Did this with a bit of Free transform and then a lot of painting. Still not really happy with it - but just need to improve my painting: and learn how to make skin look real!

Some interesting characters indeed !!! Steve , I used a few of your tips from the Zombie in your book - mainly Liquify and Unsharp Mask cranked up.

Re: Challenge 546: The goblin's mask
I tried my best but couldn't get him to look like a goblin.

Only after arriving did Warwick Davis realise that he was at the right convention, but in the wrong costume.

Re: Challenge 546: The goblin's mask
An outstanding entry from Wörn set the bar high this week. Tremendous use of texture and lighting, the texture wrapping around the shape of the head beautifully. But that moustache... that bothers me!

Some very neatly worked skin from sciteach, and I particularly like the individually drawn hairs. Good work on lengthening the nose and thinning the lips. Very neat.

An extraordinary entry from Ant Snell - not just the bizarre makeup being applied to the goblin, but the extraordinary range of dreadful faces on the shelves. I can just about recognise, I think, Prince Charles bottom left; is that Princess Margaret next to him? What a lot of shiny, grinning celebrities!

A serene image from DavidMac, making full use of the closed eyes and hairless head of the original. The left/right mirrored background works surprisingly well, but its reflection confuses me - it doesn't seem to align with the edge of the lake. I like the floating monk's reflection, though.

A valiant attempt from puffin31939, and there's some good texture here in the skin; the nose is, perhaps, a little smudged. But the hair works well, there's real potential in that technique. This was a tricky one.

A truly bizarre entry from emanuelefrau, with the goblin having acquired some very feminine makeup and a body to match. My only real problem here is that the lighting on the head doesn't match that on the body; a tricky one to get right.

Something of a forensic reconstruction from tooquilos, with very fine texture on the skin. I really like the detailing of the edges of the skin, and the excellent hair - and, of course, the skull peeking out from behind. The only thing that jars is the number plate at the bottom - the angle seems all wrong, it's far too upright and skewed. A highly enjoyable animated version - love the mouth sneer at the end!

A funny entry from Linda Eckert, with remarkable hair and a comically red nose. But why is the skin so pale compared to the ear? Wouldn't more of a flesh tint have helped? I like the way the coat wraps around the neck, though.

A transformation into Mini Me from James - and some remarkably subtle animation, with a twitching ear and eyebrows. Nicely done - and not a flying bird in sight!

A terrific entry from Jota120, with a beautifully constructed disembodied head. Great use of textures, and a very fine background - although I prefer the second entry without the text.

A bit of a pig's ear from michael sinclair... ha ha ha ha ha

Deborah Morley wants to "learn how to make the skin look real" - and that, indeed, is a huge part of the battle. A very creditable entry nonetheless, with some great texture and distortion. I particularly like the hair and eyebrows.

A dazzling entry from Frank - how did you achieve this remarkable skin texture? I really like the open mouth, and those very liquid eyes. But it's the veins on the back of the head that really do it for me. Fantastic!

Glorious work too from Mariner, with a beautifully textured head including very subtle facial hair, and a great sneering expression. I like the extra touches, such as the earring and the star tattoo; and the goblin reflection in the brass bowl is a master stroke. Magnificent.

Very realistic work from Garfield72, with subtly created eyes. I like the way the hair falls over the side of the face. Perhaps a slight darkening in the beard area? And shouldn't those glasses refract the face slightly?

It took a lot of staring at Emy's entry to make out the goblin: the face is on the right, facing away from the tree. Very subtle work, very delicately done. The only thing that bothers me is the ear; wouldn't it have been better to have a projection casting a shadow, rather than just the shadow on its own?

A nightmare vision from Darren, with the head on a stick in a churchyard. I like the fangs and horns, and that lowered brow. Perhaps the sky should be darker, though.

A funny entry from srawland - Warwick Davis, on whom the mask was modelled, also played an Ewok in the Star Wars movies. A clever idea, but is he just too short even for this shot? Maybe he should be standing next to the stormtroopers for comparison.

Thanks Steve. It's not a brass bowl, it's gold. The hallmark is around the back. Hah!

Re: Challenge 546: The goblin's mask
Thanks Steve, I simply used a photo of an older man with our challenge as a clipping mask. I then used puppet warp to adjust eye, mouth position and then liquify for additional mouth, chin, and eye work, etc and capped it off with a strong unsharp mask. A final touch was Topaz Adjust 5 --- Clarity filter. Picture as used :

Thanks Steve for your kind comment. Working on faces is the most fun for me in Photoshop. But what is wrong with the moustache? They have to be ugly in most cases.

Re: Challenge 546: The goblin's mask
Thank you, Steve, for your critique. I would have put him more in the picture but I couldn't find anyone wearing a bankers suit and at the appropriate angle, except for a head an shoulders shot of one image. I suppose I could have just put him in another background, but when I found out he had played an Ewok...

Some great work this week, Unfortunately, I could not find the time, I was flat out with a funeral for my sister-in-law, which included making a slideshow of photos from 79 years of living.

Interesting. The reflections in the lake are real. The only created reflection is the monk. I simply took an existing lake photo, complete with reflections, and flipped and overlapped it with a "blend if" adjustment. But studying the result I can see exactly what you mean. It is odd.
