Re: Challenge 660: Rising from the ashes
Hi Guys,
Just in case anyone is wondering why I have been absent from the forum for the last few weeks (I have not been hit by a bus) I have recently started a new job and it is a bit intense at the moment, early mornings, late nights, weekends etc. Hopefully I’ll get things on track soon and will be able to get my life back and chill by entering a few more images but just for the moment I’ll have to be content with enjoying your entries. Cheers Ant

Many jobs are good ....... but intense, if it brings satisfaction, can be great!

If it's going to take over a significant chunk of your time, which would seem to be the case, then I do hope it's something that's going to bring you rewards far beyond simply the coin of the realm ............

Best of luck!

I'm glad you are OK and I hope you settle into your job soon.

Re: Challenge 660: Rising from the ashes
After viewing Anna's animation I'm almost ashamed to submit mine.

While I have enjoyed the score of The Firebird for years, I have never seen it as a ballet production. When I read up on it, I discovered that despite it's name, the bird in question is not a phoenix in the classical sense.

My video must be of the most amateurish of ballet productions. Unfortunately, Fuse has a very limited selection of clothing to choose from.

I have no idea why the first dance clip doesn't have a shadow. I rendered it just the same as the others.

I am like the cows tail this week (all behind) - as you can see I only managed to catch a feather from the phoenix! Welcome back everybody!

Re: Challenge 660: Rising from the ashes
A truly extraordinary image from DavidMac kicked off this weeks proceedings... a glorious phoenix-themed tattoo, with a body that bears as much resemblance to mine as I do to a hamster. And talking of hamsters - that's the last place I'd choose to store one. Glorious, David! Although I might brighten the body a little to match the head, and darken the shadows on the face to match those on the body.

A striking image from Linda Eckert, featuring Stravinksy's Firebird - one of my favourite pieces of music. Good to see the Fabergé egg making a reappearance! The broken strings are a good touch, too.

It seems michael sinclair is in celebratory mood with his fireworks - nicely done! I enjoyed the Superman entry, with a strong flying effect - just glad you decided not to make those clouds pulsate. (Tiny point: there's an errant bit of Superman background that trails after him, bottom right.)

An ostrich in a jar from Ben Mills - and, as he says, not a bikini in sight. Although there is a seemingly naked woman in silhouette wandering through the graveyard. It's a rather charming image, and the cutout on the ostrich is delicately done... but am I missing something obvious?

A powerful collection of images from Vibeke, with excellent colour matching and a strong story. A good sense of movement and development here - nice work!

An image of a Phoenix rising from the ruins from tooquilos, with a very fine starburst suspended from it. A great tracking-in effect throughout the animated version - a real sense of distance and movement there. The phoenix itself flaps its wings magnificently, and the moment when it bursts into flames is magical. Magnificent work.

A fine set of what appear to be steampunk ruins from Deborah Morley - with the instruction not to interpret it! But I think there's an interesting book cover there. Great phoenix.

A splendid animation from srawland, bringing the Firebird to life: fantastic dance moves, and a great choice of costume combining to make the film look very realistic. Couple of very minor points: the appearance of the ash is a little sudden; and the dancer should lose her ground shadow when she rises! But this is really good work.

A subtle entry from Josephine Harvatt, with a scorched map behind a phoenix egg. Terrific imagery, and a great colour for the egg; I think a dark wood background, rather than white, might have made the whole thing stand out rather more.

Good work!

I knew you'd say that!! The difficulty is that the body shadows are fully clipped zero black - nothing to lift. I did darken the face to match the body but didn't like the result very much. So I opted for a compromise as it is.

Thanks Steve -I am afraid it was rather a rush job on Thursday morning and I didn't have enough time to tweak it as much as I would have liked - the background came with the egg!
