Re: Challenge 863: A watery fate
David, Loyd, Anna, - hard acts to follow
David - first entry quite impressive
Loyd - fantastic little animations
Anna - looks real to me - nice work
- Michael, nice work on the quickie (blown up - no surprise).
Tried to come up with a different approach; http://vimeo.com/569410680

Michael thank you. I see you have lived up to expectations yourself ...... even if the actual blast is lacking.

Anna I think the 3D looks pretty good. Bit puzzled by the giraffes though. Shouldn't Blofeld be keeping an eye on his shark tank?

Took me completely by surprise with the punchline Frank.

Wow Michael. That's major work. Lot's of minor perspective anomalies scattered about ..... but what a thing to attempt in the first place!

Yes, David, by early Thursday morning I had had enough. I know there are a lot of perspective faults, but to correct all those I would have needed another week, so no way. I did learn quite a bit while doing this, so the huge amount of time I spent on it was not wasted. You have done epic works like this yourself, so you know what it's like.

Re: Challenge 863: A watery fate
First to flood west London this week was DavidMac, with a hugely impressive cascade of water. Completely convincing, and the details in the falling swimmers is excellent. Really tiny point: avoid cloning nearby sky. And of course, I can’t see a surfer as in your second entry without thinking of Dark Star, and the close-up is a refreshing point of view.

I enjoyed lwc's spraying leak, and especially the subtle movement of the swimmers. The moving clouds add a lot of interest, as does the plane. A splendid King Kong in the second entry; I appreciate the distortion through the pool on the left, but we could have done with it on the right too. And a truly startling glass action in the third entry, but not quite as startling as the plane which seems to be gliding sideways. Are we in for a double disaster? The helicopter in the fourth entry is a good idea. It’s at a rather jaunty angle, though; don’t those things tend to stay horizontal? Great balcony in the fifth entry - that was a quick response!

A lot of planting from tooquilos, which certainly livens up the neighbourhood. The shark, though, seems curiously glued to the side of the pool. I like all the movement in the animated version, and the cracking pool works really well.

A post-blow-up scene from michael sinclair, with a lot of cascading water. A lot of cascading water. That’s more than a swimming pool’s worth, Michael! And not sure two big guns are better than one.

A really funny entry from Frank, with bird strike as a viable explanation of the leak. The falling water level in the pool is splendid; would it be possible, I wonder, to have the stream of water narrowing to a trickle rather than fading away?

An astonishing reconstruction from Mariner, reversing the angle of view - and adding a few more storeys to the building. Was this all done without recourse to Photoshop’s 3D tools? I imagine it was - in which case, I’m even more impressed. Of course, there are several issues with perspective, but I’m only going to highlight one: if we’re viewing the building from this top-down diagonal angle, then the reflected buildings should be viewed from the same angle.

Excellent work.

All done by hand Steve. I don't use Photoshop any more and I don't use 3D tools.

Well spotted Steve. I didn't think you would notice. Here is the picture I used:

Much of it due to some wonderful sets of water brushes from Ron Deviney that I have had for years and years now.

..... tiny point: avoid cloning nearby sky.

"Oh Grandma. What big eyes you have!".

Well spotted! I love the clone brush and use it all the time. I have always considered myself bit of a clone whizz and taken enormous care to avoid 'repeats'. I missed it completely this time! Probably because I constantly get so absorbed in one aspect of an image that I lose sight of another and make really silly elementary mistakes.

And of course, I can’t see a surfer as in your second entry without thinking of Dark Star.

I wasn't sure how many would get the reference. It's not exactly mainstream cinema. I have always thought that his scruffy space ship and his portrayal of the sheer boredom of space influenced Ridley Scott in the creation of his ship and crew in Alien.
