Loyd, I love her attempts to levitate
David, I really like the skull light and the way it illuminates the scene.
Great work everyone.

Definitely prefer this of the two. Simple and effective.

Frank & Vibeke you have both managed to produce 'innocent' images from this. Very nice.

What I really like is not the putting it together, that's easy. The binding it together and giving atmosphere and coherence is the real challenge I love best.

Here's the original composite. It's incredibly simple. There are just 15 image layers.

But to create the atmosphere there are 62 different adjustment and shadow layers, almost all with their own hand painted masks.

I am never sure if this is clever or completely profligate! I always have this little voice in the back of my head telling me that the really clever thing would be to do it far more economically! But it's the way I work and it works for me.

Originally I was going to put this in a regular doll house. But searching for a suitable doll house led me to discover that there are people who create "Haunted" doll houses.

Yes when researching dolls I came across some really seriously weird stuff. There are really bizarre things out there!

Anna I keep looking at your animation, which I love, wondering what it is about it that seems so different from your usual work? Although you have used three dimensional dolls, much of the backdrop is classic 2D. With the exception of the bats, the movement is also all confined to the picture plane (for want of a clearer description). Essentially it is, in spirit, to my eye, almost a classical 2D animation.

Very surprising and beautifully done.

...Well Steve...the good news is that I am keeping to the brief...the bad news...

Anyway, thank you very much Steve for providing this excellent subject, as I had all this dynamite lying around waiting for a suitable occasion where I could deservedly send it to utter obliteration. And how did you know that I (a grown man) liked playing with plastic dolls ?

I presume the part of the brief you are referring too is "Or just ignore my instructions and do whatever you choose."

Michael you rarely fail to confound and surprise .........

Re: Challenge 809: The coffin doll
David your pram challenge was something I enjoyed, so thank you : it took me the course of two days to try and get it right, but here's my point: to get sufficiently motivated to spend this much time on a challenge requires you to like it and if you don't then your're "stuffed".
There are many weeks in a row when I think "Oh no!"; hence, the image below which sums up my sentiment.

That's so understated. It must be a cultural thing.

I purposely didn't create any parallax or depth in this one to try and achieve exactly the effect you are questioning.. so thank you David

Its interesting actually coz most of the videos do have a certain amount of parallax and sometimes I think its a waste of effort and time as it is hardly noticeable but obviously it must be and it does get registered somewhere in the brain. Very interesting.

Well in my particular case 55 years of photographing movie probably gives a somewhat more developed sensibility for such things. But it DOES matter. People sense these things even without realising it. When something isn't right they can 'feel' it even if they can't identify it.

Sometimes for these challenges I need bizarre people. One of my favourite techniques is to use the the search term "cosplay" in Google image or Bing image. "Cosplay" on it's own will net you all sorts of home made super heroes but the wonderful thing is you can prefix it with your particular needs: "scary", "monster", "gory", "cuddly", "skinny", "buxom", "muscly", "sailor", "doctor", "warrior", etc. Each will bring you dozens and dozens of these oddball characters who love to dress up. I really cannot find the right words to describe it!

Once a year there is a three day Manga expo here in Brussel's largest exhibition hall. Ingrid and I often go. Not for the expo - Manga is really not our thing. We go to watch the other visitors!

Many of these youngsters (and occasionally some not so young) come dressed for the part. Some of the costumes are very creative and sometimes beautifully made.

I think we are the only over seventies in the entire hall! But the atmosphere is very relaxed and I am not expected to be dressed in frock coat, top hat and aviator goggles with a home made brass and copper rocket launcher over my shoulder. They are always happy to pose for photos. We love it. It's super kitsch!

The world would be a much duller place were it not for it's eccentrics!

Click for the big image.

Re: Challenge 809: The coffin doll
Hi all, this is my first Friday Challenge in far too many years, I'm very rusty so apologies for my poor attempt, yours are all amazing and I'm loving the animations!

I belonged to this Forum early in the last decade but life kind of took over and photoshop took a back seat. Lockdown has given me the opportunity to dust off the old "How to Cheat..." books and I have to say that I have fallen in love with them all over again

My entry was influenced by my teen son who happened to mention how much the Monster High dolls look like Elon Musk's other half, Grimes. So I have titled it "Baby Musk's New Crib/Plug in Charger".

High Res is here
