Mariner - here are the naked people.

Ancient Rome as suggested by my wife - grapes included.

Those legionnaires had quite a reputation!

That's not dreary at all, David, in fact it's full of interest.

It is to me. I find restoration of this kind more spadework than fun.

I can't wait to see what you will make of this. I have have not portrayed this as it might have been in its day but more what it would be like fully restored. I have a feeling you will re-construct what it might have been like when fresh and new. Now that is a challenge.

That painting of trees looks Japanese. I don't think the Romans ever got as far as Japan.

My cue comes from the brochure I posted. I also notice in the photos online as it is now you can see the vestiges of these trees. I agree it is bizarre. It looks almost Art Nouveau.

You are right, I was wrong.

Re: Challenge 825: Herculaneum
Is it just me or is it very difficult to find a way of scaling this image? The people in the brochure look like giants to me. The openings on the left all appear to be niches not doorways so no real scale there. The pool and fountain have no real size clues and the mosaic on the wall could be any size. There is no reason to suppose it is necessarily life size. Really no reliable unambiguous clues that I can find ..........

So far the entries have populated this with a very different set of choices. So who has giants or pygmies and who is close?

Interested to hear what Steve will have to say.

Re: Challenge 825: Herculaneum
David, I am sure we are all having similar thoughts. The openings on the left are definitely niches (see below). The measurable horizon goes through the middle of the fan-like shape above Neptunes head. I plonked a woman in my picture with the horizon at her eye-level, but she seems to be a giant. I searched for tourists in the Casa Nettuno Anfitrite but couldn't find anything. The LH wall is not true, but it could be lens distortion. The pool is twisted, as is its basin on the LHS. I think the photographer was on some sort of a stand or balcony looking down, using a wide-angle.

Re: Challenge 825: Herculaneum
I think also that Steve has adjusted verticals to be parallel. It makes the image nicer but if, as you suggest, he was tilted down, this would remove the vanishing point in the verticals and distort the original perspective which can sometimes produce anomalies. Friday is going to be very interesting.

Re: Challenge 825: Herculaneum
Well that's one way of avoiding the sizing people conundrum. Clever. I like it.

The lantern is known almost universally to Brits as a Tilley Lamp. Invented and manufactured in England in 1818 by John Tilley. One hundred years later in 1919 the same basic design was manufactured in the USA by William Coleman where it is known almost universally to Americans as a Coleman Lantern.

One for the next Pub Quiz ..............

Double post removed.

I forgot to mention, I love the hint of backlight on the arm.

Thanks David.

Lacking the patience and skills to commit to an attempt at an immaculate re-construction, I had to think of something that was a semblance of an entry.

Everyone's entries were excellent, I struggled which is obvious! I need to start thinking outside the box and stop being so focused on the task set by Steve, is that blasphemy??? Loved Tooquilos pic, very atmospheric!!

Tooquilos

Somehow I prefer the still image this week. It's an excellent restoration.

JimH

Some of us follow Steve's requests closer that others. Sometimes I am very literal minded about it and sometimes I will go off at a tangent. Most of us try to stay within the spirit of Steve's requests but not necessarily to the letter. You've done pretty well there. This is not an easy one.

JimH I forgot to mention that humour and irreverence are key elements here. One thing that binds this group is we all like a good chuckle ........
