Re: Challenge 894: Balls to Malta
Incidentally I discovered in my researches that if you look up "Esplora Interactive Science Centre" on Google maps, switch to satellite view, find the glass dome and drop the 'little yellow man' onto it you can walk around the dome inside the lattice work. Useless, but quite fun! ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

All interesting but 'fraid to say I still prefer the first. More depth and dynamism to my eye. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Got the Mac back Monday, and 2 hours later I brought it back to them. In some ways I was happy about it dying again, as I did feel there is something wrong with it, most likely it needs a new hard drive. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Not much time for anything after today and I have come down with the lurgi (happily not Covid) so this and the following will have to do as they are I'm afraid ![]() _________________ Always remember that you are unique - just like everyone else. |

Re: Challenge 894: Balls to Malta
Cutting out the roof top lattices was a pain but eventually I found that using calculations worked-ish. There was still plenty of tidying up of the mask to be done, though. ![]() _________________ If at first you don't succeed then skydiving is not for you. |

Your second image is quite extraordinary Gordon. I think the ball would float lower in the water ..... but who cares? Hope you get better soon. Ant. Another offbeat unexpected slant. Re: Challenge 894: Balls to Malta
As I was feeling better today i thought I would persevere with cutting out the latticework to try to get a better extraction. I refined what I was doing with Apply Image (or Calculations). I found that the blue Channel gave the best separation between the lattices and the sky so I copied that Channel and used 'Apply Image" with 'Multiply' as the blending mode. This immediately gives a pretty good separation but there are issues with the lighter parts of the structure being of a very similar tone to the sky. I used Apply Image for a second time but this time I found that Colour Burn gave an even better separation though I still had the same issues with the lighter tones of the structure. With the main parts of the building that needed to be kept I painted or filled a selection with black. For the sky outside of the lattice structure I filled in white. I now used a levels command to make the remaining blacks as black as black as possible and whites as white as possible. But be careful not to overdo this as you may lose some of the detail. I also painted black using 'Overlay' mode for the brush to restrict the paint to the darker area and turn it completely black. I also used the same technique using white on the sky areas within the lattice. I now had as near as I could get to a totally black and white channel separating the sky from the lattice but with still some areas of the lattice that were white when they should be black. Using a tiny hard-edge brush set to Normal and black I painted in where I thought the missing lattice-work should be. This channel was now used as my Alpha mask and this image is the final result. It all sounds quite complex but it isn't really. The separation would be much easier with a higher resolution image. Give it a go as an exercise in masking complex shapes. ![]() _________________ ![]() |

I am afraid you lost me round about paragraph two Gordon! I am not very technical in my approach. I am deeply impressed! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
