It was for us too!!

In the end my wife went to her favourite coffee house and hired a professional barista to come for two hours after work to program the machine and teach us how to use it.

It's not for the faint hearted .........

David beautifully done, and incidentally, I have an identical coffee machine: easy to use, but oh it's time consuming and maintenance heavy.

Loyd fantasic work! I do know that Steve will love this one: It's the "Gold Star" for you.

Here's a "better-than-nothing entry"

Now that is very clever ...... I seem to remember you did a lovely dragon eye a while back in similar vein.

Reminds me of the Chinese artist Liu Bolin..

Re: Challenge 707: The brick iron
Thanks Michael - I agree with David, it is clever. Dried mud and brick... neat.

It made me think the 1940's serial Flash Gordon. One in particular had the 'rockmen'. They would lean up against a rock wall and no one could see them...

Lot of interesting entries. I was thinking of Steam Punk too lwc, but got stuck, great solution, time restricted here again, so this probably leaves too much to the imagination. Maybe an archeological dilemma. Nice solution Michael.

Michael, that's fantastic! I love how you got the texture to wrap.

Well it's been a long quiet Sunday so I managed to devote a whole day to this - which is just as well as I needed it! I have treated this quite literally as a technical challenge which is good discipline for me because I don't normally like them ........... when I suggested this picture to Steve I had something quite different in mind which he promptly turned on its head!

I photographed this in Beijing. It's interesting how once it's converted to a real object it takes on a definite 1970s early communist Chinese chunky style.

Heavy economy on cable too!

Wonderful, so well done.

If I had just stuck with the brief, I would have been done on Monday. The still will be explained in the animation. Or, maybe not.

Re: Challenge 707: The brick iron
Thank you David, Loyd.

Loyd, if you want sharpness you have to extract using the pen, not the magic wand, or whatever. On the steam iron I extracted each and every individual part (about 20 of them), then smartened them up up by filling with pure colour and adding gradients to give them some dimensionality.

Yes I had suspected that. Pen is a skill well worth acquiring. Personally I don't like the way it is implemented in PS but I still use it a lot.

Re: Challenge 707: The brick iron
Good morning, and greetings from New Orleans!

First to liberate the iron this week was lwc, who has transformed it into an alien spacecraft - an interesting approach. I like the construction, but not sure why the background trees waver with the iron. A truly stunning second entry, with the kind of iron I’d love to own - what a labour of love this image is, stuffed full of detail and intrigue. Really beautiful, Loyd, a tremendous piece of work; and the animated version really brings it to life.

A touch of genius from GKB, who has modified an Anthony Gormley sculpture to build a brick scene - a neat twist on the instructions. I like the dog, the basket of bricks, the photograph and especially that rather fine curly cable.

A thoroughly on-topic entry from DavidMac, with a beautifully built set of textures. Expertly done, with terrific finishing touches. That cord, though… is this iron only designed for smoothing handkerchiefs?

I like Mariner's Iron Man gag, with an iron rather neatly textured to match his suit. I think all that shiny copper could do with a few reflections, though; perhaps some light flares, like the suit? I like the way you’ve cut the cord.

I had to search michael sinclair’s entry to see it: but there, nestled into the rock face, is the iron. A homage to Mount Rushmore? Very nicely constructed, and neatly blended in.

An appealing relocation from Jota120, with the colours and shading perfectly blending the iron into its new surroundings. It won’t fit in that hole, though.

All I could make of srawland's entry was a tiny thumbnail - which looks really good, but very small! The url for the animation is incorrect, and when I check out your channel on Vimeo there isn’t an animation for this week.

Some knockout image this week - and thanks, David, for the starting photo.

Thanks Steve.

Very nice entries this week. I had thought of doing something along the lines of Michael’s Iron Man theme but there was just no time to fit it in. I’ll be out of commission for the next couple of weeks as I'll be in the wilds of Cornwall, hopefully not getting wet.

Enjoy New Orleans.

Re: Challenge 707: The brick iron
Hi Steve, welcome to the USA.

The nature of the side to side animation will also move the background very near to the subject... I normally try to fit a plain background so this is not quite so apparent. In this case it was just quick & silly so I didn't worry about it.

The iron was great fun and most satisfying to make. I spent more time on coming up with a suitable background than anything else... even going as far as making several background test animations so I could compare backgrounds all at once. Like this example:

Thanks for your kind words, I'm very glad that you liked my version of the 'BrickIron'.

I'm not sure why the link isn't working. It was last night because I checked before I left. I've re-uploaded so hopefully this one will work.

Communist economics. Put very short cables on each appliance and then use one long extension cord. Cheaper than long cables on every appliance ..........
