Re: Challenge 767: The houseboat
For those of you not familiar with Captain Pugwash, you have missed out on a quite delightful cartoon strip which evolved into a series of children’s books and an animated series on the BBC, first airing in 1957.

The character and his shipmates was created by John Ryan, a cartoonist, animator and writer. Ryan first created Captain Pugwash as a comic strip for ‘The Eagle’ in 1950. Pugwash was a kindly but bumbling pirate who sailed the seas in his ship ‘The Black Pig’ and whose arch nemesis was Cut-Throat Jake.

Tom, the cabin boy, was the most intelligent member of the crew and together with Barnabas, a fairly dim pirate, often saved the day and upsetting an irate Jake in the process.

The cartoons themselves were produced using painted cardboard bodies, arms and legs which were filmed in stop-motion to produce a very distinctive style.

The theme for the series was the ‘Trumpet Hornpipe’ which is immediately recognisable to any British child of the 40s and 50s.

Thanks Gordon.
Immaculate work from you again this week. The medium you are using perfectly fits the cartoon style of the era, and then polishes it!

Re: Challenge 767: The houseboat
Linda there's a 'gentleness' to your image that I find very appealing.

Loyd---that's much better!

Gordon, I loved Captain Pugwash when I was a small child, and I love the music too which I downloaded--well done!

Michael I have nothing to say to you!!!

Re: Challenge 767: The houseboat
Thanks David... I don't have many WC opportunities to use my tropical birds.

Gordon- I've never heard of Captain Pugwash, but that's a very cute video.

Mariner- I've had 'Waltzing Matilda' going around in my head all day... nice work!

Re: Challenge 767: The houseboat
I found my own challenge quite difficult to get started on. I had nothing prepared and no preconceptions. I simply had no idea where to start. I just felt that it's oddity somehow seemed steampunk'ish.

I had thought to give the boat a mermaid figure head. That got me started. Half woman half fish gave me the idea of half boat half fish, but I really had absolutely no idea where I was going to take that. So I just built the basic boat and then started adding bits .... and bits ..... and more bits ....... and then a mermaid ........ and then another ........ all completely haphazard and unplanned ........

Suddenly, like Topsy, it just 'growed'.

It's supremely silly and took far, far too long ........ but was such wonderful fun to do. Worth clicking the picture for the big image.

Awesome! The eye, tail rotor and propulsion unit are excellent touches... I may have to steal it and make a personal animation for my own entertainment.

Thanks everyone; and thanks (I think) to David for the last couple of Challenge images.

Nice work from everyone again.

Re: Challenge 767: A diversion - with apologies to all.
In researching mermaids (I built my own) I came across this. It is called "Sirens" - the first movie from Polish Director Agniezka Smoczynska and is quote "A bold musical thriller about man eating singing mermaids.".

IndieWire’s David Ehrlich described it as “a wonderfully demented new musical that bridges the gap between Hans Christian Andersen and Nine Inch Nails.” He called it “the best goth musical about man-eating mermaids ever made”.

Given the huge competition in this overpopulated genre it must be amazing!

Thank you Mariner. After a very hesitant and slow start, I really enjoyed myself.
