Some brilliant images this week. (Well, there always are, but they seem exceptional this time :-) Simply because I think its an absolutely stunning piece of work I've put the eagle from the top of the Air Forces Memorial on the embankment in London in Marseille as well. ![]() |

Couldn't get the extra pieces of column to stick so I had to tie them together. ![]() _________________ If at first you don't succeed then skydiving is not for you. |

Unable to tolerate Arthur C Clarke's Sri Lanka based space elevator the French just had to produce a version of their own ........ ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Hi Michael, (Mariner) There's still time to correct the shadow direction before teacher sees. ![]() |

Just a bit of fun as it has been far too sunny to be inside. Maybe should have been solar panels. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 550: Half a column
A clever blending of the original base with Nelson's Column formed DavidMac's early entry, and it's a great idea. I'm a little confused by the lighting, though; Nelson is lit from the left, the column from the right, and the base mainly from above. A little baffling! But I was very amused by the second entry. Tiny point: when you use Refine Edge to make a cutout (such as the McDonald's sign) you often get a fine border remaining from the original image bounds. Be sure to erase this! A rather splendid HotChiPs tribute from Frank - but I pity the stonemason who has to carve that intricate lettering! I like the side supports, but are they enough? I was entertained by the discussion between David Mac and michael sinclair about the column textures, and I like the solution - but the lighting is still coming from opposite directions, and I think this is a more pressing issue. I enjoyed the animated entry, with the gold Liberty; but a small point: the water seems the wrong colour to reflect that sky. An extraordinary carved column from Jota120. What is this? Where can I get a closer look at it? Remarkable. On balance I prefer it with Tibet, rather than without. A fine lighthouse conversion from Garfield72. But be careful with those floodlights! At the base especially, all the added light should make the statue more visible, not less! In a case like this you need to paint the light onto the dark adjustment layer's mask, rather than adding it in white. A splendid fountain from Emy - and I really like the way the water cascades down onto the original base, and pours out of the urns. Ingenious, and beautifully achieved. I want one in my garden. A horrifying-looking fairground ride from Ant Snell, with the column fully Disneyfied. There's something very odd about the perspective of the people at the top: have they been distorted to fit? Very hard to work out what's producing this effect. I think Min's addition of the memorial Eagle is a great idea, and makes a fine topping for the column. But you do need to blend in that eagle base more convincingly. It may be easier just to lose the globe entirely, and rest the eagle directly on the column; or you could enlarge the top band to make a base for it: ![]() A truly bizarre construction from tooquilos - a great setting, but what on earth is growing up that column? Perhaps all will be revealed in the animated version... and what a terrific growing beanstalk it is! I love all the flying stuff going past, and the view from the plane window. How is this achieved? I need to pick your brains about After Effects! An ingenious cheat from Vibeke - the column disappearing into the clouds. A neat solution! And I like how you've changed the viewpoint as it ascends. A wonderful twist (ha ha) from GKB, with the column tied into a knot - really clever! I like this a lot. It made me laugh, and I can think of no better praise than that. The thing I like most about matt's entry is the great matching of the angle: we're looking up at it in precisely the right way. Very good fit, elegantly achieved. A fantastic airship port from James, which of course gives the opportunity to add a couple of birds in flight - and I like those flapping wings. A good solution! An extraordinary and rather moving piece of work from Mariner, with the Three Graces atop the columnless base. I really like the sharpness and tone of the setting, and the characters in the foreground add a real sense of humanity to the work. Very strong, Michael, and very affecting. The only small point is that the shadows of the people should be falling a little more to the left. A technological entry from Deborah Morley - and that's the way to make wind farms more acceptable. Perhaps you need a little rococo design on the blades? A serene setting from srawland, with the column ably turned into a rather elegant table lamp. I like the way you've made the reflection beneath the chair, allowing us to see the base; shouldn't the table have an equally strong reflection? Nice work, though, and a great choice of colour for the wall. A magnificent dragon climbing Darren's tower, its tail wrapped very neatly around the column. The figure on the top seems to have been photographed from slightly too low an angle to be comfortable up there, but I like the way the join has been masked by the dragon. Good work! |
