's just as well: that blast of volcanic lava is enough to toast a chicken in seconds. Very good choice of background, but the figure seems to be looking at something else entirely.

A range of spices coats srawland's chicken, but there's a sense of them all having merged into a single meaty unit. Much more convincing results in the second entry - I get the Clouds and Texturizer filters, but don't see how the Glass filter helps here; oh, perhaps for the shine. Clever.

I really like Wörn's idea of the demon climbing out of the volcanic pit, and being beaten back by the crucifix-wielding priest. Great texture on the demon - even if he does have a rather peculiar chest. Or maybe he's a she.

An extraordinary image from michael sinclair, who has unearthed a volcanic cave and is grilling - er - whole chickens mounted on beer cans. Not a procedure I've seen before, and nor is it one I'd expect to succeed... I like the pulsating quality to this one, but I'm not sure about the texture in the lava - looks a little too flat to me. A rather gruesome roasting pig in the second entry. Your personal challenge for next week: bring it back to life.

Carefully glowing lava from Deborah Morley, and chicken that's just warming up. Yes, this was a difficult one: a touch more contrast in the chicken would really help:

All I've done here is duplicate the chicken to a new layer, desaturated it, and change the mode to Hard Light. This gives it a lot more depth, I think.

Very fine swirling lava from Daniel Millar, with a real sense of depth here; I like the colour in the grill, which blends it in well. That chicken looks good - a strong colour consistency throughout the image. Nice work.

I like puffin31939's lava but, like so many of you, she found the chicken a very difficult proposition. This is looking good so far, Angela; I think others found that overlaying a separate texture layer on top did the trick.

Thanks, Steve. I tried all sorts with the chicken - even watched your 'Colourising' tutorial on ReTouch Pro for some ideas. Sarah has sent me some info on how improve its appearance so when I return from some time in the sun I will have another go.

Thank you, Steve, for your critique. I also want to give a big THANK YOU to Lonnie who was kind enough to reply to my pm with how he achieved his result.

When you first posted this Challenge, I thought it would be easy. Well, the lava part was easy. However, the chicken proved quite another matter. This really was a Challenge to me and quite fun.

Re: Challenge 541: Grilled chicken
Thanks Steve. I had already done a merged Hard Light desaturated layer! Should have done one more. Have a good weekend all.
