Re: Challenge 704: The lighthouse
Well, it's a learning experience. It turns out that, unlike Photoshop, in Hitfilm a mask cannot be made stationary from what it is masking unless what it is masking is stationary as well. It can however be moved somewhat independently as long as what it is masking is stationary. I did find a tutorial on how to make simulated waves. However, by the time I had these two things figured out, I ran out of time to get the spotlight to work properly. Working 8 hours a day really is putting a crimp in my ability to learn Hitfilm quickly. But, I like living indoors too.

It's very, very crude but I'v learned a lot.

Re: Challenge 704: The lighthouse
DavidMac was the first to light up the lighthouse this week - and that’s a serious wave coming over the top! A bit of a disjuncture between the bright daytime wave and having enough darkness to see the light beams so clearly, though. Perhaps the top right should be solid black behind the waves?

Beautiful beams from tooquilos, with nicely lit portholes on the boat to provide extra interest. I like the new sea base, fitting snugly in there. Loads of action in the animated version - great movement! Especially interesting to see the boat moving so quickly without any sails…

I never fail to be impressed by the subtlety of lwc's animations, and this is no exception: the shifting motion of the waves is ingenious, matched by the twinkling light and the driving rain. And I really like the seaplane in the second entry.

A torrid sea from michael sinclair, with a perfect sky to match. Great to see you back, Michael. We hope to see a return of the Napoleonic troops in coming weeks.

Josephine Harvatt has performed a perfect cutout of Géricault’s painting The Raft of the Medusa, but even more impressive is the way the lighthouse has been treated to match the tones of the painting. Beautiful work, and most convincing.

A great new location for the lighthouse from Jota120, but it’s clearly not enough to prevent a shipwreck. A nice counterpoint between the two.

An effective repositioning from Vibeke, with the lighthouse moved to a convincing mountain top. Perfect fit, Vibeke, and a seamless composition.

A charming scene from Mariner, with idealised children that Norman Rockwell would have been proud of. A beautiful scene; the only slight jarring element for me is the colour of the girl’s dress, which seems just too saturated for real life.

A fine night sky from GKB, with a beautiful light flare effect. I like how the light swings around in the animated version - a very effective technique that would be hard to simulate without a 3D modelling app.

A solid beam of light from srawland in a night sky - but I suspect this is only preparation for the animated version. Fine sea movement there; you seem to have slowed the speed of light down to a crawl, though!

Thanks Steve

Yes, I am still pressing the saturation button too often.

That's extremely gently put Steve. This week was a mess. Some weeks it works ... and some weeks it don't. This week was a definite "don't".

Thanks Steve. Didn't think I would have time for this one.
I hope everyone had fun in Paris.

Thanks Steve!

If you're really, really bored this week, see if you can spot the tiny raindrops forming on the wood and foreground boulders...

Re: Challenge 704: The lighthouse
Thank you, Steve. The other major problem I have with HitFilm is that 16 GB of RAM are needed to optimally run it and I only have 8 GB. I cannot get an accurate preview of the speed of my animation so I am making guesses. I'm sure I could have gotten the light to look better had I not spent so much time trying to get the water to animate.
