Anna, I had to search for "Cubbin". Was this inspired by the work of Paul Cubbin? Nicely done in any event...

Way off, Loyd! Cubbin is a hybrid word I created. Cubby + Bin = Cubbin

I was indeed, "way off". However, when you look at Paul Cubbin's work you can see how I made the connection...

There you go! I've never heard of him but there is certainly a similarity there. Well spotted!

Anna, Frank, Loyd. Glad to see that I am not the only one to take this challenge in bizarre and unexpected directions. Lots of surprises this week

Re: Challenge 879: The binman cometh
Micheal there is an ambiguity to your Alice image that I find very intriguing.

Although you have constructed an impeccable perspective it has a feeling of being made up of flat planes. Obviously with the the brick constructions and the ground this is so. But the background has the feeling of a flat backdrop and the figures feel like flat cutouts with a form of pseudo depth provided by shading.

I have no idea if this was your intention but I find it strangely satisfying. There's a simplicity to it like an illustration from a child's book. I really like this.

Good! That's what I wanted. As you know it was rather difficult to create from the original an image which was anything but crass, and I struggled with this until I remembered Alice, and realized that fantasy was probably the way to go, the same as you did. In keeping with the theme of the Red Queen lecturing Alice it made sense to add a chessboard background. Along with the trees, this and the distant clouds increased the impression of depth.
Both figures were created from John Tenniel's original drawings, with the exception of Alice's face, which I stole from the net. I apologize for the inferior quality of Alice, but I ran out of time.

Can hear the greaser!

"I love you, I love you, I love you I do...AAaaaHHhhaaaa....." he'll eventually get inside when the embarrassment wakes up all the neighbors.

David, I love your gnome pencil holder and wish I had one.

Well, there's a new project for you. Given the standard of the modelling it really wouldn't be too much of a challenge to make a copy in plasticine. Strike a mould from it and make a plaster copy.

David, I am a pensioner. Too busy for that I am afraid.

Re: Challenge 879: The binman cometh
First to visit this week’s street was lwc, with a superficially friendly scene - although the presence of all those flies might suggest these people haven’t been checking up on their elderly neighbours as often as they should. Unless they’re just moths dancing in the light. The hidden clown in the second entry is as scary as clowns often are, and the just-visible skeleton is very nicely done. Fine nuclear waste in the third entry, and I like the subtle head movement of the man in the suit. Good flying bats in the fourth entry, although I’m not so sure about the hovering one - but the spilt bucket is good. That man has a very pixellated shadow!

Gnomes aplenty from DavidMac, and they’re beautifully posed, each one fitting perfectly into the scene. Best of all, though, is the hole revealed by the removal of the manhole cover. Perfectly crafted! The bloodfest that comprises the second entry version, though, is absolutely wonderful. For anyone with a strong distaste for garden gnomes, as I do, this is heaven. More!

A good use of the roofs by michael sinclair, with added rustication and a curiously wide classical front door. To accommodate the pigs, I suppose. Iffy perspective aside, its rather good. But did it ever occur to you, Michael, that rather than having a jet flying overhead you could have animated the scene by having a pig stick its nose out of the door?

A splendid animation from Frank, with the slow movements accompanied by a perfect soundtrack. Really nicely done, Frank, and very atmospheric.

Good lit-up windows from tooquilos, and that hand print speaks volumes. What a good place to store a dragon. Great motion in the animated version, with particularly impressive rain - and I like how the boy fits in the daytime window at the end. Good fun, this one.

A complete rebuild from Mariner, featuring a scene from Alice through the Looking Glass. I like how the Tenniel images have been brought to life, especially removing the crosshatching from the Red Queen. Although the perspective of the pillars works fine, the queen appears to be leaning backwards. Keep that vertical axis vertical!

A fabulous, glorious image from dwindt, telling the entire story of a marriage in a single frame. Dennis, this is absolutely terrific, perfect in every detail: the piled-up pillow and blankets on the bin box, the bottle of beer in his hand, the pulled-aside curtain, the interior view, the lighting on the woman with the rollers in her hair… just fantastic. Edward Hopper would have been proud of it. This image has really made my week. Thank you!

Re: Challenge 879: The binman cometh
Thank you for the very kind words Steve. I been longing to dive into a challenge over the past few weeks but have tackled a bit to much to chew on. Now with going back to work in the office, I'm finding it hard to find extra time. I was off yesterday afternoon and couldn't contain myself any longer..lol...so I dived in. It took me about 4 hours. It did come out better than I expected. Thanks again.

Mariner, now that I have to explain what a greaser is, it sounds quite bad. Lets just say that he is ass creeping to get let in. In Afrikaans, it's called gat kryp which directly translated, is ass creeper. He's kissing up to be favored.

I had such fun with both these. I am glad everyone accepted the second entry in the tongue in cheek spirit I intended. Thanks Steve. Give me a chance and maybe I will dispose of a few more gnomes when the appropriate challenge arrives.
