Thank you all for participating this week. I was concerned that people would think this week's Challenge was a bit boring. I was really glad to see all the submissions. ![]() _________________ I'm still learning. |

Re: Challenge 548: The bench and the birdbath
Ben Boardman was first to don the gardening gloves, with an excellent upgrade: the mural, added flowers and even the bird on the bath make this a much more appealing scene. And I like the addition of the hapless Jeremy Clarkson. Just one thing: your railings are facing the wrong way - from this angle (assuming they match the original wire fence) we should be able to see the sides of the triangular tops on the right, not the left. A rather charming setting from matt, with the bench and birdbath moved to an exotic new location. I like the fountain in the birdbath. Its shadow is a little skewed; the shadow of the top should be rotated about 30 degrees counterclockwise. A strong entry from Emy, placing a street gang behind the wire fence. I like the destruction of the container, and the black smoke billowing out - and great choice of graffiti. A beautiful setting from Vibeke, with spring flowers, a blooming tree and a glorious mural. Excellent choice of character on the bench, too, and good to see you got Sara's bird feeder in there. But why the grey sky? I like the conceit of sciteach's entry, with a wooden outdoor toilet and toilet paper growing on the tree. That pond looks fairly disgusting too... but not sure about the bent-over couple! Am I misreading them? Ingenious work from Linda Eckert, turning the container into a circus tent with beautifully applied graphics that precisely match the curve of the original. And a fine selection of lions populating the grounds... very accomplished. Good to see the graffiti artist from a few weeks back in the process of decorating the container in Ant Snell's entry. I can't quite work out what the man in the yellow coat is doing, though; is he a surveyor? Or just a golfer in a high vis jacket? An exotic scene from tooquilos, with a bedouin tent, glorious sunset and lights in the tree. Will they twinkle? Yes, the do, along with beautiful birds and canoe in the animated version - tremendous movement here. Is this your first delve into rotoscoping? It really is remarkably effective! A gasmask-clad visitor from James prowling around the grounds, along with an animal who moves too quickly to be identified. Great to see how you've added human movement to your already formidable stock of animal motion - I like the leap over the bench. There's something rather mesmerising about this; I could watch it endlessly. More gas masks, but an altogether darker scene from DavidMac. In his post-apocalyptic world there's a real sense of desolation; I like the smashed bench, the cracked container and above all the firepit in the birdbath. Superb work. A self-critique from Min, pointing out that her bench is facing the wrong way for the light direction. Well, that's true - but easy enough to fix; just change the lighting on the bench: ![]() The setting is good, and the bench shadow blends in well. You were right not to turn the bench around - it has to sit beneath that tree. An idyllic setting from Garfield72, with a meadow with horses beyond the fence. I like the way you've brought the sun out with the birdbath shadow - but wouldn't the tree need a shadow in the same direction? A beautiful and, amazingly, on-topic entry from michael sinclair, with a couple enjoying their garden - sitting on the bench, with the birdbath the other side of the path. I've been studying this carefully for some days, but can find no sign of Napoleonic troops. A typically surreal entry from Jota120, who has placed a camping Olympic runner Jessica Ennis into the scene, along with a stag raiding the bird table. She seems a little low in the scene to me, but otherwise - good to have you back on form, Trevor. An Alice in Wonderland setting from Mariner, with the Red Queen admonishing Alice. Good to see the tree, bench and birdbath have all made it in here - and nicely calculated shadows. Does Alice have the back of her head missing, though? The bench and birdbath are transported to Vancouver in Daniel Millar's entry. Is the bench a little small, perhaps? But I like the red birdbath. What a great way to build a park! A really funny entry from Darren, with an outdoor toilet replacing the bench (but I can't quite see what's replaced the birdbath). Great graffiti and sign - highly entertaining. And finally, srawland weighs in with her own entry - a charming proposal of marriage on a tropical beach, with the bench and birdbath putting in a guest appearance. You romantic softie! Many thanks for giving us such an inspiring image to work with. |

Thanks Steve, Grey sky, because if I had made it blue, I would have to start thinking about shadows. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Re: Challenge 548: The bench and the birdbath
Thank you Steve, for you critique. I had originally thought to put an older couple on the bench, but then Michael beat me to it, with the exact couple I was going to use. The proposal was my second choice. However, it was difficult to find a couple dressed in street clothing and who looked like normal people and not like actors or models. The majority of images I found were really good-looking young people dressed far too formally for the scene. In my book love isn't just for the young and attractive. _________________ I'm still learning. |

Re: Challenge 548: The bench and the birdbath
Thanks Steve! Those two "people" in my image... well, when I grew up those were what people called "lawn decorations." People would put them near their gardens, as they looked like people bending over to work. I guess this was purely an East Coast US thing. Luckily. |

Re: Challenge 548: The bench and the birdbath
Thank you Steve! This particular clip I keyed out the background because it was all the same colour - grey. But I have used the rotoscope in the past. Amazing tool..even though it takes a bit of tweaking here and there it is at least 80% accurate. _________________ Dorothy: "there's no place like home!" |
