Re: Challenge 712: Cooling off
The old fan and a couple of buckets of ice didn't help much in the first entry, so we added two misting nozzles and a larger fan. The increase in wind velocity at least now blows his shirt and trouser legs a bit more... too bad the photobomber ruined the shot.

My nasty literal mind spots that there is no flash on the dog, who is closer to it than anyone.

Picky, picky, picky! I tried it more washed out, but that didn't look right either. So instead (note: frame 32) a bit of flash and added some highlights to the dog's eyes.

Did you also check for the dog's reflection, or just assume that he was a vampire?

Yes works now. Splendid.

Not quite sure why you picked England as a source of snow. It's actually surprisingly light and infrequent for the most part. Takes the Brits by surprise every time. The airports are thrown into chaos and the news channels are full of courageous children bravely struggling to school in barely ankle deep snow.

Has my Canadian sister, who regularly shovels feet of the stuff from her driveway, in a state of complete puzzlement.

I had a similar experience when I worked in Malmö, Sweden, for a couple of years. Malmö doesn’t get that much snow compared to farther north. Many of the guys that I worked with came from Stockholm, Finland and Northern Norway and would fall off their perches laughing at the antics of the “Malmö-ites” as they tried to drive in just an inch of snow, even with studded tyres. Malmö itself would grind to a halt.

Re: Challenge 712: Cooling off
In all fairness to the UK if we had large and regular amounts of snow we would probably be better equipped - as it is, once every ten years we look bemusedly skyward at the strange white floaty stuff and wonder why the roads are so slippy.

Yeah - but who wants to be fair.

In fact to be fair .... the Brits are fair game ............

Re: Challenge 712: Cooling off
It's far to humid in New Orleans for misters to work.

Thanks Anna for your help!

Pruitt just resigned amid growing scandal. Hope that makes your day.

Re: Challenge 712: Cooling off
First to switch on the fan this week - literally so - was lwc, with a neatly spinning animation and a couple of blocks of ice in front of the guard. An interesting picture-in-picture effect - but I would never be so gauche as to take a photo with my iPad! I like the double fans in the second entry - nicely changed perspective - and the flash and photobombing dog are great touches. Very effective.

A cool pool from DavidMac, in a splendid montage: great reflections of the background, neatly rolled-up trousers and removed boots. The guard’s reflection is… well, it’s close, given that it’s so hard to produce this effect. But the reflected knee’s up by the reflected shoulder, and we really shouldn’t be able to see the top of that hand… a really tricky one to get right. The distraction in the second entry helps. I like the fan dancer in the third entry, and the cunningly removed original fan. Surely she’s more Paris than New Orleans?

A giant block of ice from Josephine Harvatt, with the guard sitting on it - very cute. He must be getting a little damp. I like the way it’s melting onto the floor; perhaps the melted water should be a little less opaque. And is that folder strapped to his ankle?

If I’d known it was Canada Day, I’d have thought about a special challenge… so thanks to Darren for alerting me, in the form of a hockey player spraying the guard with ice. Very nice - I like the way he’s knocked back in his chair, and the graphic on the floor is very convincing. The mountie and beaver illustrations, though, look rather flat; a touch more shading needed here.

A huge block of ice from GKB, with splendid refractions seen through it. A terrific melting effect in the animated version - complete with EPA boss Scott Pruitt, who, after seeing this devastating critique of his job, has been forced to resign. Such is the power of Photoshop! Love the devilish laughter.

I greatly enjoyed michael sinclair’s animation, with torrents of water both gushing in and swirling about. Great animation on the guard, too. (Not sure about the clouds, and how they might fit behind the curiously shaped wall.)

A great solution from Deborah Morley, with a paddling pool for the guard’s feet. I like the added ice cream, but the reflection-free vampire family in the foreground scares me.

A pastoral relocation from Ben Mills, with the guard very nicely blended into the scene. Shouldn’t he take his shoes and socks off and dangle them in the water? And that folder’s going to get awfully wet.

A huge flurry of snow from Jota120, swamping the whole scene. Is that a glacier punching through the wall? And who is the half-buried man in the foreground?

A beautiful snow scene from tooquilos, with a great view through the windows (although we should be able to see the horizon from his position). A very well removed shirt! I like the intro sequence to the animated version, with its ice floes. Fun rising mercury and cooling guard; his animation in the blowing snow is fantastic.

A cooling shower from srawland - and both the fan and the shower are very skilfully moving in the animated version. A nicely removed folder, too. Artful work.

Good fun this week.

Yes. It's always a fudge. Reflections aren't the same image turned upside down, they are from a completely different viewpoint - below the plane of reflection, in this case the water. I could have disassembled him and re-assembled him a bit to improve things but in the end it didn't seem to justify so much work.

Surely she’s more Paris than New Orleans?

British ...... 1950's Windmill Theatre. It proved surprisingly hard to find a modern coloured non copyright image of this kind of chorus girl. The one I used I had to colourise.
