Re: Challenge 889: Dirty ice
I literally laughed out loud at GKB's entry, with its great pun and excellent attention to detail. The broken window, the glass on the ground, the lighting on the ice cream - brilliant. My only small criticism is that the new name over the door is leaning to the right: the verticals should match the sides of the shop. Lots of extra branding from Frank, with a filled window and an uncomfortable-looking ice cream costume. Very good new signage and decoration. The best addition, for me, is the pair of people behind the counter, who look entirely convincing in that location. A cheeky entry from DavidMac. Ingeniously made, but it’s put me off double-scoop ice creams for life. And I don’t think I’ll ever look at a flake in the same way again. The bottle of strawberry sauce (at least I hope it’s strawberry sauce) is particularly disturbing. Are gnomes becoming your moose, David? A seaside setting from michael sinclair, which, frankly, is more appropriate than Kentish Town Road. I’d have preferred it if you’d used the original shop, of course. Nicely done all the same - except those shadows of the two ice creams are rather unconvincing: sunlight casts crisp shadows, never soft. A fun entry from Ant Snell, putting the dirt back into dirty ice cream. A good expression on the girl, and that’s a remarkably incontinent seagull. The woman clutching her head is, however, much too big compared to the door next to her - and you haven’t left room for her legs. Outstanding work from Josephine Harvatt, with a beautifully flooded shop and a largely submerged iceberg. I really like the density of the water. One small point: when you lower the opacity of the Titanic, you can see the rest of the shop through it. Better to lower the contrast instead. I enjoyed lwc's ageing animation, with its creeping flocking and degradation. Not quite sure why you straightened up the shop first, or if you then didn’t use the straight version as the original. Good texture there. Turning off the lights is no easy task, but tooquilos has managed it perfectly. I don’t quite understand how the door works now, though; why is it lower than the street? That’s a great character in the animated version - where did you find him? Your 3D-modelled dirty ice cream really is truly disgusting! I like the version in the window too. The rats in the last scene are great. Excellent. A beautiful clean-top from Mariner: I particularly like how it stays faithful to the original architecture. A great new setting, with further location suggested by the spire in the reflection. And a subtle new sign on the window! One really small point: the corbel on the left seems rather low contrast, even though it is more in shadow than the one on the right. |

Thanks Steve. I’m pleased to be able to bring some joy into your day🤣 I spent some time researching the sign’s font (Didot) then reconstructing it. I never noticed the slanted verticals😱 Excellent work from everyone with a not-too-easy subject. _________________ ![]() |

You do think the worst Steve! It's the spray can and rag from tagging the shop sign. Gnomes may well become the occasional moose. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
