Re: Challenge 700: Freeze the moment - Improved re-post
I don't normally do this, but every time I looked at my entry I realised I had missed out on key shadows. So I am re-posting. Tuesday, January 5, 1999 Published at 16:08 GMT PIE TERRORISTS FINED FOR BILL GATES ATTACK Two pranksters who attacked Microsoft boss Bill Gates with custard pies have been fined 75 euros - the minimum sentence for their messy crime. Mr Gates became a victim of Belgium's notorious "entarteurs" or pie throwers on a visit to the country last February. His attackers Brian Keegan and Remy Belvaux were fined after being found guilty of "mild violence". It is the first time any of the pie-throwers, who call themselves ''pastry terrorists'', have been convicted. The group's mastermind, Noel Godin, has vowed to "assassinate through ridicule all world celebrities who take themselves spectacularly seriously". He says Mr Gates was "only injured in his self-esteem". Here is my hi-speed reconstruction of this historic event. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

The entries this week are spectacular. David, the pie is wonderful! Gordon, all your entries are great but the balloon one is amazing. So well done! http://vimeo.com/264220592 ![]() _________________ Wicked Witch of the West: I'm melting! I'm melting! |

Re: Challenge 700: Freeze the moment
This is slightly off topic..but still relevant. I bought this for my granddaughter who wanted to see the snow. Not much chance of that in Sydney. However, I brought the snow to her. This is a preserved snowflake from Minnesota. I was initially dubious of its validity however after researching I can vouch for its authenticity. It is a process involving snow, superglue, slides, freezers and glass. Here is short video on how its done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OVUzKcLUjQ ![]() _________________ Dorothy: Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore |

http://vimeo.com/264220592 I single stepped back and forth through this. As ever Anna, it's your attention to tiny details which is so impressive. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 700: Freeze the moment
Thanks Anna I really enjoyed doing this. I have been experimenting with other subjects being shot at including a large, glass '700' which looks really nice but I think I've posted enough this week. I'll upload it to Vimeo if you want to have a look. Love the animated light bulb being smashed ... and the excellent (if slightly nerdy) video of preserved snowflakes. _________________ Time flies like an arrow but fruit flies like a banana. |

I hangout at the Khutzeymateen Wilderness Lodge (inside a protected grizzly sanctuary) all summer and view wild grizzlies on a daily basis. This boar is named Stinkeye, would not want to meet him in this situation. If you are interested in a trip of a lifetime to see grizzlies check us out online. ![]() |

No more from here (apologies x3). Some others went beyond maybe what else I was sort of thinking could do and excellent they are too. ![]() In retrospection I think there maybe 3 interpretations, or stories about this. 1) Everything is calm just planet earth being lively, have to take risks to watch her ....... |

Re: Challenge 700: Freeze the moment
This is my first foray into Hitfilm. There's a lot to it. I've learned a lot with this first, primitive animation, especially from the mistakes. Hopefully, the animation does a decent job of explaining the still, which is a screenshot because I couldn't figure out how to use the 'create a still from a frame' function of the app. Animation: http://vimeo.com/264542685 ![]() I especially want to thank Gordon for introducing me to this program, and Anna for spending her time helping me to figure it out. _________________ I'm still learning. |

Re: Challenge 700: Freeze the moment
An interesting take on the subject from Ant Snell - knife dripping blood. I’m always amazed by the shapes the splashes make. A enjoyed Ben Boardman’s bullet shattering a TV remote control, with great drama: the curvature on those volume and channel buttons really accentuates the damage. Very nicely thought out. Not sure about mirroring the smoke, though; I’d have run the Spot Healing Brush over one of those whorls. A nice moment from Ben Mills. The cat and the mouse don’t seem to be looking at each other, though; the mouse’s head is turned too far to the right. I think you could have afforded to put the mouse further back in the scene, so it’s more hidden: ![]() A terrific 20th Century Fox construction from GKB, complete with fireworks and some kind of confetti explosion in the foreground. Now that’s the way to celebrate 700 Friday Challenges! The animated really makes the most of freezing those confetti bursts. The gun in the second entry certainly creates a great muzzle flash. Have you checked the animated version, though? It stutters for me, and then stops. But I really liked the exploding glass balloon in the third entry, especially the Matrix-style animated version. A dramatic moment from Linda Eckert, who visualises sound as a series of wave patterns (either that, or she’s had a plate of bad oysters). I like all the processed fireworks, and especially that stream of sound. Very appealing. A brace of ducks from Jota120, both competing with a surfboarder. I like the contrast between the two - but I think the yellow one could do with a touch of shadow to place it more firmly in the water. Interesting second entry: while the bike is certainly caught in mid jump, the train appears stationary. Curious, that. Is there a driver? A fine volcano in the third entry, but I’d have placed the plane a little further back so it’s half emerging from the smoke. Great phone shattering from DavidMac, with tremendous detail in the phone: the broken glass, the twisted metal of the back, the plum of smoke… very well thought out, and beautifully executed. I like the way the girl’s hair flies in front of her face; but I’d say that’s the hand of someone 40 years older. I did enjoy the phantom pie flinger (if you remember the Tiswas TV show) in the second entry. That’s a very sloppy pie. And a very cool Vibeke in the third entry! Fine motion blur on tooquilos's entry, showing the bullet at the point of striking the bulb. After the great intro sequence there’s a fabulous exploding in the animated version. All done in After Effects? I was wondering, though; shouldn’t the glass deform a little before shattering? I like the spinning frozen clock in the second entry - but surely the ice would distort the objects seen through it? A very unconcerned hiker in Darren's entry, but great eye contact between him and the bear. Those things really are big, aren’t they. (And I enjoyed David Mac’s reply.) A detailed hammer shatter from Mariner, with some nicely judged angles. Would glass break in that spider web pattern, though? The radial cracks are good, but it’s that uniform ring that bothers me slightly. And - if it were me - I’d have distorted the reflection slightly in each of the cracked pieces, to accentuate the breakage. A beautiful scene from srawland, accompanied by one of my favourite pieces of classical music. Is that a falling leaf in the first half? Very serene. Looks like Hitfilm is going to give you a whole new animation direction! |
