Re: Challenge 834: The six nose gang
David - your first image is excellent. But will Mr Sinclair "get" you for not feathering your shop sign? Thanks for posting this challenge. It's a bit flat but I have enjoyed renovating it. Now, what on earth shall I put in the windows? |

Nothing special. I treated this more as practice for refraction, reflection and lighting and realised I know very little about the implementation of such. ![]() _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Mariner That is serious cleanup! But there's something very, very odd going on with the pavement. It appears to be rolling up ............ _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

I suspect that is very close to how it would once have looked. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 834: The six nose gang
First to enter DavidMac’s challenge was DavidMac himself, with a sextet of Pinocchios (seven, counting the one holding the paintbrush). Slightly curious how the paint ignores the contours of the window; but I like the drips. A hugely enjoyable second entry, beautifully done. Should it have been La Bande des Six Nems, perhaps? A good stab at the perspective, which must have taken some manipulation; I’d bring the whole lot down a little, as the vanishing point is still too high. A very threatening third entry, which reminds me of Rashomon and those other moody Japanese films. A London setting from lwc, complete with text and flickering neon sign. I agree with the Euros comment, though! A fine second entry, channelling Michael Sinclair. A cute third entry, with the dwarves locked in the empty shop. What’s that, Bashful? You want to glaze the windows? No, I decided I wouldn’t mention it this week. Oh! There you go, in the fourth entry. Much better! Clever work from Ben Mills, with a splendid red nose sextet. A very fine composition, Ben, and interesting you should put the Vicar of Dibley in there. With what appears to be an upside down cross. Comic characters abound in Ant Snell’s packed entry, which certainly livens the place up. A nicely built left hand window; the one on the right has some curious shelving. I like the new balcony, but it is rather leaning backwards. A troupe of tap-dancing noses from GKB (now there’s a sentence I’ve never written before). Amazing stuff, Gordon. I like how you’ve turned the shop front into a stage, and the scrappily edited shop name is nicely done. Charming. A complete makeover from tooquilos, with the windows stuffed full of mystic paraphernalia. Either it took ages to assemble that lot, or you just photographed your bedroom. I haven’t heard that track from Hair for decades in the animated version. The spinning orrery is wonderful. And is it my imagination, or is the sand running uphill in the timer? Glorious. A murky night view from dwindt, showing a mysterious shop interior. I really like how the scene distorts through the curved windows either side of the door. But I’d bring the interior down quite a lot: we’re seeing too much floor. The mix of inside and reflected outside is compelling. The shop has had a total makeover from Mariner, with good reflections, a new balcony and perfectly restored stonework. Why is the pavement rolling around a cylinder, though? And the shop sign is just too neat: some weathering needed to make it look real. (Please, please tell me the second entry is something you found on the internet, and that you didn’t build it yourself.) A faithful rebuild from JimH, with excellent window shine. I like the flying Spider-Man, but it’s the Minion who really makes it for me. Toilet roll hoarding from michael sinclair - but it seems he’s allowed me the generosity to toss a pack to the chap in the doorway. Cute, but you can’t expect to get away with a drop shadow like that. I’ve never seen so many comics in one place as there are in Vibeke's entry, and it’s very neatly constructed - that reflected shine on the left makes all the difference. I thought at first that the woman with the cart was too small, but looking again perhaps not. Good stuff. ___________________ Fun entries this week. Thanks, David, for the starting image, |

Re: Challenge 834: The six nose gang
I was surprised to hear you say that. I thought I'd gone to quite a lot of trouble to respect contours (see below). Obviously not well enough!
Yes. I think the tables are correct(ish). It's the lanterns that are quite wrong The rear and middle rows should be lower. What is so silly is that they are not part of the main interior image. I added them in myself so I was free to position them anywhere I wanted ......... and got it wrong!
So it should Steve! It's Toshiro Mifune and the other six of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. (And it really is the real other six). For some reason the 'Choose File' button on your site has stopped working. It acknowledges the click but doesn't open the file dialogue. It does this despite both browser and computer restarts. I've had to embed this externally. Let's hope it's a problem that goes away. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
