Re: Challenge 729: Spooky time
First to use DavidMac’s image was, neatly, DavidMac, with an immaculate cutout and a splendid setting. Love the expression on that pumpkin, and the cat’s head is very neatly inserted. Plenty of woodland creatures in the second entry, although I’m a little confused by the spherical owl. Or is it a crystal ball?

A post-meltdown Chernobyl scene from lwc, with the doll slotting into the scene of desolation. The subtle radioactive glow is terrific. I think I’d have tucked her dress behind the arm of the chair on the left, to make her sit a little further back:

I really enjoyed the second entry, with those remarkably powerful hands - and I like the way the doll’s eyes open and close. Very spooky. And a really gruesome third entry, with the doll reduced to a spattered painting. Glorious.

A graveyard scene from GKB, with all the usual elements - and some very fine mist tying them all together. Personally, I’d have missed out the second doll and rook; less is more, sort of thing. A fine figure of Death, though.

Malevolently sharpened teeth from Ben Mills, in a very stark image. What’s that she’s eating? A mink? There’s a real menace to this scene. Splendid.

A desolate piano scene from tooquilos, with the doll in bridal attire - a very emotive image. Plenty of Halloween goings-on in the animated version, in a nightmarish sequence of scenes. What’s that over the doll’s face in the final image? Is it a hole?

A reconstructed doll from Mariner, with pixie ears and a floral waistcoat. She appears rather to be floating above the pumpkin, rather than sitting astride it; is the shadow too far from the dress, perhaps? And personally, I’d have added just a hint of the side of her head on the right of the frame, to make more sense of the reflection.

A strong sense of deja vu from michael sinclair’s image - didn’t you do something very similar last year, or perhaps the year before? Nicely done, although I think the doll’s head might be a little over-distorted.

A dancing group of fireflies from srawland, in a misty forest setting. Great choice of music in the animated version, and I like the unexpected ending!

Many thanks, David, for the starting image.

Re: Challenge 729: Spooky time
Thanks Steve. The technical problems (cut out, reflections, etc.) proved far less intimidating than I expected. I had real fun with this. Yes the owl is in a crystal ball with all the usual difficulties they pose. There are reflections in the ball especially at the edge where they would be strongest, but I should have made them stronger. The spherical distortion of the owl is not really apparent because it's head is spherical anyway.

Yes, the shadow needs a gradient adding to it. Yes, a view of the back LHS of her head would definitely have improved thngs.

Thanks Steve.

DavidMac's image was great fun to work with...

Your opinion please: In the second entry, would it have been better to make the two faces on each side and below the largest hand a bit stronger? Do they show up enough or perhaps should they have been left out completely?

Interesting question. I must admit I didn't notice the two faces until you pointed them out just now - but having seen them, I really like their subtlety. Make of that what you will!

Thank you, David. I thought I might be being too derivative.

Thanks for your reply... I guess I prefer the subtle approach even if no one notices.

Being creative can be ultimately selfish. You do it for yourself and hope others will appreciate it. Unless you are creating specifically to please others, which is not necessarilly desirable, then your approach is, for me, entirely correct.

Thanks for your comment David... on occasion I use the correct number of knobs.
