Re: Challenge 864: Storming the embassy
One of your best yet Gordon! But sorry I am going to be a bit more critical than usual. The climax quite simply doesn't live up to the build up. The intro is splendid and the shot where the ship arrives over the embassy and you appreciate its scale is just marvellous! But then suddenly it disappoints. This is really unkind of me because an apocalypse takes work! Far more than can be expected in a weekly challenge. But you do rather set yourself up for something that doesn't quite arrive. I still think it's one of your best though. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Well you don't disappoint Michael. I would have mentioned the crater if you hadn't got there first! But why the Germans? _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 864: Storming the embassy
I agree David. I worked to the storyboard and finished what I had started and then the proper ending came to me - but it’s not quite what you might think it ought to be. So your post has encouraged me to do a new ending which I will post some time tomorrow. _________________ Always remember that you are unique - just like everyone else. |

I thought it scuttled itself at Scapa Flow in 1919. Silly me ........ ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Yes, very good Michael: at first glance it doesn't look as if it's been photoshopped ![]() PART ONE DOUBLE UPDATE My third attempt to get the sea to look more natural. The culprit here of course is the "angle" of the battleship: the first attempt would have worked very well had it been side on. ![]() ![]() |

Re: Challenge 864: Storming the embassy
First to attack the embassy this week was lwc, whose status as a fully paid-up ex-colonial has clearly prevented him from assaulting the building. I like the hovering chopper, though, especially its reflection - and the rippling water under the rotors is an excellent touch. And I notice the second entry was published on 5th July - a day late for fireworks, Loyd? I like the comic book style of the third entry, and the zooming effect in the fourth entry is surprisingly convincing - I wouldn’t have thought that approach would work. A full-on blast from tooquilos, complete with medieval castle in the background (a ruined castle? In West London? Do you have any idea how much that land is worth?) A glorious animated version, with multiple attempts at siege. I love how the cannonball bounces off and splashes in the water, the flag distortion with the wrecking ball, and especially the arrows. Brilliant. I see Josephine Harvatt has got the builders in. A well-chosen angle, matching the background well. I’d have moved the man on the right slightly higher in the frame, otherwise spot on. A perfect angle on the fisherman from dwindt, a view that can only be achieved with a 3D model. I like how the fish is so much in the foreground. Best of all, though, is the ingenious truncating of the text. I haven’t seen Hero, but I recognise the genre as depicted in DavidMac's entry. Those are quite some leaps - I suspect Photoshop was used to erase the wires. The massed troops guarding the embassy are good. Has Trump finally lost his hair? A wildly off-topic michael sinclair has taken a battleship, replaced the water (sideways? Really?) and then added some rather bizarre new waves and sky. Well, that was clearly just warming up for what turned out to be a rather good entry: I like the bone-like remnants of the embassy, although not entirely convinced by the pulsating flag. Much better sea in the third (fourth? I’ve lost count) entry. Glad you readdressed it. I was intrigued by the comments on GKB's animation, after it was removed and I could no longer access it. Excellent deep rumbling behind the initial views of the spaceship, and the lighting on it is excellent. My only issue with the model is that it’s too clean (I once read an interview with Ron Howard who explained how he had to dirty up the model used in Apollo 13 in order to look real). Why is the zoom in to the embassy done as a series of stills, though? Google Earth will create an animation for you. The sense of building drama is tremendous, d and the reveal of the scale of the ship is really surprising. And a fine destructive ending - the close-up return to the original image works brilliantly. Outstanding, Gordon. I greatly enjoyed Mariner's trebuchet, and the way the embassy has been replaced with a castle. A splendid array of knights, and that’s a fine collection of ammunition, Do they really have to cut the rope each time? Seems like an awful waste of ropes. I enjoyed the firing clip, and then the ruin in the second entry - the England flag says it all. Glorious, Michael. A fantastic animation from Frank - where on earth did you find a moving trebuchet with an alpha channel? Ingenious replacement of the London skyline as the embassy takes off, and a cracking (or indeed, crackling) soundtrack. Maybe a different choice of font for the Borg message at the end, though. _______________ If you get the chance, do please check out my latest 2 Minute Photoshop video - 10 Photoshop mistakes and how to fix them. |
